    Abstract: Much of the most recent research on Jewish scepticism was inspired by the work of the early modern Venetian rabbi Simone Luzzatto, the first thinker in the history of Jewish thought to declare himself a sceptic and a follower of the New Academy. This collected volume shines new light on the intimate relationship between Luzzatto’s sceptical thinking and an era marked by paradoxes and contrasts between religious devotion and scientific rationalism, as well as between the rabbinic-biblical Jewish tradition and the open tendency towards engagement with non-Jewish philosophical, literary, scientific, and theological cultures. It plots out an original path along which to understand Luzzatto’s scepticism by pointing to the various facets of being a Jewish sceptic in seventeenth-century Italy.

    Abstract: This collection of articles is tightly focused on metaphors in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible and their later afterlife in Jewish and Christian texts. The essays deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, several contributions employ metaphor theory in analysing the biblical texts, both conceptual frameworks such as blending theory and more traditional methods. Second, metaphors are studied both synchronically, that is, in relation to their current literary contexts, and diachronically, that is, mapping how they have been employed and re-interpreted in different ways and different texts throughout time. Third, other contributions read metaphors in light of theoretical frameworks such as feminist criticism, post-colonial theories, or power discourses that uncover aspects of significance often missed in historical studies. Finally, yet other contributions deal with the issue of how to translate metaphors in contemporary contexts

    Abstract: Jewish music has become the subject of a respectable literature in different academic disciplines and a touchstone of public and intellectual discourse in such diverse fields as the performing arts and religious studies, the visual arts and philology, cultural studies, and librarianship, and spanning topics that extend to almost all continents. As a forward-looking and multidisciplinary endeavor, The Oxford Handbook of Jewish Music Studies maps this emerging field within the framework of spatiality, temporality, and collectivity as analytical and conceptual categories. It does so by embracing all hemispheres, and interrogating Jewish music’s meaning of various places and spaces across the temporal frame of antiquity through the early twenty-first century. The introductory chapter provides a theoretical foundation that paves the way for the rich selection of case studies brought together in the subsequent sections. These case studies document the different facets of Jewish music and theorize its multivalent correlation with spaces and collectives around the world. The thirty diverse chapters, conceived by an international team of thirty-one outstanding scholars, are divided into eight thematically organized sections, the first of which addresses Jewish music in various lands and territories (some without defined borders in time and space), followed by sections that focus on cities, as well selected spaces therein—ghetto, concert hall, archive, and sacred and ritual spaces. These sections, which largely look at actual and concrete spaces (roughly presented in the order of scale), are followed by the phenomenological spaces of destruction and remembrance, and shekhinah, that is, divine presence.

    Abstract: "The international conference "Psalms in Rituals from Antiquity to the Present," held on October 24-26, 2018, at the Max-Weber Kolleg in the University of Erfurt, Germany, aimed to showcase and also to build upon recent developments in what has become a very exciting field, bringing to it the distinctive perspective of the Research Centre "Dynamics of Jewish Ritual Practices in Pluralistic Contexts from Antiquity to the Present," which hosted the event.     Abstract: Theology is the science of the incomprehensible. Understood as an independent university discipline, it offers multifaceted perspectives that require not only an interdisciplinary but also an epistemological balancing act. Scientific theology in this sense is always exchange, reflection, encounter, and positioning as well as a form of transcendence. In thirteen contributions, the international authors shed light on the phenomenon of theology as an independent scientific discipline from different disciplinary, but also epistemological and religious points of view, which always oscillates between tradition, its own reflexivity and its relation to the world. The common characteristic feature is the border crossing along the intangible.     Abstract: Theologie ist die Wissenschaft vom Unbegreifbaren. Als eigenständige universitäre Disziplin verstanden bietet sie facettenreiche Perspektiven, die nicht nur einen interdisziplinären, sondern zugleich epistemologischen Balanceakt erfordern. Wissenschaftliche Theologie in diesem Sinne ist immer Austausch, Reflexion, Begegnung und Positionierung sowie eine Form von Transzendenz. In dreizehn Beiträgen beleuchten die internationalen Autor*innen aus unterschiedlichen disziplinären, aber auch erkenntnistheoretischen und religiösen Standpunkten das Phänomen von Theologie als eigenständiger wissenschaftlicher Disziplin, die stets zwischen Tradition, einer ihr eigenen Reflexivität und dem Bezug zur Welt changiert.     Abstract: A History of Anti-Semitism examines the history, culture and literature of antisemitism from antiquity to the present. With contributions from an international team of scholars, whose essays were specially commissioned for this volume, it covers the long history of antisemitism starting with ancient Greece and Egypt, through the anti-Judaism of early Christianity, and the medieval era in both the Christian and Muslim worlds when Jews were defined as 'outsiders,' especially in Christian Europe. This portrayal often led to violence, notably pogroms that often accompanied Crusades, as well as to libels against Jews. The volume also explores the roles of Luther and the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the debate over Jewish emancipation, Marxism, and the social disruptions after World War 1 that led to the rise of Nazism and genocide. Finally, it considers current issues, including the dissemination of hate on social media and the internet and questions of definition and method.

