Abstract: An in-depth look at the many ways women around the world helped shape modern photography from the 1920s to the 1950s as they captured images of a radically changing world During the 1920s the New Woman was easy to recognize but hard to define. Hair bobbed and fashionably dressed, this iconic figure of modernity was everywhere, splashed across magazine pages or projected on the silver screen. A global phenomenon, she embodied an ideal of female empowerment based on real women making revolutionary changes in life and art—including photography. This groundbreaking, richly illustrated book looks at those “new women” who embraced the camera as a mode of expression and made a profound impact on the medium from the 1920s to the 1950s. Thematic chapters explore how women emerged as a driving force in modern photography, bringing their own perspective to artistic experimentation, studio portraiture, fashion and advertising work, scenes of urban life, ethnography and photojournalism. Featuring work by 120 photographers, this volume expands the history of photography by critically examining an international array of canonical and less well-known women photographers, from Berenice Abbott, Dorothea Lange and Lola Álvarez Bravo to Germaine Krull, Tsuneko Sasamoto and Homai Vyarawalla. Against the odds, these women produced invaluable visual testimony that reflects both their personal experiences and the extraordinary social and political transformations of the era. (Verlagstext)
Abstract: The New Woman of the 1920s was a powerful expression of modernity, a global phenomenon that embodied an ideal of female empowerment based on real women making revolutionary changes in life and art. Featuring more than 120 photographers from over 20 countries, this groundbreaking exhibition explores the work of the diverse “new” women who embraced photography as a mode of professional and artistic expression from the 1920s through the 1950s. During this tumultuous period shaped by two world wars, women stood at the forefront of experimentation with the camera and produced invaluable visual testimony that reflects both their personal experiences and the extraordinary social and political transformations of the era. The exhibition is the first to take an international approach to the subject, highlighting female photographers’ innovative work in studio portraiture, fashion and advertising, artistic experimentation, street photography, ethnography, and photojournalism. Among the photographers featured are Berenice Abbott, Ilse Bing, Lola Álvarez Bravo, Florestine Perrault Collins, Imogen Cunningham, Madame d’Ora, Florence Henri, Elizaveta Ignatovich, Consuelo Kanaga, Germaine Krull, Dorothea Lange, Dora Maar, Tina Modotti, Niu Weiyu, Tsuneko Sasamoto, Gerda Taro, and Homai Vyarawalla. Inspired by the global phenomenon of the New Woman, the exhibition seeks to reevaluate the history of photography and advance new and more inclusive conversations on the contributions of female photographers.

Abstract: 1942 fotografierten und untersuchten zwei junge Wiener Anthropologinnen 106 jüdische Familien im deutsch besetzen Polen.

Abstract: In 1945, Mina and Jacob met in war-torn Western Poland. Both were Holocaust survivors of, between them, nine camps. These included Plaszow and Auschwitz. Their experiences in these camps are placed against the apparatus of terror and human control that became a deadly marker of the 20th-century’s totalitarian regimes. The book follows their journey as, battered and traumatised, without family, home or possessions, they attempt to rebuild their lives. Readers can share in their struggles to create a family against a background of economic and political hardship in Communist Poland during the Cold War. Mina and Jacob’s story continues as they migrate to freedom in Australia in the early 1960s. There they rebuild the life of their small family. They were people of enormous courage, strength and boundless love, who never gave up. Their daughters, Adele and Freda have extensively researched their parents’ lives and times and have reflected on their legacy and impact on the next generation.

Abstract: How does scale affect our understanding of the Holocaust? In the vastness of its implementation and the sheer amount of death and suffering it produced, the genocide of Europe’s Jews presents special challenges for historians, who have responded with work ranging in scope from the world-historical to the intimate. In particular, recent scholarship has demonstrated a willingness to study the Holocaust at scales as focused as a single neighborhood, family, or perpetrator. This volume brings together an international cast of scholars to reflect on the ongoing microhistorical turn in Holocaust studies, assessing its historiographical pitfalls as well as the distinctive opportunities it affords researchers.

