    Abstract: Konrad Merz, 1908 als Kurt Lehmann in Berlin geboren, ist ein bisher kaum beachteter Exilschriftsteller jüdischer Herkunft. Nach seiner Flucht ins niederländische Exil erreicht er dort 1936 mit dem Roman Ein Mensch fällt aus Deutschland einen ersten Erfolg, den er aber unter der nationalsozialistischen Besatzung nicht fortführen kann. Die Jahre 1940 bis 1945 überlebt er versteckt. Erst ab 1972 tritt Merz – inzwischen hat er sich eine physiotherapeutische Karriere in den Niederlanden aufgebaut – mit grotesken Kurzgeschichten ›aus der Masseurspraxis‹ wieder literarisch in Erscheinung. Das autofiktional angelegte Nachkriegswerk ist dabei maßgeblich durch die Berufswahl geprägt: In einer ›Poetik der Körperlichkeit‹ fungiert der Körper als ›Übersetzungsinstrument‹ und Metapher der Erinnerung an psychische Traumatisierungen – zumeist begründet in den Erfahrungen des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Untersucht und literaturhistorisch eingeordnet werden die literarischen Strategien der grotesken Gestaltung von Körperlichkeit in Merz’ Œuvre. Zugleich wird die poetologische Bedeutung der dem Werk immanenten Parallelführung von Physiotherapie und Kunst – auch unter Rückgriff auf unveröffentlichte Texte und Nachlassdokumente – aufgeschlüsselt. Sucht Merz’ Literatur, geprägt von der Frage nach der Möglichkeit einer ›Literatur nach 1945‹, den adäquaten Umgang mit dem Erlebten, so will die vorliegende Publikation einen Beitrag leisten, den zu wenig gewürdigten Schriftsteller dem Publikum und der Kritik in Erinnerung zu rufen.

    Abstract: The Balkans provided the escape route for tens of thousands of German Jews, and remained a place of refuge until the Nazis brutally shut it off with the mass murder of Jewish refugees on the so-called Kladovo transport starting in September 1941, which can be considered as the beginning of the Holocaust in Europe. Responding to publications about the Western European and American exile experience of the Jews after 1933, this book offers comparative insights into the less trodden paths of the persecuted, illuminating the cultural and political context of the Balkan host countries, the response of local Jewish communities, and the reactions of common people and assorted criminals. The Balkans, often marginalised and loathed, emerges in hundreds of personal accounts of survivors gathered here, supplemented by extensive archival research, as a welcoming getaway, where thousands survived thanks to the Italian occupiers, illiterate peasants, and Communist-led Partisan resisters

Kay, der bereits fünf bedeutende Bücher über die Zeit des Nationalsozialismus veröffentlicht hat. Die Geschichte des Holocausts und die Ermordung ethnischer und sozialer Bevölkerungsgruppen. Hilberg, der sein Werk sein Leben lang ergänzt und aktualisiert hat, galt als der wohl beste Kenner der Quellen. "Die Vernichtung der euoropäischen Juden" ist zum Standardwerk geworden und hat Hilberg international bekannt gemacht. Die Neausugabe wurde auf Grundlage der letzten englischsprachigen Ausgabe erweitert. Mit einem Vorwort von René Schlott und einem Nachwort von Christian Seeger.

Die Spurensuche nach möglichen Verflechtungen mit der Eucharistie im Christentum führt zu der These, dass beide Rituale im selben Opferritus wurzeln. Inmitten der Spannungen der Spätantike gehen beide Gemeinden mit der biblischen Konzeption von Verheißung und Erfüllung unterschiedlich um und geben unterschiedliche Antworten auf Fragen ihrer Zeit.

