Als Rabbinerin - sie amtiert in Paris - ist Delphine Horvilleur (zuletzt "Überlegungen zur Frage des Antisemitismus") immer wieder mit dem Tod konfrontiert, steht Trauernden bei, beerdigt die Toten. Sie erzählt Geschichten vom Leben und Tod, von den Menschen, die sie bestattet hat, wie die Psychoanalytikerin und Autorin Elsa Cayat, die beim Terroranschlag auf Charlie Hebdo ermordet wurde, oder Marceline, die sich als "Mädchen von Birkenau" beschrieb, aber auch von den Hinterbliebenen, denen sie etwas mitgeben möchte, wie dem kleinen Jungen, der seinen Bruder verloren hat oder dem Sohn, der das Schicksal seiner Mutter, einer Holocaustüberlebenden, verstehen will. Ihre Geschichten handeln vom Tod, aber auch vom Leben. Sie nähert sich diesem grossem Thema auf sehr persönliche Weise an, lässt auch ihre eigenen Erfahrungen mit dem Tod einfliessen, und bezieht sich immer wieder auf biblische Geschichten, jüdische Traditionen und jüdisches Denken. Ein in klarer, schöner Sprache geschriebenes Buch