Abstract: Before Pep Guardiola and before Jose Mourinho, there was Bela Guttmann: the first superstar football coach, and the man who paved the way for the celebrated coaches of the modern age.More extraordinarily still, Guttmann was a Holocaust survivor. Having narrowly dodged death by hiding for months in an attic near Budapest as thousands of fellow Jews in the neighbourhood were dragged off to be murdered, Guttmann later escaped from a slave labour camp. He was one of the lucky ones. His father, sister and wider family perished at the hands of the Nazis. But by 1961, as coach of Benfica, he had lifted one of football's greatest prizes: the European Cup - a feat he repeated the following year. Rising from the death pits of Europe to become its champion in just over sixteen years, Guttmann performed the single greatest comeback in football history. This remarkable story spans two visions of twentieth-century Europe: a continent ruptured by barbarism and genocide, yet lit up by exhilarating encounters in magnificent cities, where great players would strive to win football's holy grail. With dark forces rising once again, the story of Bela Guttmann's life asks the question: which vision of Europe will triumph in our times?

Abstract: In this groundbreaking book, leading Arab and Jewish intellectuals examine how and why the Holocaust and the Nakba are interlinked without blurring fundamental differences between them. While these two foundational tragedies are often discussed separately and in abstraction from the constitutive historical global contexts of nationalism and colonialism, The Holocaust and the Nakba explores the historical, political, and cultural intersections between them. The majority of the contributors argue that these intersections are embedded in cultural imaginations, colonial and asymmetrical power relations, realities, and structures. Focusing on them paves the way for a new political, historical, and moral grammar that enables a joint Arab-Jewish dwelling and supports historical reconciliation in Israel/Palestine. This book does not seek to draw a parallel or comparison between the Holocaust and Nakba or to merely inaugurate a "dialogue" between them. Instead, it searches for a new historical and political grammar for relating and narrating their complicated intersections. The book features prominent international contributors, including a foreword by Lebanese novelist Elias Khoury on the centrality of the Holocaust and Nakba in the essential struggle of humanity against racism, and an afterword by literary scholar Jacqueline Rose on the challenges and contributions of the linkage between the Holocaust and Nakba for power to shift and a world of justice and equality to be created between the two peoples. The Holocaust and the Nakba is the first extended and collective scholarly treatment in English of these two constitutive traumas together.

Abstract: This book focuses on the fate of Polish Jews and Polish-Jewish relations during the Holocaust and its aftermath, in the ill-recognized era of Eastern-European pogroms after the WW2. It is based on the author’s own ethnographic research in those areas of Poland where the Holocaust machinery operated. The results comprise the anthropological interviews with the members of the generation of Holocaust witnesses and the results of her own extensive archive research in the Polish Institute for National Remembrance (IPN).

Keywords: Exhibition Code Name Żegota. The Hidden Aid (2017 - 2018 : Kraków) ; Widerstand ; Ausstellung ; Schoa ; Krakau
Abstract: The exhibition Code Name Żegota – the Hidden Aid is devoted to one of the most tragic events in the 20th century history – the Holocaust, precisely planned and performed by the Germans, taking advantage of police and military formations, as well as an extensive clerical system and industrial potential of the Third Reich. The crime of an unprecedented scope was committed within the areas of Central-Eastern European countries occupied by Germany, in which within the area of the pre-war Republic of Poland. It is uncertain when and in what circumstances the decision on murdering the majority of the European Jews was taken, since no document on that matter has been preserved. The mass extermination of the Jewish population inhabiting towns and cities of the eastern area of the Second Republic and the Soviet Union was commenced in summer and autumn 1941 by the pacification divisions, so called Einsatzgruppen which consisted of individual Einsatzkommandos, following the Wehrmacht units. The exhibition raises the topic of the support provided to the Jews by the Poles, still relevant and arousing many emotions, both the support provided in an organised manner, as well as individual one. The title refers to the code name used by the “Żegota” secret Council to Aid Jews. Its responsibility was to save possibly the greatest number of Jews, both hiding ones and imprisoned in various camps, doomed to slow death as a result of malnutrition, the ambient conditions, and often as a result of physically strenuous labour for German industry. The underground Council to Aid Jews was founded in Warsaw in late 1942 as a unit at the Government Delegation for Poland, in place of Konrad Żegota Provisional Committee to Aid Jews, active from September. In spring 1943 the subsidiaries of the Council to Aid Jews were established in Krakow and Lvov. The exhibition currently presented in the MHK branch of Oskar Schindler’s Factory unfolds the story lines present in permanent exhibition Kraków under Nazi Occupation 1939–1945. It is not limited to present the organisational structures of “Żegota”, operation methods and cases of aid, but it also presents a wider context of rescuing Jews. The purpose of the exhibition is to familiarise the visitors with various attitudes of the Polish society towards the Holocaust, mostly all the dilemmas faced by those who sought shelter and those who decided to provide support risking their own lives. It also attempts to answer a question crucial from the present day point of view: what were the conditions of providing the aid? Who provided it? What was the attitude of the society to the rescuers and the rescued? What did the everyday life in the shadows look like? The exhibition draws the attention of the visitor to certain cases, stories of individuals through which it presents the complex reality of the German occupation period. The exhibition is based mainly on the coverage of the survivors and witnesses, as well as on the preserved documents.

