Abstract:
Gives excerpts from the writings of Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, 19th century leader of Orthodox German Jewry, in which he points to the fallacies in Christian theology, the persecution of Jews during the Middle Ages (particularly the Crusades), and to Jewish heroism. His purpose in these works, written in German, was mainly to remind German Jews that their ancestors opted for martyrdom rather than desecration of their religion, unlike contemporaries who opted for assimilation or conversion. Although Rabbi Hirsch was optimistic regarding 19th century enlightened attitudes toward Jews, he warned them to be wary of the possibility of recurring antisemitism. His translations of several medieval Hebrew poems recounting persecution of the Jews aroused criticism by fellow Jews who feared Christian repercussions.