    Abstract: Collaborative engagement between activist academics from Israel and Northern Ireland highlighted the challenges and potential of working through education to promote shared learning and shared life in divided societies. Following these initial explorations, the volume brought together educationalists from Europe, the United States and South Africa to widen the range of experience and insights, and broaden the base of the conversation. The result is this book on the role of shared education, not only in deeply divided societies, but also in places where minorities face discrimination, where migrants face prejudice and barriers, or where society fails to deal positively with cultural diversity. Together, the contributors challenged themselves to develop theoretical and practical paradigms, based on practical knowledge and experience, to promote activist pedagogies. Their shared purpose was to work for more humane, just and democratic societies, in which education offers genuine hope for sustained transformational change. The four main themes around which the book is organized are: educating for democratic-multicultural citizenship, models of shared learning, nurturing intercultural competencies, and reconciling dialogue in the face of conflicting narratives. The book draws on a wide range of international perspectives and insights to identify practical strategies for change in local contexts

    Abstract: Dieses Buch untersucht multiperspektivisch die Wirkungsgeschichte der Shoah in verschiedenen Settings von Erziehung und Bildung und reflektiert die bisherige theoretische und empirische Forschung. Das Wissen über und Bezüge zur Shoah vermitteln sich zwischen den Generationen weiter und aktualisieren sich zugleich fortlaufend in institutionellen und diskursiven Kontexten der Gegenwartsgesellschaft. Dies betrifft Pädagog*innen in mehrfacher Hinsicht: In ihrer eigenen Biographie und Lerngeschichte und in ihrer späteren Vermittlungspraxis. Die Autor*innen beschäftigen sich u.a. mit der Erinnerungspolitik, Gefühlserbschaften und der Thematisierbarkeit der Shoah in verschiedenen Sozialisierungsprozessen. The National Socialist era still has repercussions on society today. But how is the Shoah addressed in studies and teaching? This book examines the history of the impact of the Shoah in various settings of education and reflects on the theoretical and empirical research to date. Knowledge about and references to the Shoah continue to be transmitted between generations and at the same time are continuously updated in institutional and discursive contexts of contemporary society. This affects educators in several ways: in their own biographies and learning histories and in their subsequent teaching practice. The authors deal, among other things, with the politics of memory, the inheritance of feelings and the possibility of addressing the Shoah in various socialisation processes.