    Abstract: Nationalsozialistische Bücherverbrennungen in Deutschland 1933 wurden im nationalsozialistischen Deutschland in konzertierten Aktionen hunderttausende Bücher missliebiger Autor:innen öffentlich verbrannt. Diese Bücherverbrennungen waren mehr als nur eine kulturpolitische Säuberungsaktion, sie waren zentraler Bestandteil im komplexen Gefüge des nationalsozialistischen Machtdurchsetzungsprozesses. Sie in ihrer Gesamtheit zu betrachten, hat sich das Projekt Verbrannte Orte zum Ziel gesetzt und mittlerweile über 160 Bücherverbrennungen dokumentiert: als Fotografien jener Orte, wie sie heute aussehen. Sie zeigen unspektakuläre Plätze der Alltäglichkeit, nur an wenigen weisen Erinnerungszeichen auf das Geschehene hin. Wie aber betrachten wir diese Orte, wenn wir wissen, was dort passiert ist? Eine Auswahl der Fotografien steht im Mittelpunkt des Buches. Ergänzt werden diese durch Texte, welche die Hintergründe der Bücherverbrennungen beleuchten. Einige Biografien betroffener Autor:innen werden vorgestellt und durch einen detaillierten Blick auf das Thema Exil begleitet. Außerdem wird erörtert, was die Bücherverbrennungen von 1933 mit Demokratie und Meinungsfreiheit von heute zu tun haben

    Abstract: "The Venice Ghetto was founded in 1516 by the Venetian government as a segregated area of the city in which Jews were compelled to live. The world's first ghetto and the origin of the English word, the term simultaneously works to mark specific places and their histories, and as a global symbol that evokes themes of identity, exile, marginalization, and segregation. To capture these multiple meanings, the editors of this volume conceptualize the ghetto as a "memory space that travels" through both time and space. This interdisciplinary collection engages with questions about the history, conditions, and lived experience of the Venice Ghetto, including its legacy as a compulsory, segregated, and enclosed space.     Abstract: "The Afterlife of the Shoah in Central and Eastern European Cultures is a collection of essays by literary scholars from Germany and Central Eastern Europe offering insight into the specific ways of representing the Shoah and its aftereffects as well as its entanglement with other catastrophic events in the region. Introducing the conceptual frame of postcatastrophe, the collected essays explore the discursive and artistic space the Shoah occupies in the countries between Moscow and Berlin. Postcatastrophe is informed by the knowledge of other concepts of "post" and shares their insight into forms of transmission and latency; in contrast to them, explores the after-effects of extreme events on a collective, aesthetic, and political rather than a personal level. The articles use the concept of postcatastrophe as a key to understanding the entangled and conflicted cultures of remembrance in postsocialist literatures and the arts dealing with events, phenomena and developments that refuse to remain in the past and still continue to shape perceptions of today's societies in Eastern Europe. As a contribution to memory studies as well as to literary criticism with a special focus on Shoah remembrance after socialism, this book is of great interest to students and scholars of European history, and those interested in historical memory more broadly"--

    Abstract: King David if one of the most central figures in all of the major monotheistic traditions. He generally connotes the heroic past of the (more imagined than real) ancient Israelite empire and is associated with messianic hopes for the future.     Abstract: Five centuries after the forced conversion of Spanish and Portuguese Jews to Catholicism, stories of these conversos' descendants uncovering long-hidden Jewish roots have come to light and taken hold of the literary and popular imagination. This seemingly remote history has inspired a wave of contemporary writing involving hidden artifacts, familial whispers and secrets, and clandestine Jewish ritual practices pointing to a past that had been presumed dead and buried. The Converso's Return explores the cultural politics and literary impact of this reawakened interest in converso and crypto-Jewish history, ancestry, and identity, and asks what this fascination with lost-and-found heritage can tell us about how we relate to and make use of the past. Dalia Kandiyoti offers nuanced interpretations of contemporary fictional and autobiographical texts about crypto-Jews in Cuba, Mexico, New Mexico, Spain, France, the Ottoman Empire, and Turkey. These works not only imagine what might be missing from the historical archive but also suggest an alternative historical consciousness that underscores uncommon convergences of and solidarities within Sephardi, Christian, Muslim, converso, and Sabbatean histories. Steeped in diaspora, Sephardi, transamerican, Iberian, and world literature studies, The Converso's Return illuminates how the converso narrative can enrich our understanding of history, genealogy, and collective memory

    Abstract: This book is an analysis of early Jewish thought on human nature, specifically, the complex of characteristics that are understood to be universally innate, and/or God-given, to collective humanity and the manner which they depict human existence in relationship, or lack thereof, to God. Jewish discourse in the Greco-Roman period (4th c. BCE until 1st c. CE) on human nature was not exclusively particularistic, although the immediate concern was often communal-specific. Evidence shows that many of these discussions were also an attempt to grasp a general, or universal, human nature. The focus of this work has been narrowed to three categories that encapsulate the most prevalent themes in Second Temple Jewish texts, namely, creation, composition, and condition.

