Abstract: In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that's been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of e coli--the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults. Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield Farm's Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms' Joel Salatin, Food, Inc. reveals surprising -- and often shocking truths -- about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here.

Abstract: This documentary, sponsored by the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, chronicles the history of the garment workers from 1900 to 1964. Opening with the flood of immigrants that poured through Ellis Island in the early 1900s, the film goes on to unveil dim Lower East Side sweatshops, coal mines and textile mills filled with children, the battlefields of World War I, and the anxious years of the Depression. In this setting we see the immigrants struggle to become part of their new country and labor's brutal battle to organize into a united movement during the 1930s. Actual footage of the Memorial Day Massacre at Republic Steel brings the power of authenticity to these scenes. The film moves through World War II and the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, as each generation fights to preserve and expand its freedom.

Ausgerechnet jetzt kündigen Scarlets Eltern ihren Besuch an.

Abstract: Hanus Hachenburg was a prodigal poet and writer in wartime Czechoslovakia. In 1943, while a thirteen year old prisoner in Theresienstadt (Terezin) concentration camp, he wrote a puppet play, 'We are Looking for a Monster', but it was never performed. Hanus was born in Prague on 12 July 1929. He is described as a thin, timid, brilliant boy who wrote poetry daily. He began writing while still at school. Hanus attended the Yachymova Ulitze (Jewish School) in Prague. When the Munich Accord was instituted in 1938 and Jewish movement was severely restricted, his mother moved nine-year old Hanus into the Jewish Orphanage in Prague, with hopes for a better life for him. He lived in the Belgicka Orphanage for five years before being deported to Terezin, an ante-chamber to Auschwitz. His short life ended in the Family-Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau on 12 July 1944, the day he turned fifteen.

The Islamic authorities of the town are eager to close it because consumption of alcohol is prohibited to the Muslims, but they cannot do anything since the city is inhabited by a Jewish community. As long as there are customers who are allowed to consume alcohol, Mustapha is free to go on with his business. But when the Jews of Morocco are starting to immigrate to the new state of Israel, and that the town is emptied of its Jewish community, Mustapha is terrorized about having to close his business. Abstract: Robin Hirsch's "Kinderszenen - Scenes from Childhood" is a one-man show and part I of the seven-part performance "Mosaic: Fragments of a Jewish life", adapted from his highly acclaimed memoir "Last Dance at the Hotel Kempinski". With humor and insight, rage and compassion, it paints the portrait of a family, an era, a civilization decimated, deracinated and scattered across the earth - gathering up fragments of a life which was once whole, and piecing together a new one. Accompanied by the music of Kurt Weill and Mischa Spoliansky, "Kinderszenen" begins with the conjectured meeting of Hirsch's parents at a costume ball in Berlin under Hitler's shadow, and ends with the hard-won celebration of their silver wedding anniversary on the island of Mallorca. In between are scenes from a complicated coming-of-age as the son of German Jews in postwar Britain and a very English education, including brief appearances by Her Majesty the Queen, His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh and Field Marshall Viscount Bernard Montgomery of El Alamein.

Abstract: The film unites three powerful elements. Central are classic black and white portraits of survivors, created by photographer/filmmaker Evvy Eisen. Survivors' stories are told in sections: Destruction and Loss, Lives Rebuilt and Reflections. Their emotion filled voices recount memories of the separation from family, the horror of the cattle car journey, the selection where it was decided if they were fit to work or condemned to die. A haunting solo piano score composed and performed by Nicole Milner, a survivor, unites the visual and spoken threads. This blending of original narrative, photographs, and music portray memorable images of human courage, stamina and creativity born of the most desperate circumstances. The film's historical as well topical implications make it relevant in a wide variety of community settings and schools where it has an especially strong resonance with student viewers.

Abstract: During the late 1920s, many impoverished Jews searching for a better life made their way to Birobidzhan, the Soviet Jewish Autonomous Region on the Chinese border. This melodrama tells the story of a Jewish family's immigration to Birobidzhan and their experiences as settlers on a collective farm in the area. While the family encounters hardships in adjusting to this new way of life (including son-in-law Pinya's greedy, misguided search for gold) their search for assimilation is ultimately shown as positive. While the film is essentially a Soviet propaganda piece emphasizing the utopian dream of Birobidzhan as a socialist Jewish homeland, the reality of the area was harsh and inhospitable.

Abstract: In 1941, a group of the Soviet Union's most prominent Jewish writers and artists signed an appeal to Jews throughout the world, asking them to join the Soviet people "in the holy war against Fascism ... to destroy the enemy of humanity and of the Jewish people." The group included actor Solomon Mikhoels, poet Peretz Markish and film director Sergei Eisenstein. This newsreel footage captures their eloquent, impassioned appeals. Tragically, Mikhoels and Markish later fell victim to the Stalinist purges in the 1940s and '50s (Eisenstein died of natural causes in the 1940s.) This film stands as an important record of how the Soviet government relaxed its ethnic policies in order to appeal to anyone who could help fight fascism and the Nazis.

Abstract: For the last 60 years, the term "Jewish boxer" has been an oxymoron. But Dmitriy Salita, a 25 year-old Russian immigrant is making history as a top professional boxer and a rigorously observant Jew. While providing an intimate, 3-year long look at the trials and tribulations faced by an up and coming professional boxer, ORTHODOX STANCE is a portrait of seemingly incompatible cultures and characters--boxing promoters, trainers and Orthodox Rabbis--working together to support Dmitriy's rare and remarkable devotion to both Orthodox Judaism and the pursuit of a professional boxing title. In the end, the film is about more than just boxing and religion, but a young man's search for meaning in life. At a time when religion increasingly divides and destroys, Orthodox Stance presents a unique, yet universal, story that provides an example for Jews and non-Jews of the positive effects of faith, tolerance, diversity and pluralism - the things people talk about when they talk about the greatness of America.