Abstract: Alongside his extensive pioneering work as a prominent video artist in Germany, Marcel Odenbach’s (b. 1953, Cologne) oeuvre extends to drawing and collage. The exhibition presents a selection of collages focusing on the motif of windows shown from the inside. From a distance, Odenbach’s window images—specific and photograph-based—seem to offer a whole, spectacular image. However, on closer inspection two visual plains are discerned, simultaneously different yet reflecting and constructing one another.

Abstract: For many years, histories of the Holocaust focused on its perpetrators, and only recently have more scholars begun to consider in detail the experiences of victims and survivors, as well as the documents they left behind. This volume contains new research from internationally established scholars. It provides an introduction to and overview of Jewish narratives of the Holocaust. The essays include new considerations of sources ranging from diaries and oral testimony to the hidden Oyneg Shabbes archive of the Warsaw Ghetto; arguments regarding Jewish narratives and how they fit into the larger fields of Holocaust and Genocide studies; and new assessments of Jewish responses to mass murder ranging from ghetto leadership to resistance and memory.

Abstract: In the face of an outpouring of research on Holocaust history, Holocaust Angst takes an innovative approach. It explores how Germans perceived and reacted to how Americans publicly commemorated the Holocaust. It argues that a network of mostly conservative West German officials and their associates in private organizations and foundations, with Chancellor Kohl located at its center, perceived themselves as the "victims" of the afterlife of the Holocaust in America. They were concerned that public manifestations of Holocaust memory, such as museums, monuments, and movies, could severely damage the Federal Republic's reputation and even cause Americans to question the Federal Republic's status as an ally. From their perspective, American Holocaust memorial culture constituted a stumbling block for (West) German-American relations since the late 1970s. Providing the first comprehensive, archival study of German efforts to cope with the Nazi past vis-a-vis the United States up to the 1990s, this book uncovers the fears of German officials-some of whom were former Nazis or World War II veterans-about the impact of Holocaust memory on the reputation of the Federal Republic and reveals their at times negative perceptions of American Jews. Focusing on a variety of fields of interaction, ranging from the diplomatic to the scholarly and public spheres, the book unearths the complicated and often contradictory process of managing the legacies of genocide on an international stage. West German decision makers realized that American Holocaust memory was not an "anti-German plot" by American Jews and acknowledged that they could not significantly change American Holocaust discourse. In the end, German confrontation with American Holocaust memory contributed to a more open engagement on the part of the West German government with this memory and eventually rendered it a "positive resource" for German self-representation abroad. Holocaust Angst offers new perspectives on postwar Germany's place in the world system as well as the Holocaust culture in the United States and the role of transnational organizations.

Abstract: Massenerschießungen.