    Abstract: Hilsenraths Shoah-Literatur hat von jeher provoziert – die rezeptionsästhetische Wirkung bezieht ihre Sprengkraft zum großen Teil aus der Einbindung von Sexualität. Erstmals beschäftigt sich nun eine literaturwissenschaftliche Arbeit mit der Funktion der tabubehafteten, bisweilen als pornografisch diskreditierten Verschränkung von Sexualität und Shoah. Zunächst werden Hilsenraths Werke eingebettet in den Kontext einer Shoah-Literatur, welche ebenfalls Sexualität auf sprachlicher und narrativer Ebene nutzt. Zweitens erfolgt eine Betrachtung der Werke unter dezidiert genderorientierter Perspektive. Drittens wird die Korrelation von Sexualität und Shoah analysiert, um die stete Funktionsgebundenheit der Sexualität aufzuzeigen: So dient diese beispielsweise dazu, Macht- und Gewaltverhältnisse zu zementieren oder die Versehrtheit der Figuren herauszustellen. Hilsenrath’s literature of the Shoah has always been provocative – the reception-aesthetic effect can be mostly referred to the involvement of sexuality. For the first time, an academic paper focuses on the function of this tabooed and even pornographic discredited connection between sexuality and Shoah. Firstly, Hilsenrath’s works are situated in the context of the literature of the Shoah which also makes use of sexuality on a linguistic and narrative level. Secondly, the works are being analysed under a decided gender-oriented perspective. Thirdly, the correlation of sexuality and Shoah are being analysed in order to show the consistent function of sexuality. Thus, sexuality serves to foster power and violence or to depict the vulnerability of the protagonists.

    Abstract: "The Converso's Return is a study of recent fiction and memoirs by U.S. Latinx, Spanish, French, and Turkish authors about the current revival of Iberian Jewish history, in particular, the largely forced conversions of Jews to Catholicism in fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Spain and Portugal. This seemingly remote history has been the topic of a substantial library of contemporary literary and popular writing, especially since the 1992 quincentennial commemorations of the 1492 conversions and expulsion of Jews and Muslims from Spain and the conquest of the Americas. The recent claiming of Sephardi converso ancestry by Christian (and to a much lesser extent Muslim) descendants in the Americas, Europe, and Turkey has taken place simultaneously with the fictional and testimonial writing about conversos and their descendants by authors on several continents. What is it about conversos that has sparked their imagination? What do we learn and rethink about conversions' afterlives including their resurgence in the present, and how does this help us understand how and why we return to and resuscitate the past? The literary writing in English, Spanish, French, and Turkish about the fate of the converts through the centuries that The Converso's Return investigates together help us complicate ideas about conversos, contemporary historical consciousness, the role of genealogy in culture, collective memory, missing/imagined archives, Sephardi identities, and world literature"--

