Abstract:
Examines some of the many biographical works on rabbis and Jewish scholars which appeared in periodicals or in book form, mainly in Germany, between 1780-1871. The writers were generally rabbis or prominent Jewish scholars themselves. They depicted the lives of rabbis and scholars known from the Talmud, rabbis in the Middle Ages (especially Saadya Gaon, Rashi, and Maimonides), and rabbis in the early modern period - for instance, in Amsterdam, Italy, or Germany. Discusses the lives and works of the scholars who wrote these biographical accounts, and the reception of their works in the 18th-19th centuries.
