    Abstract: "Le projet de rédiger l'inventaire des documents consistoriaux concernant l'histoire du judaïsme algérien est né en 1979 sous l'impulsion de Gérard Nahon et soutenu par l'Institut Ben Zvi de l'Université Hébraïque de Jérusalem. Richard Ayoun a accompli la tâche colossale de rechercher, d'étudier ces archives en France, en Israël, aux États-Unis et en Algérie, de les dépouiller, les analyser et les répertorier avec rigueur, patience et détermination. Cet inventaire analytique des archives consistoriales des Juifs d'Algérie, depuis la conquête française en 1830 jusqu'à «la séparation des Églises et de l'État» en 1905, procure un accès direct au plus important ensemble de documents existants sur le sujet, les archives propres aux communautés d'Algérie ayant pratiquement disparu en 1962 dans la tourmente de l'exode. L'ouvrage couvre l'évolution du statut des Juifs d'Algérie ainsi que leur vie professionnelle, sociale, religieuse et culturelle. Le complète une bibliographie d'une extrême richesse étendue à des périodiques locaux aujourd'hui malaisément accessibles, pourvue d'une liste alphabétique des articles par auteurs et par titres. La période noire du judaïsme algérien durant la vague antisémite de la fin du XIXe siècle et l'Affaire Dreyfus, y apparaît sous un jour saisissant: vision au quotidien de la violence, de la haine suinant des articles de L'antisémite algérien (1897-1898), de son avatar le Nouvel Antisémite algérien (1898-1899),... Par delà l'objectif scientifique de l'auteur, demeurent la nécessité, la volonté, l'exigence, de retrouver la mémoire perdue des communautés juives algériennes, de la restituer, de la perpétuer. Ce livre se place dans la lignée des travaux archivistiques majeurs des XIXe et XXe siècles."--

Doch schon sein Sohn entschied sich für einen weltlichen Beruf und wurde Goldschmied in Königsberg. Von dort kam der Enkel meist in den Sommerferien zu Besuch - und musste erleben, wie er den strengen Maßstäben des Großvaters nicht mehr genügen konnte. In neun Kapiteln schildert Sturmann Freud und Leid seiner Kindheit, die jüdischen Rituale des Großvaters, aber auch das Erwachen der zionistischen Hoffnungen in der eigenen Familie und die damit verbundenen Spannungen. »Großvaters Haus«, geschrieben in Palästina 1941/42 und revidiert 1977, entfaltet einen ganz eigenen literarischen Reiz und wurde bislang nur in wenigen Auszügen veröffentlicht.

    Abstract: Im Spätsommer des Jahres 1975 bestieg Boris Lurie in New York ein sowjetisches Schiff, um nach Riga zu fahren und damit nach über 30 Jahren wieder in die Stadt zu kommen, in der er aufgewachsen war und wo er die Schrecken der deutschen Besatzungszeit hautnah miterleben musste. Insbesondere ein Geschehnis änderte dabei den Lauf seines Leben, als im Dezember 1941 im Wald von Rumbula Tausende Juden hingerichtet wurden, darunter Familienmitglieder Luries sowie seine damalige Freundin. Luries Leben teilte sich in ein vor und ein nach Rumbula, und sein Besuch dieses Ortes während seiner Reise führte auch dazu, dass er mit dem Schreiben begann und darüber in den Dialog mit denjenigen, die nicht mehr da waren. Nach Luries Tod entdeckte man in seinem Nachlass mehrere Boxen, gefüllt mit schriftlichen Aufzeichnungen und Zeitungsausschnitten. Aus Riga zurückgekommen, hatte Lurie damit begonnen, seine Erinnerungen an Riga während des Zweiten Weltkriegs niederzuschreiben, aber auch die Empfindungen während seiner Reise festzuhalten. Ein berührender Text, der die Frage aufwirft, wie man danach weiterleben kann.

