Abstract:
Rogosz's novel "Odstępca" ("A Dissenter") was published in installments in the weekly "Przegląd Tygodniowy" (Warsaw) in 1880-82. Examines the reasons why this antisemitic novel was published in a paper edited by Adam Wiślicki, who was not an antisemite and supported integration of the Jews in Polish society. Analyzes, also, the ways in which the Jewish and Polish characters are constructed, the former according to negative antisemitic stereotypes while the latter are presented in a positive light. Attempts to trace modifications made in the text in the wake of the pogrom in Warsaw in 1881.
