Abstract: This volume of The New Cambridge Medieval History covers most of the period of Frankish and Carolingian dominance in western Europe. It was one of remarkable political and cultural coherence, combined with crucial, very diverse and formative developments in every sphere of life. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the authors consider developments in Europe as a whole, from Ireland to the Bosphorus and Iceland to Gibraltar. The chapters offer an examination of the interaction between rulers and ruled, of how power and authority actually worked, and of the impact of these on the society and culture of Europe as a whole. The volume is divided into four parts. Ich habe diesen Namen nie gehört. Und werde vermutlich auch nichts mehr über ihn hören. Vielleicht werde ich nie erfahren, wer er ist, woher und weshalb er gekommen ist und wie sein Schicksal verlaufen wird."[1] So räsoniert das Alter Ego György Somlyós in seinem Roman "Die Rampe". Der Mann, der während der vorausgegangenen 245 Seiten sporadisch auftauchte, skizzenhaft-unscharf blieb, gar ein wenig unheimlich und rätselhaft, erhält nun--endlich--einen Namen: Wallenberg. Und entgegen der Annahme des Romanhelden wird dieser Name der Nachwelt im Gedächtnis bleiben. Das Eingreifen dieses "Mannes mit Edenhut" an jenem grauen Novembertag 1944 bedeutet--nicht nur für den Autor--Weiterleben statt Abtransport nach Auschwitz. Als György Somlyós "Die Rampe" 1984 in Ungarn erschien, war Wallenberg gerade dem Vergessen entrissen--20 Jahre später ist die Popularität des ,Righteous Gentile' ungebrochen. Sein Name ist zum Synonym geworden für die vereinten Schutzmaßnahmen der neutralen Botschaften während des Zweiten Weltkrieges im besetzten Budapest, die zur Rettung der verbleibenden 120 000 Juden maßgeblich beitrugen. Weltweit genießt Wallenberg Ansehen, sein Handeln dient zur Vermittlung von Menschenrechten und Zivilcourage. Doch wer war dieser Mann, woher kam er? Was veranlasste ihn, den ausgebildeten Architekten und Geschäftsmann, 31-jährig sein sicheres schwedisches Heimatland zu verlassen? Sich im Auftrag der Regierung und des amerikanischen War Refugee Boards nach Budapest entsenden zu lassen in dem Wissen, dass der zuerkannte Diplomatenstatus ihm nur bedingt Schutz bieten würde? Dem geht die Ausstellung "Raoul Wallenberg -One Man Can Make a Difference" nach, die das Jüdische Museum in Stockholm noch bis Ende des Jahres zeigt.[2] Der im Zusammenhang mit Wallenberg immer wieder zitierte und beinahe schon bedeutungslos klingende Satz des "One Man Can Make A Difference" darf nicht darüber hinweg täuschen, dass diese Ausstellung weit mehr bietet als eine Wiederholung altbekannter Stereotypen. Bereits durch die interessante Zusammenstellung des Ausstellungsteams, bestehend aus einem Architekten, einem Historiker sowie eines Psychoanalytikers und eines Schrifstellers, entsteht wenn auch kein neues, so doch ein umfassendes und für viele unbekannt gebliebene Porträt Raoul Wallenbergs. Vor allem optisch wird diese Ausstellung zum Genuss dank der Glanzleistung des Architekten Gabriel Herdevall. Er löst sich von dem in diesem Zusammenhang oft bedienten Schautafelprinzip und gestaltet auf knapp 70ṃ eine spannende Inszenierung des Lebens, Wirkens sowie des Schicksals und Nachruhms Wallenbergs. Das Foto- und Objektmaterial ergänzend geben einige fiktive Briefe, realistisch nachempfunden, die uns unbekannt gebliebenen, möglichen Gedanken Wallenbergs wieder--ein Mythos wird menschlich und damit nachvollziehbar. Damit wird das Anliegen dieser sehenswerten Ausstellung eingelöst: der mythenumwobene, oft schon zur Chiffre verkommene Held wird seines überhöhten Status enthoben, um zu erzählen, wer er war, woher und weshalb er gekommen und wie sein Schicksal verlaufen ist. Es ist das große Verdienst dieser Ausstellung, dass es ihr