    Abstract: Gennady Estraikh's book explores the birth, growth, demise and afterlife of the Birobidzhan Jewish Autonomous Region (JAR). The History of Birobidzhan looks at how the shtetl was widely used in Soviet propaganda as a perfect solution to the 'Jewish question', arguing that in reality, while being demographically and culturally insignificant, the JAR played a key, and essentially detrimental, role in determining Jewish rights and entitlements in the Soviet world. Estraikh brings together a broad range of Russian and Yiddish sources, including archival materials, newspaper articles, travelogues, memoirs, belles-letters, and scholarly publications, as he describes and analyses the project and its realization not in isolation, but rather in the context of developments in both domestic and international life. As well as offering an assessment of the Birobidzhan project in the contexts of Soviet and Jewish history, the book also focuses on the contemporary 'Jewish' role of the region which now has only a few thousand Jewish occupants amongst its residents

    Abstract: This book represents a new reading of a key moment in the history of East European Jewry, namely the period preceding the collapse of the Russian Empire. Offering a novel analysis of relations between the Russian army and Jews during the First World War, it points to the army and military authorities as the 'gravediggers' of the Jews' fragile co-existence with the tsarist regime. It focuses on various aspects of the Russian army's brutal treatment of Jews living in or near the Eastern Front, where three quarters of European Jewry were living when the war began. At the same time, it shows the enormous harm this anti-Jewish campaign wreaked on the Russian empire's economy, finances, public security, and international status

In den authentischen Gesprächsprotokollen macht die Autorin ein dunkles Kapitel unserer Geschichte lebendig, das uns kaum noch gegenwärtig ist. Sie verwebt die Gespräche mit einigen deutschen Elementen, die im fernen Argentinien ein überraschendes Eigenleben entwickelt haben. Den Abschluss bildet eine Lebensgeschichte, die kaum zu glauben ist. Die Tochter eines hohen Nazis lernt in Buenos Aires den Mann ihres Lebens kennen: einen Auschwitzüberlebenden.

    Abstract: Emma Kann (1914–2009) verließ 1933, direkt nach dem Abitur, ihre Heimatstadt Frankfurt am Main. Sie ging zuerst nach England, war Ende 1935 kurz bei ihrer älteren Schwester in den Niederlanden und arbeitete dann in Antwerpen. Als die deutsche Wehrmacht im Mai 1940 in Belgien einmarschierte, floh Emma Kann nach Frankreich, wo sie für vier Wochen im Lager Gurs interniert war. Über Kuba gelangte sie schließlich 1945 nach New York, wo sie bis 1981 lebte, bevor sie nach Deutschland zurückkehrte. Das hier erstmals aus dem Nachlass der Lyrikerin und Essayistin publizierte „Autobiographische Mosaik“ enthält poetologische Essays und Erinnerungen an ihre Kindheit und Jugend in Frankfurt während der Zwischenkriegszeit. Emma Kanns späte Reflexionen behandeln ihr Verhältnis zum Judentum und ihre Überzeugung von der Einheit der Welt, die in verblüffend einfacher Sprache aktuelle ökologische Positionen formulieren.

    Abstract: "This book investigates one of the major issues that runs through the history of Italian Judaism in the aftermath of emancipation: the correlation between integration, seen as the acquisition of citizenship and culture without renouncing Jewish identity, and assimilation, intended as an open refusal of Judaism of any participation in the community. On account of that correlation, identity has become one of the crucial problems in the history of the Italian Jewish community. This volume aims to discuss the setting of construction and formation--the family-- and focuses on women's experiences, specifically. Indeed, women were called through emancipation to ensure the continuity of Jewish religious and cultural heritage. It speaks to the growing interest for Women's and Gender Studies in Italy, and for the research on women's organizations which testify to the strong presence of Jewish women in the emancipation movement. In this rich, evocative account, James McAuley explores the central role that art and material culture played in the assimilation and identity of French Jews in the fin-de-siècle. Weaving together narratives of various figures, some familiar from the works of Marcel Proust and the diaries of Jules and Edmond Goncourt—the Camondos, the Rothschilds, the Ephrussis, the Cahens d'Anvers—McAuley shows how Jewish art collectors contended with a powerful strain of anti-Semitism: they were often accused of “invading” France’s cultural patrimony. The collections these families left behind—many ultimately donated to the French state—were their response, tragic attempts to celebrate a nation that later betrayed them.