Abstract: This book describes the vibrant activity of survivors who founded Jewish historical commissions and documentation centers in Europe immediately after the Second World War. In the first postwar decade, these initiatives collected thousands of Nazi documents along with testimonies, memoirs, diaries, songs, poems, and artifacts of Jewish victims. They pioneered in developing a Holocaust historiography that placed the experiences of Jews at the center and used both victim and perpetrator sources to describe the social, economic, and cultural aspects of the everyday life and death of European Jews under the Nazi regime. This book is the first in-depth monograph on these survivor historians and the organizations they created. A comparative analysis, it focuses on France, Poland, Germany, Austria, and Italy, analyzing the motivations and rationales that guided survivors in chronicling the destruction they had witnessed, while also discussing their research techniques, archival collections, and historical publications. It reflects growing attention to survivor testimony and to the active roles of survivors in rebuilding their postwar lives. It also discusses the role of documenting, testifying, and history writing in processes of memory formation, rehabilitation, and coping with trauma. Jockusch finds that despite differences in background and wartime experiences between the predominantly amateur historians who created the commissions, the activists found documenting the Holocaust to be a moral imperative after the war, the obligation of the dead to the living, and a means for the survivors to understand and process their recent trauma and loss. Furthermore, historical documentation was vital in the pursuit of postwar justice and was deemed essential in counteracting efforts on the part of the Nazis to erase their wartime crimes. The survivors who created the historical commissions were the first people to study the development of Nazi policy towards the Jews and also to document Jewish responses to persecution, a topic that was largely ignored by later generations of Holocaust scholars. Abstract: Institutions that have collected video testimonies from the few remaining Holocaust survivors are grappling with how to continue their mission to educate and commemorate. Noah Shenker calls attention to the ways that audiovisual testimonies of the Holocaust have been mediated by the institutional histories and practices of their respective archives. Shenker argues that testimonies are shaped not only by the encounter between interviewer and interviewee, but also by technical practices and the testimony process. He analyzes the ways in which interview questions, the framing of the camera, and curatorial and programming preferences impact how Holocaust testimony is molded, distributed, and received.

Abstract: From 1941 to 1944, the Polish Jewish photographer Henryk Ross (1910-1991) was a member of an official team documenting the implementation of Nazi policies in the Lodz Ghetto in Poland. Covertly, he captured on film scores of both quotidian and intimate moments of Jewish life. In 1944, he buried thousands of negatives in an attempt to save this secret record. After the war, Ross returned to Poland to retrieve them. Although some were destroyed by nature and time, many negatives survived. This book presents a selection of the nearly 3,000 surviving images - along with original prints and other archival material including curfew notices and newspapers - from the permanent collection at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Ross' images offer a startling and moving new representation of one of humanity's greatest tragedies. Striking for both their historical content and artistic quality, the raw intimacy and emotional power of his photographs remain undiminished.0Exhibition: Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, USA (31.1.2015-14.6.2015)

Abstract: After the Nazi Party came to power in Germany, anti-Semitism became the state policy of Nazi Germany. Later this policy was transferred to all the areas of Europe occupied by the Third Reich. The persecution and killings of Jews were initiated by Nazi Germany, but in certain occupied countries, including Lithuania, the Nazis managed to involve some part of the local population and local collaborating institutions into their criminal actions. The Nazi propaganda succeeded in exploiting the anti-Communist and anti-Semitic moods that had developed during the year of Soviet occupation (in 1940–1941). The Nazis convinced some Lithuanians that Bolshe-vism meant the‚ Jewish power‘ and the Jews were primarily responsible for the state-carried out terror during the Soviet annexation and occupation.

Abstract: Almost all museums hold photographs in their collections, and museum professionals and their audiences engage with photographs in a myriad of ways. Yet despite some three decades of critical museology and photographic theory, and an extensive debate on the politics of representation, outside art museums, almost no critical attention has been given specifically to the roles, purposes and lives of these photographs within museums. This book brings into focus the ubiquitous yet entirely unconsidered work that photographs are put to in museums. The authors' argument is that there is an economy of photographs in museums which is integral to the processes of the museum, and integral to the understanding of museums. The international contributors, drawn from curators and academics, reflect a range of visual and museological expertise. After an introduction setting out the range of questions and problems, the first part addresses broad curatorial strategies and ways of thinking about photographs in museums. Shifting the emphasis from curatorial practices and anxieties to the space of the gallery, this is followed by a series of case studies of exhibitionary practices and the museum strategies that support them. The third section focuses on the role of photographs in the museum articulation of ’difficult histories’. A final section addresses photograph collections in a digital environment. New technologies and new media have transformed the management, address and purposing in photographs in museums, from cataloguing practices to streaming on social media. These growing practices challenge both traditional hierarchies of knowledge in museums and the location of authority about photographs. The volume emerges from PhotoCLEC, a HERA funded project on museums and the photographic legacy of the colonial past in a postcolonial and multicultural Europe.