gelingt, Raoul Wallenberg zu ehren ohne ihn zu mystifizieren: dabei schildert sie einfühlsam seine besondere familiäre Situation, den frühen Tod des Vaters, der noch vor der Geburt des Sohnes stirbt, die enge Beziehung zur Mutter und den Einfluss des Großvaters, durch den Raoul zum Kosmopoliten heranwächst. Es ensteht das Porträt eines begabten, sensiblen, weitgereisten jungen Mannes, der gewillt ist, die hohen, vor allem ideellen Erwartungen des Großvaters zu erfüllen, wann immer sich eine Gelegenheit dazu bietet. Das individuelle Schicksal dieser starken Persönlichkeit wird zusammengewoben mit dem historischen Zeitgeschehen. Helden entstehen weder über Nacht noch zusammenhanglos. Wallenberg erfuhr von den Vorgängen in Europa von den nach Palästina geflüchteten Juden, die er während seiner Anstellung in Haifa traf; in Stockholm arbeitete er für einen Exil-Ungarn, dem es als Juden nicht mehr möglich war, Geschäftsreisen nach Europa zu unternehmen, und so wurde Wallenberg ihm sowohl beruflich als auch privat zu einem wichtigen Mittelsmann. Erst durch die Darstellung des Zusammenwirkens herausragender Charaktereigenschaften--wie seinem Organisations- und Verhandlungstalent, seinem Engagement und Erfindungsreichtum, seinem unerhörten Arbeitspensum und seiner Handlungskraft[3]--mit den politischen Umständen wird nachvollziehbar, warum Wallenberg überhaupt in die Rolle des ,Rettungsengels' hineinwachsen konnte, als der er den Überlebenden im Gedächtnis blieb. Erst durch die differenzierte Darstellung dieses Zusammenspiels kann Raoul Wallenberg heute als Vorbild dienen, da er als Mensch nicht als entrückter Held geschildert wird. Und dennoch bleibt - verstärkt durch sein ungeklärtes Schicksal--trotz aller psychologischer Deutungsversuche die letztlich nicht gänzlich zu beantwortende Frage, warum Wallenberg bereit war, sich freiwillig in Gefahr zu begeben, um sich für das Leben anderer einzusetzen. Gabriel Herdevall versinnbildlicht die Verquickung der persönlichen Erfahrungswelt Wallenbergs mit dem historischen Geschehen, die zusammen den Mythos Wallenberg begründen. Man betritt das Museum und wird sogleich mit dem Handeln Wallenbergs konfrontiert: den Schilderungen von Überlebenden, der nach ihm benannten Preise und Auszeichnungen sowie Abbildungen und Modelle der Wallenberg zu Ehren errichteten Denkmäler. Dieser Eingangsbereich, zugleich Beginn und Ende der Ausstellung, ermöglicht einen sanften Einstieg in das Thema, denn er präsentiert, was allgemein mit Wallenberg assoziiert wird, das was geblieben ist: sein Nachruhm. Erst dann betritt man den eigentlichen Ausstellungsraum und begegnet dem weniger bekannten Wallenberg. Großformatige Familienphotos, collagenartig angeordnet, sind auf die Wände projiziert, persönliche Objekte wie Raouls Spielzeug in Nischen integriert--Kindheit, Jugend, Militärdienst und Studium in den USA--das Porträt verdichtet sich. Hörstationen vertiefen das Bild, geben Briefe von Raouls Mutter wieder, die von der Trauer über ihren verstorbenen Mann und von der Sorge, als Alleinerziehende dem Kind gerecht werden zu können, schreibt sowie Auszüge aus dem umfangreichen Briefwechsel Raouls mit dem Großvater.[4] Das Prinzip der bestmöglichen Ausnutzung des Raumes bestimmt die Inszenierung; Gazevorhänge sind mit Fotografien bedruckt, um Örtlichkeiten zu markieren und Stimmungen zu suggerieren, ermöglichen aber durch ihre Transparenz auch ein Nebeneinander des Politischen und Privaten.