Abstract:
The Easter sermon by Melito of Sardis, the 2nd century bishop, who celebrated Easter on the Jewish Passover, is one of the oldest documents relating to Christian history. Its content was later interpreted as Melito having compared the sacrifice of Jesus with the Paschal lamb. Melito's assertion that the Jews murdered Jesus was absorbed into the liturgy of Eastern and Western Churches and gave rise to the Christians' anti-Jewish theology. In its original context, the sermon was not directed solely against Jews; it was delivered to an Early Christian community which was still dominated by local Jews.
