Abstract:
Surveys Polish Holocaust historiography from 1944, revealing how Polish historians have tended to accept the image of Poles as Nazi victims exclusively while denying their role as victimizers of the Jews. Surveys many Holocaust-related publications, especially by Jews. Notes the effects of the pre-communist, communist, and post-communist periods on Holocaust historiography. Discusses Jan T. Gross's book book "Neighbors" and the response to its challenge to the dominant Polish image, which has minimized Polish responsibility (including collaboration) during the Holocaust while focusing on Polish rescuers.