    Abstract: "In Unveiling the Hidden-Anticipating the Future: Divinatory Practices Among Jews Between Qumran and the Modern Period, Josefina Rodríguez-Arribas and Dorian Gieseler Greenbaum collect ten studies based on primary sources ranging from Qumran to the modern period and covering Europe and the Mediterranean basin. The studies show Jews practising divination (astrology, bibliomancy, physiognomy, dream requests, astral magic, etc.) and implementing the study and practice of the prognostic arts in ways that allowed Jews to make them "Jewish," by avoiding any conflict with Jewish law or halakhah. These studies focus on the Jewish components of this divination, providing specific firsthand details about the practices and their practitioners within their cultural and intellectual contexts-as well as their fears, wishes, and anxieties-using ancient scrolls and medieval manuscripts in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Judaeo-Arabic.     Abstract: In Sirach and Its Contexts an international cohort of experts on the book of Sirach locate this second-century BCE Jewish wisdom text in its various contexts: literary, historical, philosophical, textual, cultural, and political. First compiled by a Jewish sage around 185 BCE, this instruction enjoyed a vibrant ongoing reception history through the middle ages up to the present, resulting in a multiform textual tradition as it has been written, rewritten, transmitted, and studied. Sirach was not composed as a book in the modern sense but rather as an ongoing stream of tradition. Heretofore studied largely in confessional settings as part of the Deuterocanonical literature, this volume brings together essays that take a broadly humanistic approach, in order to understand what an ancient wisdom text can teach us about the pursuit of wisdom and human flourishing

    Abstract: Antisemitismus wird in der Schulsozialarbeit und im Studium der Sozialen Arbeit zu wenig thematisiert. Das Buch zeigt mithilfe von Antisemitismus-Expert_innen Wege und Strategien auf, um das zu ändern. In den einzelnen Beiträgen wird es immer wieder deutlich: Antisemitismus muss in der Schule wie auch in anderen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen wahrgenommen, erkannt und bekämpft werden. Dafür benötigen wir in der Sozialen Arbeit das nötige Wissen und Können, aber auch eine antisemitismuskritische Haltung. Der internationale Ethikkodex und das daraus entwickelte Konzept Diskriminierungskritische Soziale Arbeit fordern uns auf, Strategien aus dem Konzept »Social Justice und Diversity« der Policy Practice auch in Bezug auf Antisemitismus umzusetzen. Mit Beiträgen von Sharon Adler, Debora Antmann, Miriam Burzlaff, Jonathan Czollek, Nina Coenen und Sami Alkomi, Kiana Ghaffarizad, Jana Kühn, Esther Lehnert, Heike Radvan, Peter Schüler und Romina Wiegemann.

    Abstract: Neben dem Holocaust zählt die „Euthanasie“ zu den großen NS-Massenverbrechen. In diesem Band werden die Verflechtungen der beiden Verbrechenskomplexe auf Basis neuester Forschungsergebnisse intensiv untersucht. Die Zusammenhänge zwischen der nationalsozialistischen „Euthanasie“ und dem Holocaust sind noch immer nicht vollständig erforscht. Der Sammelband, zu dem namhafte Forscherinnen und Forscher beigetragen haben, beschäftigt sich mit den Beziehungen zwischen den beiden Mordprogrammen. Er benennt Kontinuitäten, Kausalitäten und parallele Entwicklungen. Dabei geht es um Themen wie Biopolitik, Eugenik und Zwangssterilisation, die Judenverfolgung in der Vorkriegszeit, die Morde im Rahmen der „Aktion T4“, die Krankenmorde in den Konzentrationslagern und im besetzten Polen, die „Aktion Reinhardt“ sowie die justizielle Ahndung der Verbrechen nach 1945. Die Untersuchungen erweitern unser Verständnis von den Verbrechen im Nationalsozialismus insgesamt und speziell zum Verhältnis von „Euthanasie“ und Holocaust.