[5] So betritt man durch eben so einen Vorhang den nächsten Raum und befindet sich im besetzten Budapest, das Rollen von Panzerfahrzeugen ist zu hören, Maschinengewehrsalven lassen den Besucher aufhorchen; schlagartig trifft Licht auf eine Flagge mit Hakenkreuz, beleuchtet ein Foto der Erschiessungen oder der Todesmärsche. Hinter einem weiteren Gazevorhang schimmern gerettete Objekte einer jüdischen Familie hindurch. Gazetuch und gedämpfte Beleuchtung lassen die Szenerien wie im Nebel erscheinen, die privaten Zeugnisse wie die eingerahmten Fotografien müssen so erst entdeckt werden. Es geht um das Ineinanderverwobensein der Ereignisse und Personen, ihrer Abhängigkeiten voneinander: die deutsche Besatzung, der Putsch der Pfeilkreuzler im Oktober, die couragierten Helfer und ihre Schützlinge im ständigen Kampf ums Überleben. Und inmitten dieses Chaos'--quasi darin eingeschlossen und aus ihm heraus agierend--ein kleiner abgeteilter Raum, der der Hilfstätigkeit der schwedischen Botschaft gewidmet ist: die Schreibmaschine hämmert unablässig und verweist so auf den ungebrochenen Eifer und Einsatz Wallenbergs und seiner Helfer. Eine Karte, auf der die zahlreichen Schutzmaßnahmen zu sehen sind, verdeutlicht die logistische Leistung der Rettungsaktion mit den Krankenhäusern, Essensküchen und Schutzhäusern, die sich in Pest befanden. Eine Druckerpresse und ausgestellte Schutzpässe zeigen die Instrumentarien, die den neutralen Botschaften zur Verfügung standen. Durch die symbolische Platzierung der Rettungsmaßnahmen in den räumlichen Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung wird deutlich, dass Wallenberg aufgrund dieser im Gedächtnis bleiben soll. Durch das zerstörte Budapest geht es dem Kriegsende entgegen, was für Wallenberg ein ungewisses Schicksal im russischen Gulag bedeutet. Was bleibt ist seine von der Bildhauerin Ulla Kraitz in Bronze gegossene Aktentasche, abgestellt auf einigen Original-Pflastersteinen des ehemaligen Ghettos in Pest.[6] Das Schicksal des Mannes ist ungewiss, doch sein Eingreifen weder vergebens noch vergessen. Im schmalen Gang zum Ausgang hin zeugen zahlreiche Briefe von dem Engagement seiner Familie, die sich für seine Freilassung einsetzte; Zeitungsartikel berichten vom diplomatischen Versagen der schwedischen Regierung im Fall Wallenberg; Briefe von Schulkindern verweisen auf seine bis heute ungebrochene Popularität und Aktualität--zusammen geben sie die zahlreichen Facetten der Wallenberg-Erinnerung wieder. Wenn man dann im Aus- bzw. Eingangsbereich erneut auf die Zeugnisse seines Wirkens trifft, ist es mehr als Ehrfurcht vor seinem Nachruhm, die bewegt--Wallenbergs Handeln verpflichtet. Abstract: Boris Carmi gilt als Pionier der israelischen Presse- und Dokumentarfotografie. Der Autodidakt Carmi begleitete die Geschichte Israels ueber 60 Jahre lang mit der Kamera und verfolgte die turbulenten Phasen der Staatsgruendung und Staatsentwicklung mit sensiblem Blick. Die Fotografie half ihm, sich inmitten des Durcheinanders der abziehenden britischen Mandatsmacht, des beginnenden Krieges mit den Arabern, den Massen-Einwanderungen aus aller Welt und der Wirtschaftskrise zurechtzufinden. Er arbeitete fuer israelische Zeitungen und Zeitschriften, und seine stillen Bilder berichten von den enormen Herausforderungen, denen das junge Land ausgesetzt war. Die von ihm fotografierten Gesichter erzaehlen von Entwurzelung und Neuanfang, Aufbauwillen und Zukunftsangst. Er ergreift dabei niemals Partei, sondern erkundet das Lebensgefuehl der Menschen in einem Staat auf der Suche nach Identitaet und Normalitaet. Seine Arbeiten sind vom 15.5. - 27.6.2004 in der Akademie der Kuenste in Berlin erstmals als Einzelausstellung ausserhalb von Israel zu sehen. Abstract: This exhibition catalogue guides the visitor into Vienna the city of music. The essays collected here shed light on the role of the Jewish population and the fin-de-siecle conflict between the avant-garde and the reactionaries, showing that contrary to traditional notions, Jews were not always to be found in the modern camp. We furthermore document the expulsion and murder of Jewish musicians between 1938 and 1945 and their work in exile. A critical look at Vienna after 1945 concludes the volume.

