Abstract:
Examines the strategy and style used in the "Mitteilungen aus dem Verein zur Abwehr des Antisemitismus" (a fortnightly publication) to counter antisemitic passages in the wartime writings of Chamberlain, the leading German antisemitic writer of the time. The journal was forced to conduct its counter-propaganda amidst the pressures of wartime patriotism and the necessity of keeping the "civil peace" in the country. Examines the defense tactics to which the "Mitteilungen" resorted. In order to discredit Chamberlain, with his patriotism, his great popularity, and his Iron Cross received from the Kaiser, the journal pointed out the inconsistencies, numerous mistakes, and falsifications in his writings, as well as his attacks on the Church, on the Reichstag and on prominent German scholars, not to speak of his non-German origins.
