Abstract:
In January 1940, Andrzej Kott escaped from the German prison in Warsaw. He was the head of a clandestine young people's association called the Polish People's Independent Action. In retaliation, and because Kott was of Jewish descent (his forebears had converted to Catholicism), the Gestapo arrested 255 Jews and held them as hostages. All the arrested Jews were shot.