    Abstract: Der Band präsentiert die Vielfalt der jüdischen Erfahrungen in der unmittelbaren Nachkriegszeit erstmals aus einer gesamteuropäischen, transnationalen Perspektive. Die elf Essays und zahlreichen Abbildungen zeigen, dass jüdische Überlebende und Flüchtlinge keine apathische Gruppe von Opfern waren, sondern ihr Schicksal nach dem Zivilisationsbruch aktiv in die Hand nahmen: Sie suchten überlebende Verwandte, organisierten ihre Ausreise, versuchten trotz katastrophaler Zustände soziale Netzwerke und jüdische Gemeinden wiederaufzubauen und bemühten sich um Gerechtigkeit und Wiedergutmachung sowie um die Dokumentation der nationalsozialistischen Verbrechen. Vor dem Hintergrund der aktuellen Flüchtlingskrise und dem Zunehmen nationalistischer Politik in Europa fokussiert der Band auf die unmittelbare Nachkriegszeit als Geburtsstunde der europäischen Idee und zeigt, wie sich eben diese Idee in den Biographien überlebender Jüdinnen und Juden abzeichnet.     Abstract: Die religiös-weltanschauliche Vielfalt in unserer Gesellschaft ist zu einer zentralen Herausforderung für alle Bildungsprozesse geworden. Im Religionsunterricht geht es jedoch nicht einfach um Interreligiosität im Allgemeinen, sondern zumeist um bestimmte Religionen wie Judentum und Islam. Die Bildungspläne zeigen dabei an, dass Judentum und Islam im Unterricht vermehrt Berücksichtigung finden sollen, auch schon zu Beginn der Sekundarstufe I und mitunter in gemeinsamen Unterrichtseinheiten zu beiden Religionen zugleich. Aber wie soll der Religionsunterricht dann konkret ausgestaltet werden? Der vorliegende Band nimmt diese Frage mit religionsdidaktischen Analysen sowie einer Untersuchung zu Bildungsplänen und Materialien für den Unterricht auf. Darüber hinaus wird eine empirische Untersuchung zu unterschiedlichen Möglichkeiten der Umsetzung der neuen Bildungsplanvorgaben vorgestellt. Die Befunde werden von Fachleuten aus der Aus- und Fortbildung für den Religionsunterricht aus der Perspektive der Praxis kommentiert. Der Band geht auf eine innovative Kooperation zwischen dem Lehrstuhl für Religionspädagogik an der Evangelisch-Theologischen Fakultät in Tübingen, den Staatlichen Seminaren für Didaktik und Lehrerbildung (Gymnasien) in Stuttgart und Tübingen sowie dem Pädagogisch-Theologischen Zentrum in Stuttgart-Birkach zurück.

    Abstract: Continuing his contribution to medieval Jewish intellectual history, Haym Soloveitchik focuses here on the radical pietist movement of Ḥasidei Ashkenaz and its main literary work, Sefer Ḥasidim, and on the writings and personality of the Provençal commentator Ravad of Posquières. In both areas Soloveitchik challenges mainstream views to provide a new understanding of medieval Jewish thought. Some of the essays are revised and updated versions of work previously published and some are entirely new, but in all of them Soloveitchik challenges reigning views to provide a new understanding of medieval Jewish thought.The section on Sefer Ḥasidim brings together over half a century of Soloveitchik’s writings on German Pietism, many of which originally appeared in obscure publications, and adds two new essays. The first of these is a methodological study of how to read this challenging work and an exposition of what constitutes a valid historical inference, while the second reviews the validity of the sociological and anthropological inferences presented in contemporary historiography. In discussing Ravad’s oeuvre, Soloveitchik questions the widespread notion that Ravad’s chief accomplishment was his commentary on Maimonides’ Mishneh torah; his Talmud commentary, he claims, was of far greater importance and was his true masterpiece. He also adds a new study that focuses on the acrimony between Ravad, as the low-born genius of Posquières, and R. Zerahyah ha-Levi of Lunel, who belonged to the Jewish aristocracy of Languedoc, and considers the implications of that relationship.Continuing his major contribution to medieval Jewish intellectual history, Haym Soloveitchik focuses here on the radical German Pietists and their main literary work Sefer Ḥasidim, and on the writings and personality of the Provençal commentator Ravad of Posquières.     Abstract: The Lost Mirror traces cultural patterns in which the interpretation of learning and education was developed against the backdrop of Hebrew thought. The appreciation of learning is deeply rooted in the Hebrew way of thinking. Learning is understood as an open and history-conscious engagement of man with culture. The consciousness of history is shaped by the motif of the unavailability of the "other" and the difference to this "other". This "other" is traditionally remembered as "God", but may also be reflected in the motifs of the other person or the other society. The Lost Mirror reminds us of a deficit, which is that in our everyday thinking and everyday action, we usually hide, forget and partly suppress the meaning and presence of the unavailable other. The book approaches this thinking through portraits of people such as Janusz Korczak, Martin Buber, Hannah Arendt, Emmanuel Levinas, Jean-Francois Lyotard and others

