Abstract:
The opening of inquisitorial file against two Majorcan Chuetas (descendants of Jewish converts) in Mahon during the time of British rule precipitated a series of secret inquiries in that place. These investigations showed that both Chuetas had had contacts with a Jew, a Dutch ambassador who was passing through Menorca on his way to Algiers. The proso-pographical study of that personage, Judah Cohen, highlights the importance that some large-scale Jewish merchants had as interme-diaries in negotiations and treaties between the authorities in Algiers and the different European powers