    Abstract: Der „Ewige Jude“ stand auf dem Index der verbotenen Bücher – das lässt aufhorchen: Kämpfte die katholische Kirche so gegen antisemitische Stereotype? Dieser Frage geht der Autor anhand der Verfahren gegen die französischen Autoren Edgar Quinet und Eugène Sue nach, die das Motiv des Ewigen Juden im 19. Jahrhundert neu interpretierten. Der detaillierte Einblick in den Alltag der Zensoren ist entlarvend: In den Archiven der Inquisition und der Indexkongregation sind irreführende Gutachten zu finden, die für ihre Verfasser nur noch Mittel zu dem Zweck waren, sich in den revolutionären Kämpfen ihrer Zeit richtig zu positionieren. Mitarbeiter der zuständigen Kongregationen waren völlig überfordert, und Bücher wurden sogar ohne vorherige Lektüre verboten.     Abstract: Cartoons uniting visual representation with cultural associations, can cause devastation. One picture may save a thousand words but we will never know how many hundreds of thousands of lives were not saved, how many millions of lives were not even lived, because of the climate of fear and of hate prompted and promoted by the anti-Semitic pictures of Satanic horned Jews. From the 12th to the 21st century, these cartoons, simplifying and intensifying fears and hatreds, were powerful tools in the spread of anti-Semitism. These images first appeared in medieval Christianity, reappeared in 19th and 20th century Racialism, Fascism and Marxism and today are part of the visual images of contemporary Islam; four absolutely different belief systems with different life cycles all sharing the exact same indelible meme with its exact same visual expression targeting the exact same expiatory victim. For a thousand years, the power of this fabrication has erased existential realities and, with devastating consequences, the fear generated by the image of the demonised Jew has been reflected onto the real Jew.     Abstract: In this pathbreaking study of responses to the Holocaust in wartime and postwar Polish literature, Rachel Feldhay Brenner explores seven writers' compulsive need to share their traumatic experience of witness with the world. The Holocaust put the ideological convictions of Kornel Filipowicz, Józef Mackiewicz, Tadeusz Borowski, Zofia Kossak, Leopold Buczkowski, Jerzy Andrzejewski, and Stefan Otwinowski to the ultimate test. Tragically, witnessing the horror of the Holocaust implied complicity with the perpetrator and produced an existential crisis that these writers, who were all exempted from the genocide thanks to their non-Jewish identities, struggled to resolve in literary form. Polish Literature and the Holocaust: Eyewitness Testimonies,1942-1947 is a particularly timely book in view of the continuing debates about the attitudes of Poles toward the Jews during the war. The literary voices from the past that Brenner examines posit questions that are as pertinent now as they were then.     Abstract: Over the last decades, studies on cultural memory have taken a 'spectral turn'. They have explored the potential of haunting metaphors for addressing past instances of violence that affect present cultural realities. Zuzanna Dziuban contributes to the discussions on the figure of the ghost by enquiring into its culturally and historically located modality: the emergence of Jewish ghosts in contemporary Polish popular culture, literature and critical art. Locating this new interest in Jewish ghosts on the map of other Polish (and Jewish) ghostologies, this study seeks to explore the cultural and political functions of post-Holocaust haunted imaginaire.

    Abstract: In A Hundred Acres of America: The Geography of Jewish American Literary History, Michael Hoberman introduces cultural geography as an alternative approach to the immigrant model. Cultural geography allows Hoberman to restore Jewish American writers to their roles as important, active members of the American literary landscape from the 1850s to the present, and to argue that Jewish history, American literary history, and the inhabitation of American geography are, and always have been, contiguous entities. A Hundred Acres of America makes its case by investigating both canonical and extra-canonical literary depictions of six geographies: the frontier, the small town, the urban, the suburban, America as seen from Europe, and Israel as seen from America. Hoberman reads dozens of representative texts closely, and analyzes a wide range of authors, from frontier-era memoirists and turn-of-the-century native-born reformers to contemporary novelists. He adroitly demonstrates that Jewish American authors are not only present throughout American literary history, but actively shaped this history with writings that often subverted or contradicted the ways their non-Jewish peers depicted these geographies"--

    Abstract: Die vielfältigen Transformationen der Bibel in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart werden exemplarisch an jüdischen und christlichen Transformationen der Davidfigur und des Opfermotivs diskutiert. Die Autorinnen und Autoren dieses Bandes verstehen biblische Transformationen als Veränderungsprozesse von Referenzbereich und Aufnahmebereich, die in der Bibel selbst beginnen. Die im Anschluss an Untersuchungen innerbiblischer Transformationsprozesse behandelten literarischen, musikalischen und (religions-)didaktischen Transformationen von Davidfigur und Opfermotiv reichen vom Hochmittelalter bis in die Gegenwart und berücksichtigen Texte und Musikstücke jüdischer wie christlicher Provenienz. Gerade die Spannung zwischen zwei Narrationen mit anscheinend nur wenig Gemeinsamkeiten ermöglicht einen Blick auf die Unterschiede von Transformationsprozessen biblischer Figuren und Motive