Abstract: ״If you are lonely when you are alone, you are in bad company״ Jean Paul Sartre Loneliness is a major contemporary phenomenon, gaining more and more impact on people’s lives. The exacting urban environment, in the face of social and technological changes, never leaves the individual in peace – it forever urges him, stimulates his nerves and attacks his senses in an endless sequence of fleeting perceptions and random impressions. Many amongst us seek simulations of life that seem more exciting than life itself. We fear a reality which is not mediated by computers. Thousands of text messages sent daily by people all over the world, who spend endless hours in social networks, have created a new reality of social alienation, unparalleled in its dimensions compared to past generations. Thus we become victims of the illusion of virtual friendships on the web, where we collect thousands of friends whom we imagine to be human relationships that only lead us to further loneliness. The more technology advances, the more our mental lives retreat. Loneliness and solitude are seemingly similar but are in fact very different scenarios, in which the individual is alone. Loneliness is a state of segregation of the individual, while solitude is a voluntary state in which the individual is independent and can appreciate the space surrounding him, and where perhaps, he might find the best possible company. In his book "Between Man and Man" Martin Buber writes: “We have seen how in the history of the human spirit man again and again becomes solitary… that is, he seeks a divine form of being with which, solitary as he is, he can communicate ;he stretches his hands out beyond the world to meet this form. But we have also seen that there is a way leading from one edge of solitude to the next, that is, that each solitude is colder and stricter than the preceding, and salvation from it more difficult. But finally man reached a condition where he can no longer stretch his hands out from his solitude to meet a divine form. That is at the basis of Nietzsche’s saying, ‘God is dead’. Apparently, nothing more remains now to the solitary man but to seek an intimate communication with himself.” Raphie Etgar, Curator

Jahrhunderts.

Abstract: The Ashen Rainbow plays on the paradox of the Holocaust: that the darkest hour of human depravity influenced an unprecedented array of human creativity--a rainbow tinged with ash. The juxtaposition of the terms "arts" and "Holocaust" seems illogical: one pertaining to creation and the other destruction. Yet Soltes' insightful interpretations embrace this disconnect, as he interweaves multiple disciplines ranging from literature, music, and theater, to visual art and film. The Ashen Rainbow focuses on the diversity of Holocaust art, claiming that the most successful pieces recognize "the essential inaccessible ineffability of such an event." Each of Professor Soltes' essays stand on its own. However, together they offer a comprehensive, multifaceted examination of an event that captures humanity in its brightest and darkest moments.

Abstract: Nach ihrer mehrfach ausgezeichneten Monografie 5683 miles away (Kehrer 2010) richtet Yael Ben-Zion in Intermarried erneut ihre Kamera auf ein persönliches, gleichwohl politisch aufgeladenes Thema.

Abstract: The early practitioners of photography in the late 19th century and first decades of the 20th century shaped the evolving language of the medium by expanding the limits of the photographic vision. Many of these pioneers were immigrants - people displaced by choice or, quite often, by necessity. These photographers became observers and interpreters of their new surroundings through the filters of their different cultures, languages and religions. Photography in the 20th century (particularly the Modernist vision) is deeply indebted to them. Displaced Visions reconsiders the work and influence of key figures in modernist photography from the point of view of their status as immigrants, considering how this condition affected their vision and creativity and enhanced the development of the photographic language in general. It features the work of nearly 100 photographers, including André Kertész, Brassai, Bill Brandt, Man Ray, Robert Frank, the New York School photographers, the Photo League Photographers, Lisette Model, Moholy-Nagy, Erich Salomon, Weegee, William Klein, Tina Modotti, Inge Morath and many more. It accompanies a major touring exhibition opening at The Israel Museum, Jerusalem in spring 2013.