Abstract: SHOAH und PIN-UPS erzählt von einem Tabubruch, den der 80jährige New-Yorker NO!-Artist Boris Lurie begeht. NO! zur bürgerlichen Wohlanständigkeit! NO! zur erwarteten Opfermentalität.

Abstract: Reboot Stereophonic, the acclaimed non-profit record label committed to exhuming lost music from America's attics, is proud to announce the release of its latest album exploring pop's buried roots, JEWFACE. The world's first and only anthology of Jewish minstrel songs, JEWFACE includes "COHEN OWES ME 97 DOLLARS", "UNDER THE MATZOS TREE", "I'M A YIDDISH COWBOY" and other long lost hits that took vaudeville stages by storm at the turn of the 20th century. JEWFACE features 16 ultra-rare recordings, unheard for nearly a century. Recorded between 1903-1924, the songs were composed by legendary tunesmiths including Irving Berlin and Gus Kahn and performed by Fanny Brice, Billy Murray, and other vaudeville greats.Revisiting pop's true old school, JEWFACE reveals one of the dirty little secrets of American culture: some of the first hit records ever made were fiendishly catchy musical lampoons, created by Jews, for Jews, packed with stereotypes straight out of the anti-Semite's playbook. The disc JEWFACE was curated by writer Jody Rosen, music critic for Slate magazine and the author of the celebrated White Christmas: The Story of an American Song. Rosen spent more than a dozen years traveling the country to hunt down the original wax cylinder and 78 disc recordings which were then re-mastered.

Abstract: Directed by Lodz native Aleksander Ford and financed by the Jewish Labor movement in Poland, Children Must Laugh is one of the few surviving documentaries about Jewish life in Poland before WWII. This institutional film was produced to raise funds for the Vladimir Medem Sanitarium which, noted for its modern and spacious facilities, stood as the embodiment of health and enlightenment, in striking contrast to the grim images of urban Polish-Jewish poverty. The sanitarium's theme song, "Mir Kumen On (Here We Come)," punctuates the film with a sense of hope and accomplishment. The Bund's optimistic internationalism, exemplified by the children's endearing performances, permeates the film, creating powerful yet unintended ironies for post-Holocaust audiences.

Abstract: Spectacular rare archival film footage of Palestine in the tumultuous 1920s forms the heart of this documentary by Israeli filmmaker and scholar Ya'akov Gross. Considered lost for more than 70 years, these early films taken by Ya'akov Ben Dov, the father of Hebrew cinema, depict settlements and activities in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Rishon le Zion and Old Jaffa; visits by Albert Einstein and Winston Churchill; the funeral of Eliezer Ben-Yehuda; and early Zionists who pioneered the Third and Fourth Aliyahs. A vital and accessible look at a formative period in Israeli history. Dreamers and Builders includes material from three rare films by Ya'akov Ben Dov: Return to Zion (1920-21), The Rebirth of a Nation (1923), and Romance of Palestine (1926) - preserved in a joint project by the National Center for Jewish Film and the Israel Film Archive.

Abstract: Based on the short stories of Anzia Yezierska, the first writer to bring stories of American Jewish women to a mainstream audience, Hungry Hearts focuses on the members of the Levin family who emigrate from Eastern Europe to New York City's Lower East Side. Abraham, the pious father learned in religion but uninterested in business, has difficulty making a living and adjusting to life in America. The daughter Sara scrubs floors in the tenement in order to earn money and "become a somebody." The mother Hannah, a noble matriarch, scrimps and saves to paint her dingy kitchen white only to have her landlord raise the rent because of the improvements. Filmed on location on the Lower East Side, this bittersweet classic captures the hopes and hardships of Jewish immigrants in the New World.

Abstract: A gripping documentary about the courage and determination of a young English stockbroker who saved the lives of 669 children. Between March 13 and August 2, 1939, Nicholas Winton organized eight transports (one airplane and seven trains) to take children from Prague to new homes in Great Britain, and kept quiet about it until his wife discovered a scrapbook documenting his unique mission in 1988. Winton was a successful 29-year-old stockbroker in London who "had an intuition" about the fate of the Jews when he visited Prague in 1939. He quietly but decisively got down to the business of saving lives. We learn how only two countries, Sweden and Britain, answered his call to harbour the young refugees; how documents had to be forged ("We didn't bring anybody in illegally, we just, er, speeded up the process a little") and how once foster parents signed for the children on delivery that was the last he saw of them. "You had to treat it like a business," says Winton. Journalist and presenter Joe Schlesinger, a rescued child himself, describes Winton as a man of "ordinary human decency". He has also become a national hero in Prague and in Britain and his good work ripples through the lives of many.

Abstract: Norman Salsitz wurde vor 84 Jahren als Naftali Saleschütz geboren.

Abstract: An enormously riveting and inspirational tale of World War II and the Holocaust, "Partisans of Vilna" chronicles the amazing endeavors of the Jewish resistance fighters. Co-written by director Josh Waletzky (Image Before My Eyes) and producer Aviva Kempner (The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg), "Partisans of Vilna" skillfully blends songs, newsreels and archival footage with interviews of over forty Holocaust survivors to paint an eye-opening portrait of the courageous Jewish resistance in Vilna, the capital of Lithuania. Recounting how a commando unit was formed under tremendous risk to conduct sabotage missions against the Nazis, the film explores the moral dilemmas facing the Jewish youth who organized an underground resistance in the Vilna ghetto, and fought as partisans in the woods against the Third Reich. More than just a record of great historical importance, "Partisans of Vilna" is an intensely stirring and uplifting commemoration of heroes during the darkest of times. Abstract: Februar 2002.