Abstract: Sent across the ocean by their parents and taken in by foster parents and distant relatives, approximately 1,000 children, ranging in age from fourteen months to sixteen years, landed in the United States and out of Hitler's reach between 1934 and 1945. Seventy years after the first ship brought a handful of these children to American shores, the general public and many of the children themselves remain unaware of these rescues, and the fact that they were accomplished despite powerful forces in and outside the government that did not want them to occur. This is the first published account, told in the words of the children and their rescuers, to detail this unknown part of America's response to the Holocaust. It will challenge the belief that Americans did nothing to directly and actively save Holocaust victims.Judith Tydor Baumel, Holocaust scholar and sister of two rescued children, provides an introduction explaining why, when, how, and where the rescues were carried out, who the heroes and heroines were, and which individuals and organizations placed almost insurmountable obstacles in their path. Abstract: Vilna (Polish Wilno), modern Vilnius and capital of Lithuania, was the traditional spiritual and intellectual centre of Jewish thought in the Russian Empire. It was often referred to as the 'Jerusalem of Lithuania', a term that has now come to stand for the lost world of Jewish life in Europe. Most people today learned what they know about this Vilna from autobiographies or personal memoirs. This book takes a more objective look at how Vilna became a uniquely important centre of the Jewish press. In particular it follows the development of the Jewish press within the context of modernising Imperial Russia during the second half of the nineteenth century. Vilna is revealed as an important centre for the Jewish Socialist movement, the Bund, towards the turn of the nineteenth century and in the years running up to the 1905 Revolution. Bundist journalism is discovered to be the sponsor of a Jewish cultural ideology called Yiddishism.

Abstract: When Modigliani died in Paris in 1920, at the age of thirty-five, he became the standard-bearer for the myth of the bohemian artist ̶ the unappreciated ̮artist-geniusŁ consoled by wine and drugs. This celebrated myth is based on details of the artist̷s colorful life. As captivating as such biography may be, it does little to further our understanding of the man or his art. The story of Modigliani̷s life has eclipsed his work, severing it from the ideas and cultural traditions that might otherwise reveal its many meanings. Such mythmaking has made one of the best-known early modernist artists one of the most misunderstood. The Jewish Museum presents the first major exhibition of Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) in New York since his 1951 retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art. An anomaly among the many foreign Jewish artists who lived in Paris during the early 1900s, Modigliani remained independent of any movement or style, and was known primarily for his reclining nudes and portraits with elegantly elongated features. Modigliani: Beyond the Myth shows the full range of the artist's oeuvre ̶ painting, drawing and sculpture ̶ in an effort to reevaluate his position within the development of twentieth-century European modernism. Unlike previous retrospectives, Modigliani: Beyond the Myth also explores the artist's heritage as an Italian Sephardic Jew, and how it contributed to the development of a unique style that melded formalist innovation with a variety of historical models from Egyptian and classical to African. More than 100 of Modigliani's works from collections in the United States, Europe, South America and Australia are featured in this retrospective.

Abstract: Millions of miles away, on a giant Matzah Ball in outer space, lives a family of funny, furry aliens who just happens to be Jewish. Sadly, most Jewish traditions on Planet Matzah Ball have been lost. One starry night, just before Passover, an Intergalatic Passover Guide Book comes crashing donw on Planet Matzah Ball. The curious Jewish aliens who discover it decide to follow its instructions and have a Seder of their own! But there's a problem: they need someone to lead the Seder who will make sure that the most important parts of the Passover story are told. Oogy volunteers to find a leader and travels to Planet Earth on his spaceship in search of one. Crash landing in Cleveland, Ohio, right in the middle of the Rosenburg family Seder, he learns everything about Passover. But when it's time to return to Planet Matzah Ball, Oogy realizes that he hasn't accomplished his mission, for he still hasn't found a leader for his Seder - or has he? The Seder on Planet Matzah Ball, featuring puppets, animation and original music, is a wonderful way for children to learn the story and traditions of Passover.