They also contain memos and field reports authored by army officials, investigative commissions, humanitarian organizations, and government officials. Each chapter explains the origins, timing, and consequences of pogrom violence at various levels of society, as well as the lives, relationships, activities, and interactions of those groups of people that rarely appear in the historical literature. By providing a nuanced analysis of the specific geopolitical context where the violence erupted, each chapter captures the specific nature of the waves of pogroms that broke out in different regions and at different times.     Abstract: "Revolutionary Visions examines recent cinematic depictions of Jewish involvement in 1960s and 1970s revolutionary movements in Latin America. In order to explore the topic, the book bridges critical theory on religion, politics, and hegemony from regional Latin American, national, and global perspectives. Placing these theories in dialogue with recent films, the author asks the following questions: How did revolutionary commitment change Jewish community and families in twentieth-century Latin America? How did Jews contribute to revolutionary causes and what is the place of Jews in the legacies of revolutionary movements? How is film used to project self-representations of Jewish communities in the national project for a mainstream audience? Jewish involvement in revolutionary movements is rife with contradictions. On the one hand, it was a natural progression of patterns of political participation, based on the ideological affinities shared between Socialist movements and Marxist revolutionary politics. On the other hand, involvement in revolutionary politics would also upset the status quo of Jewish communities due to the extreme nature of revolutionary practices (e.g. guerrilla warfare), revolutionary groups' alignment with Palestine, and the assimilation into non-Jewish culture that revolutionary involvement often entailed. These contradictions between Jewish self-identification and revolutionary activity continue to confound cultural understandings of the points of contact between identities and political affinities. In this way, Revolutionary Visions contributes to timely debates within cultural studies surrounding identities and politics."--

    Abstract: This book charts the diachronic dimension of the processes by which Andalusi Muslim and Jewish elites created, asserted, refined, and adapted to new circumstances their respective claims of Andalusi and Sefardi singularity. The historical starting point for this inquiry-the mid-tenth century-is established by the textual evidence that has come down to us. The endpoint of this study's historical parameters is occasioned by social, religious, and political upheaval, collective trauma, and their jarring effects on cultural memory. For the Jews of Sefarad, the mid-twelfth century witnessed disruption within Andalusi Jewish society and transformation of its traditions. It saw the dispersal of most of the Jews of al-Andalus to the Iberian Christian kingdoms, to Provence, and to North Africa, where Andalusi Jewish exiles found refuge and Andalusi Jewish cultural production was relaunched in modified forms. For Andalusi Muslims, the Almohad military defeat at Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212, known in Arabic historiography as the monumental Battle of al-'Iqāb, and the Almohads' ensuing withdrawal from Andalusi territory signaled the end of the classical age of al-Andalus. Within a generation, Córdoba and Seville fell to Castilian control, leaving the Naṣrid kingdom of Granada-all that was left of al-Andalus-as the sole remaining outpost of an Islamic polity and society on Iberian soil down to 1492

    Abstract: Es ist kaum bekannt, dass die Nationalsozialisten auch aus Norwegen Juden nach Auschwitz deportierten. 776 Männer, Frauen und Kinder verschleppten sie mit Schiffen und Zügen dorthin. Nur 38 von ihnen überlebten – Robert Savosnick war einer von ihnen. Sein Bericht zeugt von dem Schicksal der norwegischen Häftlinge in Auschwitz und von seinem weiteren Weg über die Konzentrationslager Warschau, Dachau und Allach bis zu seiner Befreiung und Rückkehr nach Norwegen. Robert Savosnicks Buch ist ein bewegendes und erhellendes Zeugnis über ein wenig bekanntes Kapitel des Holocaust, das er vor allem auch für die nachfolgenden Generationen geschrieben hat.

