Abstract:
Criticizes the Christian view, based on Romans 11:25, according to which the Jewish refusal to recognize Jesus as the Messiah connotes impenitence, stubbornness, and hardness of the heart. Examines the etymological development and meaning of these terms. States that in Luther's interpretation, the emphasis is on "malevolent obstinacy". Suggests the use of a less pejorative formula, such as "non-perception", which could include non-perception on the part of Christians in reference to the Jewish people.
