Abstract:
Notes that the relatively good commercial and technological relations between Israel and Europe are complemented by a strained political rapport. However, the EU's position vis-à-vis Israel is not that of all its members. Examines the reactions of some European countries to the killing of nine Turkish activists on board the Gaza flottilla in 2010. Uses the European Observatory on Racism and Xenophobia's definition of antisemitism to determine which traits in Europe's negative stance toward Israel can be characterized as antisemitic. Current day European antisemitism is generally more subtle and occasional than classical antisemitism. Morals have become a tool, used often for European anti-Zionism. Discusses the double standard by which Israeli policies are judged, and views the anti-Israeli stance of most of the European Left and the ruling elite as an indication of Europe's moral degradation. Compares the current situation to that of the 1930s, discusses its consequences for the Jews of Europe, and emphasizes that European antisemitism has grown due to uncontrolled, massive Muslim immigration. Concludes that the dynamics of the situation make it hard to assess in which direction relations will develop.
