Abstract:
States that the symbolic memorials of the immediate postwar years have given way since the 1980s to memorial sites which combine the functions of museums, repositories of documents and oral history, and educational centers. These serve the needs of a new generation which must have information before it can take part in commemoration. Commemoration is now less a ritual for politicians and more an activity of local historians, schoolchildren, and ordinary citizens, who use these centers to explore the past and draw lessons for the present. Discusses programs at a number of centers in North-Rhine Westphalia.
