Abstract: "Le projet de rédiger l'inventaire des documents consistoriaux concernant l'histoire du judaïsme algérien est né en 1979 sous l'impulsion de Gérard Nahon et soutenu par l'Institut Ben Zvi de l'Université Hébraïque de Jérusalem. Richard Ayoun a accompli la tâche colossale de rechercher, d'étudier ces archives en France, en Israël, aux États-Unis et en Algérie, de les dépouiller, les analyser et les répertorier avec rigueur, patience et détermination. Cet inventaire analytique des archives consistoriales des Juifs d'Algérie, depuis la conquête française en 1830 jusqu'à «la séparation des Églises et de l'État» en 1905, procure un accès direct au plus important ensemble de documents existants sur le sujet, les archives propres aux communautés d'Algérie ayant pratiquement disparu en 1962 dans la tourmente de l'exode. L'ouvrage couvre l'évolution du statut des Juifs d'Algérie ainsi que leur vie professionnelle, sociale, religieuse et culturelle. Le complète une bibliographie d'une extrême richesse étendue à des périodiques locaux aujourd'hui malaisément accessibles, pourvue d'une liste alphabétique des articles par auteurs et par titres. La période noire du judaïsme algérien durant la vague antisémite de la fin du XIXe siècle et l'Affaire Dreyfus, y apparaît sous un jour saisissant: vision au quotidien de la violence, de la haine suinant des articles de L'antisémite algérien (1897-1898), de son avatar le Nouvel Antisémite algérien (1898-1899),... Par delà l'objectif scientifique de l'auteur, demeurent la nécessité, la volonté, l'exigence, de retrouver la mémoire perdue des communautés juives algériennes, de la restituer, de la perpétuer. Ce livre se place dans la lignée des travaux archivistiques majeurs des XIXe et XXe siècles."--

Abstract: Isaiah 49:12 mentions “the land of Sinim.” Gesenius and most nineteenth-century scholars identified this place with China, but virtually all scholars today identify it instead with Aswan (Syene) in southern Egypt. It is argued here, based on the literary context, the wording “the land of [plural gentilic],” and the phonetics of Sinim, that the term means China.

Abstract: Different from the general opinion that Pss 25–34 and 35–41 represent individual cycles of poems, this article argues that the concluding cycle of Book I of the Psalter starts with Ps 32. The cycle Pss 32–41 is determined by the beatitude אַשְׁרֵי, which opens Pss 32 and 41. The cycle as a whole consists of eleven poems and represents a poetic tryptich: with its 42 poetic lines the alphabetic acrostic Ps 37 takes a central position and is framed by panels of five poems on both sides.

Abstract: Explicit descriptions of a descent to the netherworld, well-known from ancient mythologies, are rather rare in the Hebrew Bible. Several times, however, the descent motif occurs in the prophetic oracles against the nations. The present article examines three such passages: Isa 14:12–15; Ezek 28:1–10, and Ezek 31, where the descending protagonist is accused of hubris. The article compares these passages, elaborates several commonalities, and elucidates the use, effect, and function of the mythical descent motif in relation to the idea of hubris. Mentioning a descent to the netherworld in these contexts serves to highlight the contrast between aspiration and outcome, to dramatize the depiction of the protagonist’s fall, and to underline the definitive deprivation of power of political rulers striving for divinity. Thus, in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible, the descent motif has a particular usage within the theological criticism of foreign political powers.

Abstract: Deuteronomy 23:3, says: “No … Moabite may enter the assembly of the Lord”. This verse is motivated by a discriminatory tendency embedded in the ontology of the Deuteronomist. Interestingly, Deuteronomy 23:3 was used by Ezra-Nehemiah to discriminate against the “Moabites” during the Second Temple. Such ontology is countered by the author of Ruth in the narrative of Ruth during the Second Temple. This demonstrates an ontological “war” within the Bible itself. The primary contestation lies in whether God is exclusive or inclusive. This development necessitates a hermeneutics of suspicion. In the course of history, the “theology” of Deuteronomy has been used to grossly violate the human dignity of many God-fearing African people and many other people of the South for colonial purposes. To exacerbate the situation, there were persistent attempts from some quarters to universalise such a discriminatory biblical perspective. This would feed into the centre–periphery arrangement, with the centre feeding the periphery with such hermeneutics. For this reason, African scholars are implored to be very vigilant against ardent pressures put on the biblical texts by ontological, epistemological, and contextual biases of interpretations. Accordingly, Andrew Mbuvi identifies African Biblical Hermeneutics perfectly when he says it seeks to undo “the very construct of the ‘centre-periphery’ binary by allowing the possibility of multiple centres”). Kenneth Ngwa, thus, rightly asserts that African Biblical Hermeneutics considers African epistemologies and conditions “to be invaluable and legitimate contexts and resources in biblical interpretation”), drinking from our own wells). In consequence, this paper intends to set a dialogue between Deuteronomy 23:3 and Ruth 4:18–22. This paper aims to examine the understanding of God behind these verses. This paper will then compare the two theologies with the African philosophical concept of God. Harnessing the African concept of Ubuntu, this paper will de-ideologise the two texts and thus will provide a recommendation concerning the two texts.

