Abstract: PEACE AND FAITH: Christian Churches and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, composed of new essays, is the first collection to bring together writers from different faith communities to discuss the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement's impact on one of the more fractious topics addressed by Christian denominations: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In so doing, it builds on interfaith projects under way for decades. Theology and politics intermingle in debates taking place in local churches, Christian NGOs, and national church meetings that define official policy. The debates revive and reframe the most basic values of Christianity and the questions church members seek to resolve: How do Christians today hew to the principles Jesus articulated? How can justice be pursued in the context of competing national narratives and historical understandings? What bearing do or should centuries of Christian violence against Jews and Muslims have on contemporary theology and ethics? Is it ethical, or even possible, to set aside millennia of Christian anti-Semitism in judging Israel's conduct? What Christian values should be honored in pursuing Jesus's mission of reconciliation today? How may the pursuit of truth be corrupted by passionate social witness? Can advocacy cross the line into hatred? These are among the critical questions this collection poses and attempts to address

Abstract: For years, anti-Zionist activists have accused Israel of undermining academic freedom and campus free speech in both Gaza and the West Bank. Not in Kansas Anymore demonstrates conclusively that the major threats to academic freedom come from Palestinians themselves, including from both the Palestinian Authority and from paramilitary and terrorist groups, Hamas most prominent among them. This is the first thoroughly researched and documented study of the status of academic freedom in Gaza and the West Bank

Abstract: "Swimming against the Current comprises a collection of essays celebrating the career and achievements of Rabbi Chaim Seidler-Feller, who served as Executive Director of Hillel at UCLA for forty years and continues to be an influential leader in the Los Angeles and wider American Jewish community. These articles, like the honoree, challenge intellectual convention and accepted wisdom by breaking new ground in how they approach their subjects. They are divided into four categories that hold special interest for Seidler-Feller: Bible and Talmud, Jewish Thought and Theology, Modern Jewish History and Sociology, and Zionism and Jewish Politics. The volume also includes a sketch of Seidler-Feller's life and work, a bibliography of his publications, and tributes by students and colleagues"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: "The notion that the God of the Hebrew Bible and rabbinic literature, "the God of the Jews," is perfectly good is challenged by apparently immoral acts-by contemporary standards-of that God, as well as by the classic problem of evil. In this book, Jerome Gellman provides ways to question and overcome these challenges, addresses the faithful who are tested by these two problems, and aims to lighten the challenges for them while preserving God's perfect goodness. He recommends replacing a God of the Jews with a different God, a "Jewish God," one in whom many traditional Jews have come to believe. Gellman also offers the traditional believer a possible theodicy explaining much evil. The book is at once analytic in style and Hasidic in broad orientation"--

Abstract: Filled with new elements that challenge common scholarly theses, this book acquaints the reader with the “Jewish problem” of sociology and provides what this academic discipline urgently needs: a one-volume history of the Sociology of the Holocaust. The story of why and how sociologists as well as the schools of sociological thought came to confront the Holocaust has never been entirely told. The volume offers original insights on the nature of American sociology with implications for the post-Holocaust sociology development

Abstract: From her immigration to Mandatory Palestine in 1933 until her death in 1950 American-born Dorothy Kahn Bar-Adon worked as a reporter for The Palestine Post (later The Jerusalem Post), while freelancing for periodicals in Palestine and abroad. Bar-Adon covered life in towns, kibbutzim and Arab communities of Mandatory Palestine during this period of World War, armed conflict between Arabs and Jews, immigration to Israel of Holocaust survivors. Close to 60 years after her death, this edited collection of Bar-Adon's writing offers a vivid view both of daily life in the Jewish and Arab communities of pre-State Israel, and of the burning issues of the day

Abstract: The Jewish community of the city of Kleczew came into existence in the sixteenth century. It remained large and strong throughout the next four hundred years, and in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it constituted 40-60% of the total population. The German army entered Kleczew on September 15, 1939, shortly after the outbreak of World War II. The communities of Kleczew and the vicinity were among the first Jewish collectives in Europe to be totally destroyed. The events presented in this book reveal that the organization of deportations and the methods of mass murder conducted in this district, by Kommando Lange, served as a model that would be applied later in the death camps during the mass extermination of Polish and European Jewry. If so, it was in the woods near Kleczew that the "Final Solution of the Jewish Question" began

