    Abstract: Wenn der berühmteste Physiker des 20. Jahrhunderts leidenschaftlich Geige und Klavier spielt, stellt sich die Grundsatzfrage nach dem Zusammenhang zwischen Kunst und Naturwissenschaften in der modernen Gesellschaft. Albert Einstein pflegte enge Kontakte zur damaligen Musikwelt, korrespondierte mit berühmten Komponisten und musizierte mit renommierten Künstlern. Immer hatte er eine Geige in der Nähe und spielte am liebsten Kammermusik - sei es mit Max Planck, Artur Schnabel oder unbekannten Schiffsreisenden. Obwohl Einstein unter Physikern als Avantgardist galt, konnte er sich mit der musikalischen Avantgarde seiner Zeit nicht anfreunden. Mozart blieb unangefochten sein Lieblingskomponist, eine lebenslange Präferenz, an der weder Arnold Schönberg noch Kurt Weill etwas ändern konnten. Ohnehin sprach Einstein ungern über sein Verhältnis zur Musik und betonte höchstens deren emotionale Qualität: "Zu Schubert habe ich nur zu bemerken: Musizieren, lieben - und Maul halten!" In diesem Buch geht es jedoch nicht allein um den Widerspruch zwischen der radikalen Neugier des Naturforschers und der naiven Haltung des Musikliebhabers. Auch Einsteins Beziehungen zum zeitgenössischen Musikleben und die Rezeption des "Mythos Einstein" in der modernen Oper kommen zur Sprache, der fruchtlose Briefwechsel mit Arnold Schönberg ebenso wie "Einstein on the Beach" von Philip Glass.
