Abstract:
Presents two documents concerning the civic rights of Jews in Moldavia under Turkish rule. The first is a letter dated 6 June 1855, addressed to the Moldavian prince Grigore Ghyka, from the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, based on a petition sent by the Moldavian Jewish community complaining about the inequality of their status in comparison with the Christian population. The Moldavian Jews asked, among other matters, for the right to buy land and the lowering of taxes. The second document is a letter dated 10 July 1856, sent to Grigore Ghyka by members of the Jewish community in Iaşi, complaining about their legal discrimination. These complaints did not lead to any change in the situation of the Moldavian Jews.