Abstract: "Rosh Hashanah is just one of two surviving Jewish new years from antiquity, the other being the month in which Passover falls. The two are exactly six months apart, proper symbolism of the age-old Jewish struggle to balance two contrasting principles: universalism and particularism. Passover's central theme is the particularistic tale of the Jewish People released from servitude in Egypt to fulfill its historic destiny. The message of Rosh Hashanah, by contrast, is the universalistic definition of that destiny, the role that every Jew must play simply by virtue of being human, and the role of Judaism in helping Jews play that role with proper passion and commitment. This interweaving of a universalistic purpose to Israel's mission along with the particularistic affirmation that Israel has such a mission in the first place occurs throughout the High Holy Day liturgy, particularly in the prayers represented in this fifth volume in the Prayers of Awe series. The title, All the World, derives from a famous translation of an early medieval poem that is part of the new year liturgy. It is juxtaposed to other prayers of a universalistic nature, particularly Uv'khen, literally, "And therefore," a regular addition to the central Jewish prayer, the Amidah. "And therefore" launches the ultimate Jewish question: What's the point of it all, which is to say, "And therefore, what?" It combines the particularistic concern for Israel as a People called by God with the universalistic proclamation that Israel is called for universal ends"--

Abstract: "In Mo(ve)ments of Resistance, Grinberg summarizes both his own work and that of other political economists, providing a coherent historical narrative covering the time from the beginning of Socialist Zionism (1904) to the Oslo Accords and the neoliberalization of the economy (1994-1996). The theoretical approach of the book combines eventful sociology, path dependency, and institutional political economy. Grinberg argues that historical political events have been shaped not only by political and economic forces but also by resistance struggles of marginal and weaker social groups: organized workers, Palestinians, and Mizrachi Jews. Major turning points in history, like the Separation War in 1948, the military occupation in 1967, and the Oslo peace process in 1993, are explained in the context of previous social and economic resistance struggles that affected the political outcomes

Abstract: Moses Maimonides (1138-1204) is Jewish history's greatest exponent of a rational, philosophically sound Judaism. He strove to reconcile the teachings of the Bible and rabbinic tradition with the principles of Aristotelian philosophy, arguing that religion and philosophy ultimately must arrive at the same truth. Baruch Spinoza (1632-77) is Jewish history's most illustrious "heretic". He believed that truth could be attained through reason alone, and that philosophy and religion were separate domains that could not be reconciled. His critique of the Bible and its teachings caused an intellectual and spiritual upheaval whose effects are still felt today. Rabbi Marc D. Angel discusses major themes in the writings of Maimonides and Spinoza to show us how modern people can deal with religion in an intellectually honest and meaningful way. From Maimonides, we gain insight on how to harmonize traditional religious belief with the dictates of reason. From Spinoza, we gain insight into the intellectual challenges which must be met by modern believers--Book jacket

Abstract: Review quote.

Abstract: Review quote.
In this compelling work, Dr. Muffs calls for a remythologizing (not a demythologizing) of our theology - one that allows us to delight in the personhood and mythic character of God as poetically formulated models of our own humanity."--Jacket

Abstract: The quest for spirituality is universal, and so is the confusion that often comes with choosing the path to spirituality that is right for you. Within Judaism alone, there are many distinct avenues of spiritual expression that can nourish the soul and mind. Where do we begin to find the one that's just right for us?
Abstract: A self-proclaimed rationalist, Rabbi Rifat Sonsino maintains that "there is not one correct way to Jewish spirituality that works for everyone, but there is a way for everyone." He offers a straightforward, objective discussion of the many ways -- each valid and authentic -- through which seekers can gain enrichment within the framework of Judaism
Abstract: For each path, Rabbi Sonsino defines its spirituality and explains its basis within Jewish tradition, including: -- Acts of Transcendence-- Study-- Prayer-- Meditation-- Ritual-- Relationship and Good Deeds
Abstract: A refreshing rationalist approach to finding your own way to spirituality within Judaism

Abstract: 1933 ist der Roman in Amsterdam erschienen.
