Abstract:
Aloisius Cardinal Muench (1889-1962) was the Catholic liaison to the U.S. Army and papal emissary to postwar Germany. An examination of his correspondence during 1946-59, as well as of his diary, shows strong and tenacious antisemitic attitudes among members of the U.S. Catholic clergy, army, and military government in Germany. Despite his public anti-fascist statement, "The Church, Fascism, and Peace", Muench, a one-time admirer of Father Coughlin, also harbored antisemitic sentiments. The animosity of the military and the Catholic clergy was directed at the Jewish DPs, who were allegedly inciting antisemitism in postwar Germany with their behavior, and at the "vengeful" German Jewish refugees in the USA, who were hindering U.S. reconciliation with Germany.