Abstract: A newly-recovered bulla from E. Mazar's Ophel excavation can provide an important source of data for interpreting Psalms 61 and 63, and perhaps other psalms that picture God in winged form. This study analyzes the Hezekiah bulla within its iconographical context in order to explore the religious history of ancient Israel as revealed in the Psalter. The analysis of this bulla strengthens the case for a intepreting the voice in Psalms 61 and 63 as that of the king.

Abstract: Genesis depicts a world of tension and collaboration among the groups and families that constitute the stories of the formation of early Israel. The obedience and behaviour of characters within the narrative determine covenantal inclusion or exclusion. The narrative of Sodom-Mamre can be interpreted as a story of surveillance, wherein characters observe each other and act based on their desire for knowledge and control. Though surveillance promises omniscience, knowledge ultimately remains limited. The divine character yearns to witness human experience, while the human characters act as mirrors to this impulse. Lot’s wife highlights the chasm between the desire to see and know and the limits of a gaze. Ultimately, this desire begets violence as the surveillant gaze produces cognitive dissonance and narcissism. This essay references surveillance studies, critical biblical scholarship, psychoanalytic and philosophical traditions concerning desire, particularly the desire of the eyes, the gaze, and ancient imperial surveillance practices.

Abstract: In the narrative of David and Bathsheba (2 Sam 11) Uriah the Hittite is encouraged by the king to go home to his wife yet refuses to do so. For some, Uriah’s refusal is born out of piety and idealism, and he is unsuspecting of what has transpired between the king and his wife, Bathsheba. For others Uriah has caught wind of what has happened and realizes that David has summoned him precisely so that he should visit home, and cover David’s malfeasance. A review of the evidence finds both approaches wanting. This study turns to the clinical literature concerning the challenges of homecoming from the battlefield and the emotional minefield that is combat furlough between two battlefront deployments, offering a deeper understanding of the figure of Uriah the Hittite and resolving many of the questions raised by Uriah’s behavior in the narrative of 2 Sam 11.

Abstract: Commentators have long struggled to make sense of the role that ravens play in the story of Elijah, questioning why these predatory birds with a reputation for cruelty would be recruited to share their food during a time of scarcity. This essay takes up the reception history of biblical ravens, considering how various interpreters have drawn upon observational knowledge of ravens to explain the mysterious role ravens play in the feeding of Elijah in 1 Kings 17 and Noah’s commission of the raven in the wake of the flood in Genesis 8. The essay both recalls and reenacts this interpretive tradition by assembling together pieces of this reception history together with the work of modern ornithologists on the corvus corax to provide some insights for how we might understand the particular significance of ravens in the care and feeding of Elijah.

Abstract: Regarding the creation account in Genesis 2–3, D.M. Carr observes that this text freely repurposes prior cosmological traditions, and so it is a case of a ‘fluid adaptation of its Near Eastern precursors…’ (Carr, [2020], 52–53). Building on his discussion, this article analyzes an ane motif that has not been linked to Genesis 2–3 yet, i.e., the formation of humanity from divine tears or in the wake of divine laments. Known in various configurations from Egyptian, Mesopotamian, and Greek sources, this motif includes tears of a god or gods either as a generative substance in the making of humans or as a driving force for their origins. In light of these traditions, this article considers the pronouncement ‘It is not good for the human to be alone’ (Gen. 2:18), arguing that it is a variation on the ‘divine tears’ myth. As such, this pronouncement addresses a multi-faceted form of ‘aloneness’ in the emerging cosmos.