Po wojnie wyemigrowała do Izraela, gdzie wychowywała się u rodziny ojca. Służyła zawodowo w Izraelskim Korpusie Morskim. Studiowała na Uniwersytecie Hebrajskim w Jerozolimie i na Uniwersytecie Kalifornijskim w Los Angeles (UCLA). Przez ponad 30 lat pracowała na Uniwersytecie w Hajfie. Ostatnio pełniła funkcję dyrektora administracyjnego Wydziału Nauk o Zdrowiu i Pracy Społecznej. Mieszka w Hajfie, ma dwoje dzieci, córkę i syna oraz sześcioro wnucząt.

Aber spätestens nach dem Überfall auf die Synagoge in Halle 2019 und der massiven Ausbreitung von antisemitischen Verschwörungsmythen in der Corona-Krise bekam dieses Bild tiefe Risse. Was erleben Jüdinnen und Juden in ihrem Alltag in Deutschland? Eva Gruberová und Helmut Zeller sind durch Deutschland gereist und haben zugehört — von Rostock über Berlin bis Dortmund und nach München, mit einem Abstecher nach Wien. Dabei zeigt sich, dass Juden hierzulande kein normales Leben führen können, es sei denn, man hält Polizei und Sicherheitszäune vor jüdischen Kindergärten, Brandanschläge auf Synagogen, Hakenkreuze auf Schulbänken, »Jude« als Schimpfwort auf dem Pausenhof, antisemitische Klassenchats, zerstörte Grabsteine, perfide Witze, Hitlergrüße und Schüler-Selfies an KZ-Gedenkstätten für etwas, das zur deutschen Normalität gehört. Juden sind nicht erst seit Halle, sondern seit Jahrzehnten Ziel rechtsextremer Angriffe und Mordanschläge. Sie erleben Übergriffe und Anfeindungen auch aus muslimisch geprägten Milieus, die oft selbst unter Rassismus leiden. Was aber viele nicht sehen: Antisemitismus kam und kommt aus der »bürgerlichen Mitte«. Die Reportagen, Interviews und Analysen machen sichtbar, dass der Judenhass tief in der Gesellschaft verwurzelt ist — und uns alle angeht.

Die in diesem Band enthaltenen chronologischen Aufzeichnungen aus dieser Zeit sind Teil eines 1949 auf Englisch erschienenen Buches und liegen erstmals auf Deutsch vor. Mit kritischer Distanz, um Ausgewogenheit bemüht, berichtet er vom Krieg, von seinen Reisen durchs Land, von den Leuten, denen er begegnet. - Ein Zeitdokument, das unmittelbar und ausführlich Einblicke in die ersten Monate des jungen Staates und den israelischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg gibt und vor allem für diejenigen, die sich tiefer mit der konfliktreichen Geschichte Israels beschäftigen wollen, von Interesse sein könnte.     Abstract: "This book explores Jewish emigration from Palestine and Israel from 1945 to the early 1960s. It investigates the motivations behind emigration, the experiences of migrants in their new destinations, and the public and institutional reactions to emigration both in Israel and in receiving countries. Although the dominant view in the Jewish and non-Jewish worlds was that displaced Jews should settle in the Land of Israel, tens of thousands of Jews who immigrated to the country subsequently left, either returning to their homes in Europe and the Middle East, or heading to new destinations, mainly in North America. While the Zionist movement aspired to create a sense of Jewish rootedness and permanence in the soil of the Land of Israel, the study argues that many Jews saw the country not as a permanent homeland or a final destination, but as a site of displacement or a way-station to more desirable lands. Based on personal accounts of emigrants, on archives of government institutions both in Israel and in destination countries, on records of aid societies and Jewish diaspora communities and on the popular press, the book challenges the widely-held assumption that Zionism provided an automatic answer to the plight of Jewish refugees after World War II"--

    Abstract: Educating Palestine, through the story of education and the teaching of history in Mandate Palestine, reframes our understanding of the Palestinian and Zionist national movements. It argues that Palestinian and Hebrew pedagogy could only be truly understood through an analysis of the conscious or unconscious dialogue between them. The conflict over Palestine, the study shows, shaped the way Arabs and Zionists thought, taught, and wrote about their past. British rule over Palestine promised the Jews a national home, but had no viable policy towards the Palestinians and established an education system that lacked a sustainable collective ethos. Nevertheless, Palestinian educators were able to produce a national pedagogy that knew how to work with the British and simultaneously promoted an ideology of progress and independence that challenged colonial rule

