Abstract:
Contends that Czech authorities, both before and after the Soviet takeover in 1948, supported the establishment of Israel and even helped the new state by sending arms, only in order to help the Jews emigrate and solve their own "Jewish problem". At the same time, they persecuted Czech Jews, as evidenced by the antisemitic and anti-Zionist trial held in Prague in 1952. The purpose of the trial was to purge the communist leadership of Jews, many of whom had taken part in the arms deals with Israel. Notes that the USSR had begun meanwhile to support the Arabs in the Middle East, since Israel was receiving aid from the U.S. At the trial, Rudolf Slánský, Secretary General of the Communist Party, and 13 others were accused of treason. Slánský and the other ten Jewish defendants were sentenced to death and executed, while the three non-Jewish defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment.