Abstract: Interpreters unanimously read ἐνευλογηθήσονται in Gen 12:3b LXX as a passive. Good evidence, however, exists to challenge and problematize this conclusion. Recent linguistic studies on the ancient Greek middle voice reveal that aorist and future -θη- forms express a semantically middle domain. When we reexamine the word ἐνευλογέομαι within this light, a better option emerges for seeing its -θη- forms as manifestations of speech actions within this middle domain. In their own unique ways, the LXX as well as Philo, Paul, and Acts further corroborate this alternative. As a result, we may read ἐνευλογηθήσονται in Gen 12:3b LXX as a speech action middle: “to pronounce blessings.” The proposed reading promotes a better understanding of Abraham within Genesis LXX. Rather than a means to an end, Abraham remains at the center of God’s blessing as the earth’s families cry out: “God make me like Abraham!”

Abstract: This interdisciplinary study integrates spatial theory and trauma studies to explore Jeremiah’s Temple Sermon (7:1–8:3) as a literary landscape in the context of cultural trauma. This study reads the Temple Sermon as a traumascape: a literary landscape constructed to shape and contain trauma stemming from Babylon’s subjugation of Judah. This reading proceeds in four parts structured around the metaphor of the phantasmagoria: the first analyses how the Sermon navigates the politics of memory to legitimise its interpretation of Judah’s past; the second explores how the Sermon constructs Judah’s past as a geography of national failure culminating in divine punishment; the third examines the rhetorical techniques which position the reading community to affirm yhwh’s rejection of their past selves. The final part integrates the findings of the prior three to read the Sermon as a traumascape wherein the tension between remembering and repressing trauma is navigated in the act of reading.

Abstract: Job's first response to Yhwh includes a reference to a nonverbal gesture: »I lay my hand on my mouth« ( ידי שׂמתי למו־פי ; Job 40:4b). The parallel line, which speaks of Job's smallness and inability to answer Yhwh, coupled with v. 5, which mentions a cessation of Job's speech, has led most scholars to associate the gesture with simple silence – a refraining from speaking any further in God's presence, perhaps out of fear, perhaps out of defiance, or perhaps in some ancient equivalent to »pleading the Fifth Amendment« of the United States Constitution, which offers protection against self-incrimination. Recourse is frequently made to Job 29:9, which depicts other people responding to Job in a similar way, and occasionally also to Job 31:27, which also mentions the hand and the mouth in close connection. The present essay considers Job's gesture in the light of ancient Near Eastern iconography in order to refute, support, and nuance previous studies. It refutes those analyses that think the only valence at work is God's definitive (and oppressive) silencing of Job, but it supports interpretations that understand the gesture as sign of deference, respect, even self-humiliation. The fact that Job's gesture is related to postures of prayer and supplication goes still further, nuancing prior studies insofar as it suggests that Job's posture may, in the end, be quite pious – a point that has direct bearing on what Job says in 42:2–6 and what Yhwh says in 42:7.

Abstract: Mishnah Kippurim is clearly divided into two parts: chapters one to sevendiscuss the atonement rituals in the shrine, whereas the eighth chapterfocuses on the laws concerning the individual on the Day of Atonement -the obligations of physical affliction, the laws related to life endangermentand to the individual’s means of atonement.In the past, many scholars assumed that the difference between thefirst seven chapters of the tractate and the seventh chapter waschronological-historical: the first seven chapters are earlier mishnayot,from the time of the second Temple and describe the service in theMikdash, whereas the eighth chapter was composed after the destructionof the Temple, when the Tannaim sought alternative ways of atonement.In recent years, however, some scholars have questioned this division andshown that, in fact, chapters one to seven were composed after thedestruction of the temple, and even if earlier historical traditions areintegrated into these chapters, the discussions in the Mishnah and theirediting are the products of the post-destruction Tannaitic beit midrash. Insuch a case, the division between the two sections is conceptual, notchronological: the first section deals with Yom Kippur atonement by meansof sacrifices and the second part of the tractate deals with individualatonement in a situation when there are no sacrifices on Yom Kippur.Examination of Mishnah Kippurim 8, 8, however, raises a seriousdifficulty in that regard: the Mishnah then speaks of Yom Kippuratonement without sacrifices, why are the sin and guilt offeringsintroduced here? The central contention in this article is that the eighthchapter of Mishnah Kippurim introduces a unique concept stating that evenin the temple period, sacrifices did not atone for the individual as much as“the power of the day” itself. According to this concept, only individualacts of atonement will affect personal atonement and the sole task of theDay atonement sacrifices is to atone for the community

Abstract: Scholars agree that the book of Proverbs cannot be related to an actual performance context. Many identify literarily staged performance contexts and, therefore, speech performances in the book. The idea of an actual performance context is dismissed on the ground that no oral-performance setting can be reconstructed for any part of Proverbs. In this article, I suggest that cognitive research into how humans process language fills theoretical lacunae in approaches that limit performance context and speech performance to ancient oral settings. I propose conceptual models of performance context and speech performance that account for interpretations common among scholars that Proverbs was produced to influence readers, in spite of our inability to reconstruct ancient oral performance settings. In sum, I suggest that the communicative (if asynchronous) interaction between producers and readers (ancient to modern) can be seen as the actual (if composite and entirely cognitive) performance context of the book.