    Abstract: Edmund Allenby, Viscount Allenby of Megiddo and Felixstowe, as he became later, was the principal British military figure in the region from 1917 to 1919. He fulfilled a similar proconsular role in Egypt from the latter year until 1925. In these two roles Allenby's eight years in the Middle East were of great impact, and in probing his life an especially revealing window can be found through which to observe closely and understand more fully the history that has resulted in the terminal role afflicting the Middle East and international affairs today. Brad Faught's biography of Allenby explores the events and actions of Allenby's life, as well as to examine his thinking on both the British Empire and the post-World War I international order. Faught brings clarity to Allenby's decisive impact on British imperial policy in the making of the modern Middle East, and thereby on the long arc of the region's continuing and controversial place in world affairs

    Abstract: "Anti-Heimat Cinema: The Jewish Invention of the German Landscape studies an overlooked yet fundamental element of German popular culture in the twentieth century. In tracing Jewish filmmakers' contemplations of "Heimat"--A provincial German landscape associated with belonging and authenticity-it analyzes their distinctive contribution to the German identity discourse between 1918 and 1968. In its emphasis on rootedness and homogeneity Heimat seemed to challenge the validity and significance of Jewish emancipation. Several acculturation-seeking Jewish artists and intellectuals, however, endeavored to conceive a notion of Heimat that would rather substantiate their belonging. This book considers Jewish filmmakers' contribution to this endeavor. It shows how they devised the landscapes of the German "Homeland" as Jews, namely, as acculturated, "outsiders within." Through appropriation of generic Heimat imagery, the films discussed in the book integrate criticism of national chauvinism into German mainstream culture from World War One to the Cold War. Consequently, these Jewish filmmakers anticipated the anti-Heimat film of the ensuing decades, and functioned as an uncredited inspiration for the critical New German Cinema"--

    Abstract: Yiddish in Israel challenges the commonly held view that Yiddish was suppressed or even banned by Israeli authorities for ideological reasons, offering instead a radical new interpretation of the interaction between Yiddish and Israeli Hebrew cultures. Author Rachel Rojanski tells the compelling and yet unknown story of how Yiddish, the most widely used Jewish language in the pre-Holocaust world, fared in Zionist Israel, the land of Hebrew. Following Yiddish in Israel from the proclamation of the State until today, Rojanski reveals that although Israeli leadership made promoting Hebrew a high priority, it did not have a definite policy on Yiddish. The language's varyfortunerute through the years was shaped by social and political developments and the cultural atmosphere in Israel. Public perception of the language and its culture, the rise of identity politics, and political and financinterestsrsts all played a part. Using a wide range of archival sources, newspapers , and Yiddish literature, Rojanski follows the Israeli Yiddish scene through the history of the Yiddish press, Yiddish theater, early Israeli Yiddish literature, and high Yiddish culture. With compassion, she explores the tensions during Israel's early years between Yiddish writers and activists and Israel's leaders, most of whom were themselves Eastern European Jews balancing their love of Yiddish with their desire to promote Hebrew. Finally, Rojanski follows Yiddish into the 21st century, telling the story of the reviinteresterst in Yiddish among Israeli-born children of Holocaust survivors as they return to the language of their parents

