The book is organized around several key moments, such as his sudden abandonment by his mother when he was a child of three, a foundational trauma that, Mendes-Flohr shows, left an enduring mark on Buber’s inner life, attuning him to the fragility of human relations and the need to nurture them with what he would call a “dialogical attentiveness.” Buber’s philosophical and theological writings, most famously I and Thou, made significant contributions to religious and Jewish thought, philosophical anthropology, biblical studies, political theory, and Zionism. In this accessible new biography, Mendes-Flohr situates Buber’s life and legacy in the intellectual and cultural life of German Jewry as well as in the broader European intellectual life of the first half of the twentieth century

    Abstract: Martin Buber: His Intellectual and Scholarly Legacy is a collection of contemporary reflections on one of the most pivotal figures of modern Jewish thought. Born in Austria and reared in Galicia, Buber (1878-1965) became a spiritual representative of Judaism in German culture before emigrating to Jerusalem on the brink of the Shoah. His prolific writings on matters spanning the Hebrew Bible and New Testament to Hasidism and Zionism inspired diverse audiences throughout the world. In this volume, Sam Berrin Shonkoff has curated an illuminating array of essays on Buber’s thought by leading intellectuals from five different countries. Ausgehend von 40 qualitativen Interviews arbeitet er Unterschiede in den Routinen und Praktiken der Nachrichten- und Dokumentarfotografie heraus und rekonstruiert den Einfluss des israelischen Besatzungsregimes auf die Akteure und Strukturen des internationalen Fotojournalismus in der Region.

Seine Einflüsse auf die Philosophie und besonders die Medienwissenschaft sind unbestritten.Vilém Flussers außerordentliches, bewegtes Leben, das 1991 in einem Autounfall endet, ist zugleich ein Porträt des 20. Jahrhunderts in all seinen Widersprüchen. Aufgrund des breiten thematischen Spektrums von Vilém Flussers Werk ist die Biographie auch für Leser_innen jenseits der Philosophie und der Medientheorie von Interesse.
    Abstract: This biography - the first of its kind - is dedicated to the life and works of Vilém Flusser. Born as the son of Jewish parents in Prague in 1920, he flees from the Nazis, who murder his whole family in a concentration camp, via London to Brazil in 1939. In 1972 he returns to Europe, where he becomes famous in Germany as a "digital thinker"in the 1980s. His influence on philosophy, and particularly media science, are undisputed. Vilém Flusser's extraordinary and turbulent life, which ends in a fatal car crash in 1991, is also a portrait of the 20th Century with all its contradictions. Due to the wide thematic range of Vilém Flusser`s work, this biography is also interesting to readers of other subjects besides philosophy and media theory.

    Abstract: Im neunten Band der Reihe geht Ansgar Martins kabbalistischen Spuren in der Philosophie Theodor W. Adornos (1903–1969) nach. Der Frankfurter Gesellschaftskritiker griff im Rahmen seines radikalen materialistischen Projekts gleichwohl auch auf ‚theologische‘ Deutungsfiguren zurück. Vermittelt durch den gemeinsamen Freund Walter Benjamin (1892–1940) stieß Adorno dabei auf das Werk des Kabbala-Forschers Gershom Scholem (1897–1982). Zwischen Frankfurt und Jerusalem entwickelte sich eine lebenslange Korrespondenz. Für Adorno erscheint vor dem Hintergrund lückenloser kapitalistischer Vergesellschaftung jede religiöse Sinngebung in der Moderne als unmöglich. Der Tradition der jüdischen Mystik schreibt er hingegen eine innere Affinität zu dieser hoffnungslosen Logik des ‚Verfalls‘ zu. Sie scheint ihm zur unumgänglichen Säkularisierung religiöser Gehalte aufzufordern. Adornos kabbalistische Marginalien beziehen einen breiten Horizont jüdisch-messianischer Ideen ein. Er verleugnet dabei nie, dass es ihm um eine sehr diesseite Verwirklichung geoffenbarter Heilsversprechen zu tun ist: Transzendenz sei als erfüllte Immanenz, als verwirklichte Utopie zu denken. In diesem Anliegen sieht Adorno selbst jedoch gerade seine Übereinstimmung mit der Kabbala. Adornos kabbalistische Motive, die auf Scholems Forschungen zurückgehen, werden hier ausführlich an seinen Schriften und Vorlesungen untersucht. In seinem Verständnis der philosophischen Tradition sowie im Modell der Metaphysischen Erfahrung suchte er etwa explizit Anschluss an Deutungen der Kabbala: Das unerreichbare Urbild der Philosophie sei die Interpretation der geoffenbarten Schrift. Wie säkularisierte heilige Texte wurden Werke von Beethoven, Goethe, Kafka oder Schönberg so zum Anlass für ‚mystische‘ Interpretationen. Deren detaillierte Untersuchung erlaubt, das viel beschworene jüdische Erbe von Adornos Philosophie zu konkretisieren und bedenkenswerte Einzelheiten von der Negativen Dialektik zur Ästhetik in den Blick zu nehmen.

    Abstract: Das Buch erforscht die Beziehungsnetzwerke, die die Habima, eine in Moskau gegründete zionistische Theatergruppe, mit der kulturellen und wirtschaftlichen deutsch-jüdischen Elite in Berlin entwickelte. Die Habima ist vor allem durch ihre heroische Gründungsgeschichte als hebräische Theatergruppe aus Moskau bekannt. 1926 verließ die Habima die sowjetische Hauptstadt, verarmt, kurz vor der Auflösung. Bis 1931 tourte sie in Europa, in Mandatspalästina und in den USA. Berlin wurde vorübergehende Heimstätte der Truppe. Das Buch untersucht, wie sich Mitglieder der deutsch-jüdischen Elite in Berlin – Künstler, Theaterschaffende, zionistische Aktivisten, Intellektuelle, wohlhabende Kaufleute, Industrielle und Bankiers – zu einer Interessengemeinschaft für die Habima zusammenschlossen und die hebräisch-zionistische Theaterkultur gestalteten.