Abstract: The epilogue of Job, for no immediately obvious reason, links the restoration of Job’s wealth to his prayer on behalf of his friends. In doing so, it deploys a formulation that features redundancy and multiple philological irregularities. These compositional choices serve several objectives. Particularly on the assumption that Job, in his final speech, maintains an abidingly defiant posture toward God, his prayer constitutes a prerequisite for his restoration. Indeed, in subtle ways, the text emphasizes the prayer’s pivotal role. The text’s odd formulation, for its part, generates inner-biblical parallels that contribute to meaning. One parallel invokes a wider correlation to the Joseph story, implying that Job, in contrast to the victimized Joseph, must extend forbearance to his offenders before regaining wealth and stature. Another parallel helps intimate that Job recovered from his malady, a development that the text, because of an understandable concern, does not wish to state explicitly.

Abstract: In recent years an increasing scepticism has arisen concerning the Deuteronomistic character of the Book of the Four (Hos, Amos, Mic, Zeph). Many themes and motifs have been regarded as “inspired” by or “oriented” towards the Deut and DtrH, but not exclusively Dtr. redaction. Hosea 1*, the beginning of the composition, however, has been neglected in this respect. Unlike 2 Kgs 9–10, which reflects a positive view of Jehu’s fulfilment of Yhwh’s command at Jezreel, Hos 1 condemns him for the bloodguilt at the same place. The discrepancy is often explained through different theological backgrounds. In contrast, this article shows that both thematically (the end of the Jehuites) and in terms of phraseology (“harlotry,” idioms with the noun “blood,” “bow,” symbolic use of the verb “lift up,” nouns belonging to the semantic field of riding), there is a close literary connection between Hos 1* and 2 Kgs 9–10. Thus, for good reasons Hos 1* can be considered Dtr.

Abstract: This paper focuses on the story of two Jewish men who were convicted of theft and executed in Prostějov, Moravia, in the spring of 1684. Although the two were offered a pardon in exchange for converting to Christianity, they resolutely refused. Their story was recorded in a contemporaneous Yiddish song that serves as the basis for the current case-study. The informative layer of the text portrays an event that can be contextualized within the campaign to proselytize Jews in the Bohemian lands at the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Likewise, it indicates the great significance that Jews and Christians alike attributed to public conversions—or the lack thereof. From the formative perspective, the text crowns the two Jews as martyrs who died sanctifying God’s Name, disregarding their undenied legal culpability. Accordingly, this paper traces developments in the Ashkenazic ethos of martyrdom from the Middle Ages to the seventeenth century. It also highlights the shared cultural legacy that bound the larger early modern Ashkenazic communities, such as those in Amsterdam, Hamburg, Frankfurt, or Prague, to smaller Jewish settlements, like those of Moravia. Besides its hagiographical function, this historic song also imparts didactic and moralizing messages. It censures those who are too lenient vis-à-vis their children’s education as well as criticizing the habit of gambling, practices that may lead to criminal activities and push those involved to the margins of Jewish society.

Abstract: The influence of Assyrian ideology on First Isaiah has received extensive treatment over the past few decades. I present another possible datum to explain a rhetorical argument that unfolds in Isa 1:21–28 through the addition of the later supplement in vv. 29–31, namely the shift in Jerusalem from being labeled a »faithful city« to an »unfaithful city«. In light of the political grounding of the passage, the historical backdrop of the intermittent Assyrian practice of changing the toponyms of subjugated cities becomes more transparently important for unlocking the meaning and significance of this passage.

Abstract: Pig avoidance is among the most famous and well studied of the customs described in the Hebrew Bible. Commonly the ban on consuming pork has been considered evidence of the importance of dietary prohibitions in establishing boundaries between Israel and neighboring groups. I argue, however, that differentiation from other ethnicities by means of diet was not the only function that the pig prohibition served in ancient Israel. In fact, the relevant biblical texts are as much, if not more, concerned with employing the pig prohibition as a device by which cultic norms as well as dietary customs within the Israelite community were standardized. With the accounts of the Maccabean rebellion in the second century BCE, the pig assumes a greater significance in identity formation, but even in these traditions, the relationship between pig avoidance and ethnic boundaries is more complex than is often assumed. Detailed analysis of the references to the pig in Lev 11, Deut 14, Isa 56–66, and 1 and 2 Maccabees, along with the study of archaeological evidence and comparative materials from the ancient Near East and ancient Mediterranean more broadly, reveals the multiplicity of factors that shaped the emergence of pig avoidance as a central custom in ancient Judaism.

