Abstract:
In 1942, 166 Italian Jews and 204 Jewish refugees from other countries lived in the province of Modena under conditions of "libero internamento" ("free internment"), meaning that the Jews agreed not to leave the places assigned to them without authoritized permission. During the Nazi occupation, relatively few Jews - 21 Italians and 45 foreigners - were deported. This was due to rescue aid given to them by the local population and the Church. Most of the Jews went into hiding or escaped to Switzerland. Includes a list of names of the Jews who were deported.
