Abstract:
Discusses Ephraim ben Jacob of Bonn's list of eleven antisemitic events which occurred between 1171-96 in various locations in Europe (mainly in Germany, but also in France, England, and Austria). The main source of danger to Jews was popular agitation linked to the Crusades. A menacing sense of Jewish malevolence developed toward the end of the 12th century, with belief in ritual murder as one example of the view that Jews sought to kill Christians. Ephraim's material shows that this perception of Jews played a dominant role in the eruption of anti-Jewish violence. What stands out in some of the events depicted was the local regime's support for the Jews, but the lack of support in other cases suggests the beginning of serious deterioration in the fortunes of early Ashkenazic Jewry. This first collection of materials about different incidents is unified by the themes of danger to and persecution of a number of related Jewish communities.