Abstract: The Third Isaianic discourse revolves around the theme of Jerusalem/Zion. Researchers have dwelt upon the theme from either a historical plane or an eschatological plane, however, its role as a counter-imperial motif has not been explored. In view of the imperil milieu of the prophetic discourse, this paper argues that Jerusalem is presented as a strategic trope to counter the imperial discourse. Jerusalem in the biblical discourse represents a theological as well as a national symbol. It also symbolizes the colonized self of the Yehud community reeling under the Persian empire. At the same time, Jerusalem and the temple display the narrow nationalistic agenda of the Jerusalem establishment. The prophetic discourse of Trito Isaiah carves out an alternative space, a hybrid space that not only breaks the imperial supremacy but also disrupts the nationalistic hegemony of the Jerusalem establishment. The prophetic discourse imagines an alternative world that undercuts imperial definitions of life. In view of the unity of the book, the paper also brings out that the counter-imperial texture of the theme of Jerusalem in Third Isaianic discourse can be located in the complex growth and the final shaping of the book of Isaiah.

Abstract: This article reflects on evil, a theme evoked in the Bible at the same time as the creation of the world. The biblical account of the fall in Gen 2–3 does indeed deal with an ambivalent quest for the knowledge of good and evil but does not yet speak of sin, nor even of original sin, as this has become a commonplace since Augustine. On the other hand, a Hebrew term for “sin”, ḥaṭṭat, appears only in the account of Cain and Abel (Gen 4). This concept means neither a concrete fault, nor an adversary such as the serpent or the devil according to a dualistic conception, nor a human attitude. Sin is rather the perversion of the order of life which should be directed towards connective justice. It denotes interference in the order of creation and the consequence of bad choices that make the cohabitation of humans fail.

Abstract: The article analyses 2 Kings 22:3–11 both synchronically and diachronically. Both analyses refute the existence of a temple library in pre-exilic times. The non-existence of such a library raises the question of the priests’ level of education. The article describes the Jerusalem Temple as a place of worship; priests were primarily responsible for sacrifices. This characterisation allows for further conclusions and considerations regarding religion and theology of the pre-exilic period.

Abstract: The article demonstrates the connection between metaphor and theology and shows how, by tracing the development of the metaphor of the felled tree and its regrowth, it is possible to point to the development of certain theological trends. It argues that Nebuchadnezzar’s dream of the tree in Daniel (3:31–4:34) serves as an »inner-biblical interpretation« for the prophecy regarding the »shoot from the stump of Jesse« (Isaiah 10:33–11:9), identifying three stages in the development of the metaphor of the felled tree.

Abstract: ‘Nehemiah’s Memoir’ is a literary unit in which Nehemiah depicts his experiences and actions in Shushan and later in Yehud. The first division of those memoirs (1:1–7:5) deals primarily with the reconstruction of the ruined wall of Jerusalem. In the middle of this division, however, without any apparent connection to the context, the author inserted the story of Nehemiah's socio-economic reform. In the present article, an attempt is made to explain the story’s location while considering the sequence of stories about the reconstruction of the Jerusalem wall. In addition, an attempt was made to understand the form and content of the people’s complaints that led to the reform and Nehemiah’s response to them.

Abstract: King Zedekiah of Judah’s covenant to release Hebrew slaves during the siege of Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 588/587 and Jeremiah’s idealistic denunciation of the reclaiming of those slaves in Jer 34 has been the subject of interesting scholarly debate. For all the proposed foreign and intra-Biblical parallels, the policy was purely pragmatic and can be understood as a recognizable strategy from ancient texts that recommend procedures during a siege. Therefore when the siege is temporarily lifted, the policy is reversed.

Abstract: In Gen 1 spielt die Vorstellung eine Rolle, dass Gott einigen Geschöpfen Aufgaben im Gesamtkontext der Schöpfung zuweist. In der Septuaginta zu Gen 1 zeigt sich, dass dieses Motiv der „Eigenaktivität des Geschöpflichen“ (Welker) ausgebaut und betont wird. Sodann lässt sich anhand des Markus- und des Thomasevangeliums erkennen, dass insbesondere das Bild von der lebenschaffenden Erde auch in frühchristlicher Theologie nachgewirkt hat.