Abstract: Holocaust artworks intuitively must fulfil at least two criteria: artistic (lest they be merely historical documents) and historical (lest they distort the Holocaust or become merely artworks). The Sense of Semblance locates this problematic within philosophical aesthetics, as a version of the conflict between aesthetic autonomy and heteronomy, and argues that Adorno's dialectic of aesthetic semblance describes the normative demand that artworks maintain a dynamic tension between the two. The Sense of Semblance aims to move beyond familiar debates surrounding postmodernism by demonstrating the usefulness of contemporary theories of meaning and understanding, including those from the analytic tradition. Pickford shows how the causal theory of names, the philosophy of tacit knowledge, the analytic philosophy of quotation, Sartre's theory of the imaginary, the epistemology of testimony, and Walter Benjamin's dialectical image can help explicate how individual artworks fulfil artistic and historical desiderata. In close readings of Celan's poetry, Holocaust memorials in Berlin, the quotational artist Heimrad Bäcker, Claude Lanzmann's film Shoah, and Art Spiegelman's graphic novel Maus, Pickford offers interpretations that, in their precision, specificity, and clarity, inaugurate a dialogue between contemporary analytic philosophy and contemporary art. The Sense of Semblance is the first book to incorporate contemporary analytic philosophy in interpretations of art and architecture, literature, and film about the Holocaust.

Abstract: Miriam Katin's debut graphic novel, the 2006 memoir We Are On Our Own, was a unique portrait of how one family survived the Second World War. A companion to We Are On Our Own, Letting It Go shows Miriam, now an adult, dealing with her son Ilan's recent move to Berlin. As Miriam struggles to accept his decision, she realizes that her hesitations have more to do with longheld grudges than any sort of legitimate concerns. Whereas We Are On Our Own probed Miriam's loss of faith and talked about her experiences during the War, Letting It Go examines the lasting trauma of surviving World War II from a very different vantage point, focusing on Miriam's life as a middle-aged New Yorker. The flowing, expressive style employed in We Are On Our Own has been refined in this fullcolor masterpiece. A panel-less style lets the story flow, with wise and funny anecdotes along the way. Katin has the light hand of a master storyteller in this, an insightful, serious, but wry account of the myriad ways trauma inflects daily existence, both for survivors and for their families.

Abstract: This fascinating book tells the story of a group of young Jewish people who had lives filled with intellectual exploration, intense friendships and romances, and dangerous and illegal political action, during one of the most anti-Semitic and regressive regimes in history. The roots of Jewish antifascism in the Communist, Socialist, and Jewish youth movements of pre-Nazi working class Berlin are examined in this book. The complete story of Herbert Baum and Jewish antifascism is told through oral and written testimony of survivors, friends, and relatives of group members; Nazi trial documents; and primary documents of the period. Everything fell apart in May of 1942, however, when Baum and a few others went into the massive anti-Soviet and anti-Semitic Nazi propaganda exhibition Das Sowjet-Paradies (Soviet Paradise) and set off several small explosive devices. Unfortunately, a comrade of Baum's was interrogated by the Gestapo and under duress gave them a list of names of many people associated with Herbert Baum. Little by little, people were arrested, put on trial and executed or sent to death camps. This book is a testament to Jewish antifascist resistance in Nazi Germany.

Abstract: In July 1941, Bernard Burton and his parents escaped Nazi Berlin on one of the last "Jewish wagons going west. The family traveled to Spain and then to Cuba, using visas that no official noticed had expired months before, and remained in Cuba for three years before joining relatives in the United States. There, young Bernard would go on to serve in the U.S. Army, attend college, marry, have a successful career and raise a family. Through the years, Bernard corresponded with journalists, academics and others about topics relating to the Holocaust and to his life as a Jewish child and teen in Nazi Berlin. With an adult's hindsight formed by decades of reflection, he has assembled these letters and crafted narrative around them, and has shared descriptions of related events from later in life. The result is a vivid look at a world witnessed by a Jewish child under Hitler, a European refugee in Cuba, an American soldier occupying his native German soil, and ultimately an adult, a grandfather and a survivor.

