Abstract: Screening Auschwitz examines the classic Polish Holocaust film The Last Stage (Ostatni etap), directed by the Auschwitz survivor Wanda Jakubowska (1907-1998). Released in 1948, The Last Stage was a pioneering work and the first narrative film to portray the Nazi German camp. Haltof's fascinating book offers to English-speaking readers a wealth of new materials and sources, mostly from original Polish sources and obtained through extensive archival research. With its powerful dramatization of the camp experience, The Last Stage shaped subsequent Shoah films, establishing several quasi-documentary themes easily discernible in later Holocaust narratives: the dark, "realistic" images of the camp; the passionate moralistic appeal; and the clear divisions between victims and perpetrators. Jakubowska's film introduced the images of camp life that are now archetypal--for example, morning and evening roll calls on the Appelplatz, the arrival of transport trains at Birkenau, the separation of families, and tracking shots over the belongings left by the gassed camp victims. These and other images reinforced the depiction of Nazi German concentration camps and are discernible in a number of subsequent American films, including George Stevens's The Diary of Anne Frank (1959), Alan Pakula's Sophie's Choice (1982), and Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List (1993). Haltof discusses the unusual circumstances that surrounded the production of the film on location at Auschwitz-Birkenau and summarizes critical debates surrounding the film's release. The book offers much of interest to film historians and readers interested in the Holocaust.--

Abstract: "Motivated by Woody Allen's brief comedic transformation into a Hasidic Jew in Annie Hall, cultural historian Shaina Hammerman examines the effects of real and imagined representations of Hasidic Jews in film, television, theater, and photography. Although these depictions could easily be dismissed as slapstick comedies and sexy dramas about forbidden relationships, Hammerman uses this ethnic imagery to ask meaningful questions about how Jewish identity, multiculturalism, belonging, and relevance are constructed on the stage and silver screen"--

Abstract: This hugely important film documents the liberation of Belsen and other concentration camp by Allied forces in Spring 1945. The production was originally shelved by the Ministry of Information in 1945, before being restored and completed by IWM in 2014. This Special Archival Edition has been produced in collaboration with the IWM and contains the museum's restoration, plus substantial extra features and some previously unseen footage that help to contextualise the film, a perfect-bound book, and commentary. The story of this extraordinary documentary was itself the subject of the Emmy-winning film "Night Will Fall" (which was released by the BFI in 2014). [www.bfi.org.uk]

- Sehenswert. Abstract: The influence of Jews in American entertainment from the early days of Hollywood to the present has proved an endlessly fascinating and controversial topic, for Jews and non-Jews alike. From Shtetl to Stardom: Jews and Hollywood takes an exciting and innovative approach to this rich and complex material. Exploring the subject from a scholarly perspective as well as up close and personal, the book combines historical and theoretical analysis by leading academics in the field with inside information from prominent entertainment professionals. Essays range from Vincent Brook's survey of the stubbornly persistent canard of Jewish industry "control" to Lawrence Baron and Joel Rosenberg's panel presentations on the recent brouhaha over Ben Urwand's book alleging collaboration between Hollywood and Hitler. Case studies by Howard Rodman and Joshua Louis Moss examine a key Coen brothers film, A Serious Man (Rodman), and Jill Soloway's groundbreaking television series, Transparent (Moss). Jeffrey Shandler and Shaina Hamermann train their respective lenses on popular satirical comedians of yesteryear (Allan Sherman) and those currently all the rage (Amy Schumer, Lena Dunham, and Sarah Silverman). David Isaacs relates his years of agony and hilarity in the television comedy writers' room, and interviews include in-depth discussions by Ross Melnick with Laemmle Theatres owner Greg Laemmle (relative of Universal Studios founder Carl Laemmle) and by Michael Renov with Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner. In all, From Shtetl to Stardom offers a uniquely multifaceted, multimediated, and up-to-the-minute account of the remarkable role Jews have played in American movie and TV culture

Abstract: Warriors, Witches, Whores: Women in Israeli Cinema' is a feminist study of Israel?s film industry and the changes that have occurred since the 1990s. Working in feminist film theory, the book adopts a cultural studies approach, considering the creation of a female-centered and thematically feminist film culture in light of structural and ideological shifts in Israeli society. Author Rachel S. Harris situates these changes in dialogue with the cinematic history that preceded them and the ongoing social inequalities that perpetuate women?s marginalization within Israeli society

Abstract: English translation by Vernon Mosheim of Alton, Ruth : Deportiert von den Nazis. Seattle, Washington, 1961. ME 9
Abstract: The memoirs begin with the family's deportation from their Berlin apartment on the evening of October 27th, 1941. They were taken to the Lewetzowstrasse synagogue and from there deported to the ghetto of Lodz (Litzmannstadt). Ruth's husband Julius (Ulli) was assigned the position of a transport supervisor, which granted them a small space to themselves. The memoir describes the living conditions, illnesses and deaths in the ghetto. She also recalls religious celebrations and cultural activities. The mass deportation of Jews from Lodz in September 1942 is described. Ruth's son Michael was exampted due to her husband's interventions. Ruth's mother, who was with them in the ghetto, died in 1943. In 1944 the famly was deported to Auschwitz and Stutthof. The living conditions of these camps are described. Ruth was transported to a work camp in Dresden, and was in the city during its destruction in February 1945. After the destruction of the city Ruth was transferred to a series of concentration camps, finally escaping on a death march. She was liberated by American soldiers in May 1945. In 1946 she was reunited with her son Michael, who had survived the Stutthof concentration camp.

[Film-Dienst]

Abstract: Directed by Lodz native Aleksander Ford and financed by the Jewish Labor movement in Poland, "Children Must Laugh" is one of the few surviving documentaries about Jewish life in Poland before WWII. This institutional film was produced to raise funds for the Vladimir Medem Sanitarium which, noted for its modern and spacious facilities, stood as the embodiment of health and enlightenment, in striking contrast to the grim images of urban Polish-Jewish poverty. The sanitarium's theme song, "Mir Kumen On (Here We Come)," punctuates the film with a sense of hope and accomplishment. The Bund's optimistic internationalism, exemplified by the children's endearing performances, permeates the film, creating powerful yet unintended ironies for post-Holocaust audiences.