Abstract: The scenario of Ps 79 refers to the ruin of Jerusalem and provides a case study for examining the capacity of biblical texts to speak of suffering. The anthological style and the intertextual connections with other texts argue for a late dating of the psalm and suggest that it aims to combine different assessments of history and of the relationship between Yhwh and his people. This hypothesis is supported by the fact that the psalm is composed of three units, each with its own perspective. These features shed light on the function of this psalm within the Asaph’s psalms.

BCE, Egypt is mentioned both as political power and a mythological entity. This article focusses on the references to Egypt and points out that the earliest stage of the book refers to Egypt as the place of the first encounter between YHWH and Israel without any notice of the exodus as tradition of deliverance from slavery. As this is crucial for the argument in Hos 12:1-13:8, the conclusion has to be drawn that the earliest book did not have any notion of this specific event. This fits well into the iconographic evidence and latest models for the dating of the exodus story.

Abstract: The Old Testament describes at length experiences of suffering and pain. The question is how these experiences are expressed. A particular stylistic device is the comparison to animals, plants and objects, which are encountered above all in prophetic texts, in the Psalter and in the wisdom literature of the sapiential books. Taking examples from Job 30:24 – 31; Ps 22:13 – 19; 42:1 – 6 and Ps 102:4 – 12, it is shown that and how metaphorical language illustrates areas of human experiences on the threshold of suffering and pain that are barred to conceptual thought.

Abstract: This article explores the question of the punishment of the Assyrian and Babylonian Empires in the book of Isaiah: two empires whom the prophet perceives as God’s emissaries or executioners of His plan. This issue arises in two places in the book: in chapter 10:5-19, ascribed to Isaiah son of Amotz; and in chapter 47, recognized as Second Isaiah’s oracle. These two prophecies present a common idea: God, furious with His sinful people, punishes them through a powerful nation who conquers and destroys the land. However, this enemy is, in turn, also punished. The enemy’s punishment raises a moral problem and the question of divine justice, since it only carried out God’s mission and yet it is being judged by him. This theological perplexity preoccupied the prophets and they presented justification for the action of God. An analysis of the two prophecies and an examination of their structure, reveals that despite the similarities and connections between them, a different reason for punishing the enemy stands out in each. Finally, a theological explanation is offered for this difference, related to the historical background of the prophecies.

Abstract: This article examines the Levitical/priestly understanding of the biology of menstruation. In particular, it examines the Levitical/priestly legists’ typology of vaginal discharging, as well as their understanding of the length of normally occurring menstrual cycles, the anatomy and physiology of vaginal discharging, the homologous relationship between the womb and the primeval world, the biological process that took place during the seven-day span of the menstrual state, and menarche and menopause. It is possible that some or all of what is presented here as the Levitical/priestly understanding of the biology of menstruation was the understanding of the Israelites in general.

Abstract: In superscriptions to the biblical prophetic books, dates are usually expressed in terms of the reigns of kings. In the headings to Amos and Jeremiah, however, the standard regnal chronology is augmented by a “nonregnal date” that does not directly refer to a monarch. Amos’s prophecies are set “two years before the earthquake” (Amos 1:1), while Jeremiah’s career ends with “the exiling of Jerusalem in the fifth month” (Jer 1:3). In this article, I examine both of these nonregnal dates and conclude that they serve similar rhetorical purposes in their respective books. Each reference anticipates central themes of divine judgment that are developed across the rest of the book, while also corroborating an important prediction that reinforces the authority of the titular prophet. The nonregnal dates thus help to show how the social processes of “prophetic validation” continued to operate in the literary production of prophetic books. The uniqueness of these dates among the Latter Prophets may be related to the unusually detailed accounts of prophetic conflict found in Amos and, especially, Jeremiah.

Abstract: Though Leviticus 25's description of the Jubilee sounds unrealistically utopian to many biblical scholars, the Jubilee ideal has stimulated many movements for freedom and economic reform in the last 500 years. It most famously motivated enslaved people to resist and abolitionists to challenge the institution of slavery. Today it continues to inspire reform movements for land redistribution and fair housing, for sovereign debt relief, and for developing environmentally sustainable economies. The contrast between scholarly assessments of the chapter's meaning in its literary and ancient historical contexts and its proven power to inspire movements for freedom that were unimaginable to its writers poses a moral challenge to the conventional methods of biblical scholarship. This article describes the Jubilee's ideological context in four historical settings: in Israel's ancient Middle Eastern political economy, in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century movement to abolish slavery, in contemporary movements for economic reform, and in modern biblical studies to explore how biblical scholars can credibly account for the chapter's historical and contemporary power to inspire mass freedom movements in their descriptions of the meaning of Leviticus 25.