Abstract: Ilan Pappe's book is the story of Palestine, a land inhabited by two peoples, and two national identities. It begins with the Ottomans in the early 1800s, the reign of Muhammad Ali, and traces a path through the arrival of the early Zionists at the end of that century, through the British mandate at the beginning of the twentieth century, the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, and the subsequent wars and conflicts which culminated in the intifadas of 1987 and 2000. While these events provide the background to the narrative and explain the construction of Zionist and Palestinian nationalism, at center stage are those who lived through these times, men and women, children, peasants, workers, town-dwellers, Jews and Arabs. It is a story of coexistence and cooperation, as well as oppression, occupation, and exile. Ilan Pappe is well known as a revisionist historian of Palestine and a political commentator on the Israel-Palestine conflict. His book is a unique contribution to the history of this troubled land which all those concerned with developments is the Middle East will be compelled to read. Ilan Pappe teaches politics at Haifa University in Israel. He has written extensively on the politics of the Middle East, and is well known for his revisionist interpretation of Israel's past and as a critic of Israel's policies towards the Palestinians. Abstract: The exhibition of laces from the collections of the Jewish Museum in Prague has been prepared for the eleventh World Lace Congress, which is being hosted by Prague in June. The exhibited selection presents a broad spectrum of bobbin laces not only on synagogue textiles, but also on garments and clothing accessories. The exhibition also includes portraits from the Jewish Museum's art collection. All the known textile techniques and materials are represented in the diverse textile collections of the Jewish Museum in Prague. The Museum's depositories also store a number of items whose ornamentation involves the use of bobbin lace in various forms. These synagogue and ceremonial textiles, garments and accessories, made over the course of almost four centuries, have not been presented to the public and specialists until this year. On the occasion of the eleventh World Lace Congress, organised by OIDFA (Organisation Internationale de la Dentelle au Fuseau et a l'Aiguille) in Prague, the Jewish Museum prepared an exhibition to mark the completion of a several-year research project into its collection of bobbin laces, which was supported financially by the Czech Ministry of Culture. The Jewish Museum's collection of textiles decorated with bobbin lace are an exceptionally precious set, the importance of which consists mainly in the uniquely preserved, comprehensive information available concerning the makers and the time and place the items were made. On the basis of a long- term research project into the textile collection, it has been possible to mark out certain turning points, particularly in the production of yard metal bobbin laces, and to accurately date the occurrence of certain lace- making and passement techniques. We are glad to have this opportunity to show you the results of this research. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue which presents a cross-section of all the types of lace in the textile collections of the Jewish Museum in Prague (120 pages, over 100 illustrations).The exhibition project has been supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.

Abstract: Through moving interviews with five ordinary people who rescued Jews during the Holocaust, Kristen Monroe casts new light on a question at the heart of ethics: Why do people risk their lives for strangers and what drives such moral choice? Monroe's analysis points not to traditional explanations - such as religion or reason - but to identity. The rescuers' perceptions of themselves in relation to others made their extraordinary acts spontaneous and left the rescuers no choice but to act. To turn away Jews was, to them, literally unimaginable. At the heart of this unusual book are the interviews with the rescuers, complex human beings from all parts of the Third Reich and all walks of life: Margot, a wealthy German who saved Jews while in exile in Holland; Otto, a German living in Prague who saved more than 100 Jews and provides surprising information about the plot to kill Hitler; John, a Dutchman on the Gestapo's ""Most Wanted List""; Irene, a Polish student who hid eighteen Jews in the home of the German major for whom she was keeping house; and Knud, a wartime policeman who took part in the extraordinary rescue of 85 percent of Denmark's Jews. We listen as the rescuers themselves.

Abstract: The Medieval world was a distinctive one, rich in change and diversity. Abstract: From 1933 to 1945, Nazi Germany carried out a campaign to "cleanse" German society of individuals viewed as biological threats to the nation's "health." Enlisting the help of physicians and medically trained geneticists, psychiatrists, and anthropologists, the Nazis developed racial health policies that began with the mass sterilization of "genetically diseased" persons and ended with the near annihilation of European Jewry. To relate this history, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has assembled objects, photographs, documents, and historic film footage from European and American collections and presents them in settings evoking medical and scientific environments. Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race provokes reflection on the continuing attraction of biological utopias that promote the possibility of human perfection. From the early twentieth-century international eugenics movements to present-day dreams of eliminating inherited disabilities through genetic manipulation, the issues remain timely. He examines both literary portrayals of Jews by Gentile writers - whether antisemitic, friendly, or ambivalent - and efforts to reinvent Jewish identities by the Jews themselves. The 'Jewish Question' in German Literature, 1749-1939 is an erudite and searching literary study of the uneasy position of the Jews in Germany and Austria from the first pleas for Jewish emancipation during the Enlightenment to the eve of the Holocaust. Trying to avoid hindsight, and drawing on a wide range of literary texts, Ritchie Robertson offers a close examination of attempts to construct a Jewish identity suitable for an increasingly secular world. He examines both literary portrayals of Jews by Gentile writers - whether antisemitic, friendly, or ambivalent - and efforts to reinvent Jewish identities by the Jews themselves, in response to antisemitism culminating in Zionism.
