Abstract:
Examines the political and social policies of the Vichy government regarding the Jews, underscoring the issue of delegation of authority to subordinates, a major argument in the defense of Maurice Papon at his trial in Bordeaux. Presents results of archival research in the mid-1990s regarding the attitude towards Jews of the Vichy judicial, political and administrative apparatus. Contends that the court wrongfully exonerated Papon for complicity in deporting Jews because of the prevailing attitude that Vichy was not truly a French regime. Criticizes the government for not taking full advantage of the archives, which are a rich source of information about life during the wartime period. Concludes that the search for the truth about the role played by the Vichy regime in the murder of French Jews should be as high a priority today as was the postwar effort to punish collaborators.