Abstract: Job expresses several distinct desires in the poetic portions of the book of Job. Many interpreters have analyzed how Job uses legal language to express a desire to contend with God in court, and Job 23 is often cited as exemplary of this wish. However, in ch. 23 and elsewhere, Job rejects this imaginary courtroom scene as an impossibility because he experiences God’s presence as debilitating to his constitution as a subject. Job subsequently expresses a different resolve that is rooted in his actual experiences, which he describes in ways that correspond to certain psychoanalytic accounts of anxiety. In ch. 23, Job resolves to speak his way into the divine darkness that envelopes and effaces him, and this reorientation to Job’s experience and desire permits a fresh understanding of what makes Job’s perspective different from and problematic for traditional wisdom, which the three friends articulate and represent. The friends counsel Job to assume a pious posture of fear, which is unavailable to him because of his experience of anxiety. The desire that Job ultimately expresses in ch. 23 finds an intriguing echo in Job’s final words in 42:2–5, and this casts new light on the events narrated in the book’s prose introduction and conclusion, which in turn permits a new perspective on the book of Job as a whole.

Abstract: In the Song of Deborah’s list of groups that went to war, the phrase “from Ephraim, their root in/among Amalek” (Judg 5:14a) has not been adequately explained. To better understand this line and the odd relationship it seems to recall, I investigate the crucial lexeme “root” שרש (*šrš) in biblical and extrabiblical sources. The analysis reveals that a “root” metaphorically refers to a man’s current or future “patrilineage,” that is, his line of male ancestors and offspring. In the Song of Deborah, the “root” of Ephraim therefore refers to one or many of its high-ranking patrilineal lines. Abdon ben Hillel in Judg 12:13–15 supports this conception, as he is, on the one hand, crucially buried at a location defined by both Ephraim and Amalek and, on the other, is portrayed as a prolific progenitor of male sons. In applying this definition of “root” to the internal logic of the Song of Deborah, I conclude that the fighting force from Ephraim was a body of high-ranking lineage-based leadership that mustered Amalekites (and Benjaminites) to war in the Jezreel valley. Alongside Ephraim’s leader(s), Amalek too fought for the allied “people of YHWH” (Judg 5:13).

Abstract: In a new approach, I interpret biblical prophecy in light of its ancient Near Eastern divinatory context and offer a new perspective on the (non)fulfillment of prophecy. I begin with a description of how divine communication was understood according to Mesopotamian and biblical texts, laying a foundation for comparative analysis. I then apply this approach to the prophecies of restoration in Jeremiah 30–33. I argue that the prophecies in these chapters, originally intended to be fulfilled in the postexilic era, were canceled (except 31:35–37, 33:19–26) and that a new decision or decisions were given to take their place. Nevertheless, these canceled prophecies continue to have great divinatory significance that reveals patterns of how the deity intends to bless and dwell among the people. Ultimately, a close reading of the text in the light of its ancient Near Eastern contexts provides a strong corrective to the ways that these chapters are commonly interpreted.

Abstract: This paper is dedicated to a systematic analysis of the argumentative aspect of Abigail’s speech, which is the primary pivot of the speech. The argument is founded on two separate demands of David by Abigail: preventing the spilling of innocent blood, and avoiding self-redemption. These two demands relate to two different facets in David’s plan, exemplify different ideas, and attest to Abigail’s varied motivations. The discussion explores the legitimacy of David’s self-redemption, and its conclusions reveal a new facet in Abigail’s speech, which clarifies her dual function in the narrative.

Abstract: The article deals with medieval Jewish exegesis on Ps. 30. Jewish commentators found it hard to interpret the superscription of the psalm, since the superscription mentions the dedication of a house (presumably, the Temple) and it also mentions David, while the Bible explicitly says that the Temple wasn’t built in David’s time. On top of that, the commentators struggled to find a connection between the superscription and the psalm itself. The commentators tried to solve this problem in several ways, but one can discern that the commentators writing in Judeo-Arabic were beginning to realize that the psalm can be interpreted on its own, without the superscription. Yefet b. ‘Eli and Moses b. Jiqitila underscored the significance of the illness and cure motif in the psalm. Based on this approach, R. Abraham Ibn Ezra claimed that the psalm should first be interpreted on its own, as a psalm discussing a cure from illness, regardless of the superscription, and only later be linked to the superscription. Ibn Ezra’s Commentary has influenced several commentators in Christian Europe. However, none of them seems to have embraced his approach as to the centrality of cure from illness motif in the interpretation of the psalm.