    Abstract: "Between the world wars, a generation of Jewish leftist poets reached out to other embattled peoples of the earth-Palestinian Arabs, African Americans, Spanish Republicans-in Yiddish verse. Songs in Dark Times examines the richly layered meanings of this project, grounded in Jewish collective trauma but embracing a global community of the oppressed. The long 1930s, Amelia M. Glaser proposes, gave rise to a genre of internationalist modernism in which tropes of national collective memory were rewritten as the shared experiences of many national groups. The utopian Jews of Songs in Dark Times effectively globalized the pogroms in a bold and sometimes fraught literary move that asserted continuity with anti-Arab violence and black lynching. As communists and fellow travelers, the writers also sought to integrate particular experiences of suffering into a borderless narrative of class struggle. Glaser resurrects their poems from the pages of forgotten Yiddish communist periodicals, particularly the New York-based Morgn Frayhayt (Morning Freedom) and the Soviet literary journal Royte Velt (Red World). Alongside compelling analysis, Glaser includes her own translations of ten poems previously unavailable in English, including Malka Lee's "God's Black Lamb," Moyshe Nadir's "Closer," and Esther Shumiatsher's "At the Border of China." These poets dreamed of a moment when "we" could mean "we workers" rather than "we Jews." Songs in Dark Times takes on the beauty and difficulty of that dream, in the minds of Yiddish writers who sought to heal the world by translating pain"--

Dies ist die Geschichte der beiden – sie wurde geschrieben im Lager von Auschwitz. Das erschütternde Dokument wurde 1946 in den Niederlanden veröffentlicht. Nun liegt es erstmals auf Deutsch vor.

Der junge Mann übersteht eine erste Selektion durch Dr. Josef Mengele. Doch Auschwitz ist erst der Anfang. Bis zu seiner Befreiung durch heranrückende sowjetische Truppen im Frühjahr 1945 durchlebt Laszlo die Hölle der nationalsozialistischen KZ-Vernichtungsmaschinerie in vier weiteren Todeslagern: Sachsenhausen, Buchenwald, Ohrdruf und Theresienstadt. Der 1955 erstmals unter dem düster-ironischen Titel "Ferien am Waldsee" publizierte und seitdem zu Unrecht in Vergessenheit geratene fiktionalisierte Überlebensbericht des später in Basel und darüber hinaus weithin bekannten Kunstsammlers, Schriftstellers und Psychoanalytikers Carl Laszlo ist eines der frühesten literarischen Zeugnisse des Holocaust – und ein seltenes Dokument der ästhetischen Bewältigung des letztlich unsagbar bleibenden Grauens. Carl Laszlo (1923–2013) wuchs als Sohn einer assimilierten großbürgerlich-jüdischen Familie im ungarischen Pécs auf. Er besuchte das Zisterzienser-Gymnasium seiner Heimatstadt und wandte sich danach schnell dem Studium der Medizin zu. 1944 fiel der größte Teil von Laszlos vielköpfiger Familie dem Holocaust zum Opfer. Wie durch ein Wunder überlebte er selbst dagegen den mörderischen Aufenthalt in mehreren Konzentrationslager, darunter Auschwitz, Sachsenhausen und Buchenwald.Nach dem Krieg etablierte sich Laszlo erfolgreich als Psychoanalytiker und Kunsthändler in Basel. 1968 erhielt er die Schweizer Staatsbürgerschaft. Nicht zuletzt aufgrund persönlicher Kontakte zu namhaften Größen der internationalen Kunstszene baute Laszlo seine Sammlungen immer weiter aus. Neben mehreren tausend buddhistischen Statuen aus dem 15. bis 19. Jahrhundert umfasste seine Privatkollektion bei seinem Ableben 2013 u. a. zahlreiche bedeutende Werke von William Blake, Salvador Dalí, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Roy Lichtenstein und Andy Warhol.

    Abstract: "Is it possible to talk about antisemitism in the Middle Ages before the appearance of scientific concepts of "race"? In this work, François Soyer examines the nature of medieval anti-Jewish sentiment and violence. Analysing developments in Europe between 1100 and 1500, he points to the tensions in medieval anti-Jewish thought amongst thinkers who hoped to convert Jews and blamed Talmudic scholarship for their obduracy and yet who also, conversely, often essentialized Judaism to the point that it transformed into the functional equivalent of the modern concept of race. In a nuanced manner, he argues that, just as many historians now refer to "racisms" in the plural, we should not consider antisemitism as a monolithic concept but accept the existence of independent historical meanings and thus of antisemitisms (plural), including "medieval antisemitism" as distinct from anti-Judaism."--Back cover
