Abstract:
Contends that there has been an effort on the part of popes and other Catholic leaders to Christianize the Holocaust, beginning with Pius XII, who stated in 1945 that the Church did not collaborate with the Nazis and was victimized by them. In 1971 John Paul II, then Archbishop of Kraków, called Auschwitz "the world's Golgotha", stressed the martyrdom of the convert Edith Stein and the priest Maximilian Kolbe, and claimed there should be a shrine at Auschwitz for them. Discusses the ensuing debates over the crosses at Auschwitz in 1979 and the monastery at the site in 1984. In 2006, at Auschwitz, Benedict XVI stated that, through the Holocaust, the Nazis tried to destroy the roots of Christianity. Insists that Jews must oppose the Christianization of the Holocaust, as well as efforts of the Vatican to declare Pius XII a saint. Contends that dialogue with the Vatican is useless, unless there is a change in its attitude.