Abstract: This volume offers an overview of the career of the Ukrainian photographer Boris Mikhailov. The work of Mikhailov is seen through the eyes of filmmaker David Teboul who completed a documentary about the artist in 2010 – Boris Mikhailov: I’ve Been Here Once Before. Mikhailov is one of the most important artists to have emerged from the former Soviet Union, and for more than 30 years has taken photographs that engage with the idea of the individual living within the historical and political system, the breakup of the Soviet Union and its many human casualties. Extensively illustrated with stills from Teboul’s film including Mikhailov with his work, the book also includes transcripts of Mikhailov’s conversations with Teboul; here he provides insight into both his own work and, more generally, the life of an artist in the Soviet Union before and after its fall. This volume brings into focus Mikhailov’s beautifully crafted and often melancholy body of work, which was relatively unknown prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Abstract: Artist Avi Ganor has been involved in photography since 1975. A Science Studies graduate at the Technion, he studied Business Management at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem; Photography at the San Francisco Art Institute and the Pratt Institute, New York; and Digital Media Studies at the Interdisciplinary Center, Herzliya. He has taught at the Departments of Photography and of Visual Communication at Bezalel, Jerusalem, and held solo exhibitions at the Tel Aviv Museum in 1985 and The Israel Museum in 1990. Alongside his photographic work, Ganor researches theoretical aspects of the medium. His works deal with the necessity of using forced metaphors, and the fluid moderation of the relationships between actuality and physical existence, between trauma and reality. The exhibition presents some 30 works from the series "RealityTrauma" (2003-2010), in direct "close to home" documentary diary style, through an allegorical poetic observation of both concepts and their conversion into a third, unified concept into which they collapse. In their reductive manner, the works offer a way to deal with horror as the concept of trauma escapes an appropriate interpretation, whether literal or visual. Beyond description, they seek to represent the indefinable, conducting a complex, tortuous discourse with the medium and with the way various genres deal with representation.

Abstract: The photographs of Gaston Zvi Ickowicz (b. Buenos Aires, 1974) excel in attentive observation of "place" and conduct a unique dialogue with modern and contemporary photography. His precise, introverted gaze captures signs and remnants of occurrences, often facing down, to the ground. His focusing on the layered surface exposes an esthetic, political and emotional complexity and crystallizes into a typological poetic definition of the place.

Abstract: In her book, Iby tells of her early childhood in Czechoslovakia and of how her parents - alarmed at the persecution of Jews in Germany - smuggled her over the border to Hungary. The Woman Without A Number also reveals how she was caught by the security police and then imprisoned and tortured, not only as a result of her Jewish connections but for having entered Hungary illegally and for aiding the resistance movement. Eventually, Iby was sent to the infamous Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. In June 1944, Iby Knill left Auschwitz-Birkenau by volunteering to travel as a nurse with a slave labour transport of 500 women. Once transported to Lippstadt, she was put in charge of a hospital unit and risked her life protecting the weak and helpless from the gas chambers.

Abstract: Artists in the Photo League, active from 1936 to 1951, were known for capturing sharply revealing, compelling moments from everyday life. Their focus entered on New York City and its vibrant streets a newsboy at work, a brass band on a bustling corner, a crowded beach at Coney Island. Though beautiful, the images harbor strong social commentary on issues of class, child labor, and opportunity. The Radical Camera explores the fascinating blend of aesthetics and social activism at the heart of the Photo League, tracing the group's left-leaning roots and idealism to the worker-photography movement in Europe. Influenced by mentors Lewis Hine, Berenice Abbott, and Paul Strand, artists in the Photo League worked within a unique complex comprising a school, a darkroom, a gallery, and a salon, in which photography was discussed as both a means for social change and an art form. The influence of 'the Photo League' artists on modern photography was enormous, ushering in the New York School. Presenting 150 works of the members of 'the Photo League' alongside complementary essays that offer new interpretations of the League's work, ideas, and pedagogy, this beautifully illustrated book features artists including Margaret Bourke-White, Sid Grossman, Morris Engel, Lisette Model, Ruth Orkin, Walter Rosenblum, Aaron Siskind, W. Eugene Smith, and Weegee, among many others.

Abstract: About 5,000 children were imprisoned in the Kaunas Ghetto from 1941-1944, of whom some 250-300 were smuggled out of the ghetto, hidden by Gentiles and survived. This book is a collective memory of events that happened to Kaunas Jewry during the Nazi occupation of Lithuania. It contains 50 stories of people who suffered through the Holocaust in their childhood in Kaunas. Most of the contributors are writing about their ordeal for the first time, after more then 60 years of silence. The stories cover the background of the families before the war, life in the Ghetto, and the main tragic events that happened in Kaunas during three years of fascist regime in Lithuania. The memoirs describe how children were smuggled out of the Ghetto and their experiences and feelings living with the gentiles who sheltered them.
