    Abstract: Der Schweizer Historiker hat ein hehres Ziel: Er will mit seiner Geschichte der Psychoanalyse auch ein Porträt der Deutschen im 20. Jahrhundert liefern. Innerhalb von 6 Längsschnitten ("Deutungszäsuren") konstruiert der Autor einen inhaltlichen, sinnbildlichen Zusammenhang zwischen der Epoche und einem freudschen Schlüsselbegriff: Jedes Kapitel beginnt mit einem Jahr, in dem sich die Beschäftigung mit Freud "symbolisch verdichtet" hätte: 1913 ("Sexualität"), 1930 ("Seele"), 1938 ("Rasse"), 1956 ("Wiedergutmachung"), 1967 ("Kindheit"), 1985 ("Vergangenheit"). Der Versuch, mittels der Freud-Rezeption die "Leit- und Menschenbilder, die ideale und Utopien, die Ängste und Hoffnungen" der Deutschen zu erforschen und zu bestimmen, beeindruckt als grosser Wurf, lässt aber auch viele Fragen offen, besonders die, ob mit dem "Freud-Komplex", jener "Ansammlung von Gefühlen, Bildern und Gedanken über die Psychoanalyse, die durch eine spezifische emotionale Färbung verbunden sind", die jeweilige deutsche Befindlichkeit erfasst werden könne - Ein interessanter Beitrag zur Ideengeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts. (3)