    Abstract: Whether forced by governmental decree, driven by persecution and economic distress, or seeking financial opportunity, the Jews of early modern Europe were extraordinarily mobile, experiencing both displacement and integration into new cultural, legal, and political settings. This, in turn, led to unprecedented modes of social mixing for Jews, especially for those living in urban areas, who frequently encountered Jews from different ethnic backgrounds and cultural orientations. Additionally, Jews formed social, economic, and intellectual bonds with mixed populations of Christians. While not necessarily effacing Jewish loyalties to local places, authorities, and customs, these connections and exposures to novel cultural settings created new allegiances as well as new challenges, resulting in constructive relations in some cases and provoking strife and controversy in others.The essays collected by Francesca Bregoli and David B.
    Abstract: Ruderman in Connecting Histories show that while it is not possible to speak of a single, cohesive transregional Jewish culture in the early modern period, Jews experienced pockets of supra-local connections between West and East—for example, between Italy and Poland, Poland and the Holy Land, and western and eastern Ashkenaz—as well as increased exchanges between high and low culture.

    Abstract: Kanade, di Goldene Medine offers a broad study of its field, with equal attention to English- and French-language materials and contexts. The volume’s essays highlight the fundamental link between the culture and life of Canadian Jews and their Polish roots. This focus brings Yiddish to the fore, in essays focusing on the history of Canadian Yiddish literature, and the relevance of the language for contemporary Canadian Chasidic communities. However, essays in this volume also highlight the writings of contemporary authors, working both in French and English. Thus, the collection explores culture at the borderlands of three languages, with an eye for the link between New Worlds and Old. Kanade, di Goldene Medine apporte une contribution importante à l’étude de la littérature et la culture juives canadiennes, tout en étant attentif aux textes et contextes anglophone et francophone ainsi qu’à l’univers particulier des juifs hassidiques de Montréal. Le volume tient également compte du lien fondamental entre la créativité des juifs canadiens et leurs racines est-européennes, en particulier polonaises, et de la présence de la langue yiddish − ou de son imaginaire − dans leurs textes sous forme de traduction ou autotraduction. Le lecteur pourra cerner dans ce livre des perspectives transversales qui mettent en relation des itinéraires multiples et diversifiés noués entre le Nouveau Monde et le Vieux

    Abstract: Zum 80. Todestag von Ernst Toller (1893–1939) widmet sich TEXT+KRITIK der ganzen Breite seiner schriftstellerischen Produktion, die nicht nur in enger Verbindung zur Politik, sondern auch zu den modernen Massenmedien steht. Der Schriftsteller Ernst Toller ist im kollektiven Gedächtnis vor allem als Autor von Stücken wie Masse Mensch und Hinkemann sowie der Selbstbiografie Eine Jugend in Deutschland präsent. Was er darüber hinaus an literarischen Werken gescha?en hat, ist dagegen weitgehend in Vergessenheit geraten. Untersucht werden neben den erwähnten Texten die Gedichte, die proletarischen Massenfestspiele, die Arbeiten für Rundfunk und Kino, die Reiseberichte und die Aufzeichnungen zum Spanischen Bürgerkrieg sowie die Briefe, die jüngst gesammelt ediert wurden.     Abstract: Die Samuelbücher beschreiben einen bestimmten Abschnitt der Geschichte Israels, sind also Geschichtsschreibung - freilich ganz eigener Art -, und sie tun es in ästhetisch höchst anspruchsvoller Weise, sind also ein literarisches Kunstwerk - ebenfalls ganz eigener Art. Beiden Aspekten gehen die hier vorgelegten Studien nach: zuerst in betont fachexegetischer, historisch-wissenschaftlicher Herangehensweise, dann in thematischen Längsschnitten und in Porträts einzelner Erzählfiguren. Im Ergebnis zeigen sich ein ganz spezifisches Verhältnis von Faktizität und Fiktionalität, eine höchst feinsinnige Erzählkunst und sehr prägnante Menschen- und Gottesbilder.