Abstract: This short note argues that the Ezekiel cycle on the frescoes of the Dura-Europos synagogue displays the only known ancient image of circumcision on a Jewish body. The cycle, modelled after the vision of dry bones episode in Ezek 37, depicts a body that is circumcised. Although there is only one body that displays circumcision, it is intelligible in the wider visual context of bodily reconfiguration, as separate limbs and heads form full bodies, and as human genitalia develop from small ambiguous appendages to larger distinct features. The presence of circumcision on a resurrected body is coherent with ancient Jewish literature that conceives of circumcision as present on angelic and perfected bodies, even in resurrection (Gen. Rab. 48:8). This visual depiction of a resurrected circumcised man at Dura affirms circumcision as a part of ancient Jewish notions of bodily perfection.

Abstract: Animal peace as a motif appears in two places in the book of Isaiah, thereby connecting two texts that are each committed to a different concept of rulership. On the one hand, it appears in the context of the promise of a future Jewish king (Isa 11:6–9); on the other, it is embedded in the context of Yahweh’s universal role, which is associated with a new cosmic order (Isa 65:25). This article examines the literary-historical and theological-historical relationship between the texts as well as their conceptions of rulership from a redaction-historical perspective. This leads to the hypothesis that Isa 11 was redactionally aligned with Isa 65 by adding vv. 7–9, a process that is understood to be a clear indication of royal leadership becoming increasingly eschatologized.

Rather than ending with words of hope or encouragement in his third and final speech, this short article argues that Eliphaz ends his speeches with his most serious allegation against Job.

Abstract: In this article, I survey exegetical approaches to the “blind and lame,” using disability studies and close readings to expose ableist bias. I also present my reading, in which I propose that the blind and lame are disabled persons whom David hates not just because of who they are, but also because of the fears they provoke. He is afraid. Disabled bodies can be unpredictable, untamable, and uncertain. David has no idea what his enemies are capable of, because “blind” and “lame” are vague and amorphous labels. Parading blind people and lame people on the ramparts does not display the weakest people in a strong city but displays people of unknown strengths.

Abstract: The identity and function of Baal and the baals in Hos is a much-discussed issue in the Hebrew Bible. The lexeme occurs in three chapters (Hos 2; 11; 13) and is probably alluded to in Hos 9:10. But who is this Baal? Is he the storm god, a cipher for any foreign deity venerated in Israel, or a canaanized YHWH figure? Is the usage of the word in any way homogeneous? After a brief survey of the positions, I will argue that Baal in Hos 2 seems to be the storm god; the lexeme works as a generic term for the foreign gods in Hos 11:2, and in retrospective discourses (13:1; 9:10) it refers to the Baal cult manifested as bull images. However, even the storm god Baal of Hos is very different from his Canaanite counterpart. Baal in Hos 2 is merely a fertility god without any political or warrior functions.

Abstract: The book of Joshua distinguishes in several ways between the Israelite conquest of the »south« – what will later become the kingdom of Judah, and the conquest of the »north« – the area of the future northern kingdom of Israel. The south was conquered »at a single stroke,« accomplished through miracles »for the Lord, the God of Israel, fought for Israel« (Josh 10:42); while in the north »Joshua waged war with all those kings over a long period« (Josh 11:18), and was not aided by any supernatural phenomena. Other differences relate to the character of the enemies in the north and the south and to the type of battle Joshua fought against them. The southerners are Amorites or Hivites, and they are entrenched within fortified cities. The battles against them are focused on cities and their fortifications. The northerners are Canaanites, masters of chariots and horses, and they fight pitched battles in the open field. This paper proposes that the most plausible historical-ideological setting for this south-north divide is the memory of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah during the ninth-eighth centuries bce, when Israel had inhabitants with identifiable Canaanite backgrounds, sustained a substantial chariot force, and participated in pitched battles, while Judah did not. This memory informed the pre-Dtr. literary strata from the end of the eighth century bce, and was later reinforced by the Dtr. editor of the Conquest Narrative, from the seventh century bce or later, adding a value judgement – the conquest of the south was achieved at one stroke, while the conquest of the north lasted many days.
