Antisemitism History
Kurzfassung:
Argues that scholarship on antisemitism from the early 20th century to the present has tended to study the topic as if it had completely broken from its religious anti-Jewish past. Since it first appeared and was named by Wilhem Marr in the 1880s, antisemitism has continued to view itself as a narrowly political movement oriented around social, economic, cultural, racial, and political themes. Shows that the religious dimension of anti-Judaism has remained very present in political antisemitism, whether as open or subdued clericalism, or in numerous other more unconscious forms of "the religious" ("le religieux"). Discusses, inter alia, the views of Lucien Wolf, David Nirenberg, and researchers at the Zentrum für Antisemitismusforschung in Berlin, for which Englund works.
