Abstract:
Religiöse, Politik und öffentliches Leben bestimmende Konflikte in Israel beschäftigen zunehmend das außerisraelische Judentum und irritieren weltweit die nichtjüdische Öffentlichkeit. Zwei jüdische Autoren unterschiedlicher Generationen versuchen, solchen Irritationen mit sachlicher Information zu begegnen: T. Much, 1942 in Tel Aviv geboren, Dermatologe in Wien, hat dort vor 10 Jahren die erste liberale Gemeinde mitbegründet ("Judentum, wie es wirklich ist", BA 12/97); K. Pfeiffer, 1928 in Österreich geboren, 1943 nach Palästina geflüchtet, im Kibbuz erzogen. Sie fragen nach Zusammenhängen von politischen Fanatismus und religiösem Fundamentalismus, nach deren Bedeutung für das pluralistische Judentum weltweit, nach Konfliktlinien zwischen orthodoxem und nichtorthodoxem Judentum und den Hintergründen der zum Teil sich gewaltsam äußernden religiösen Auseinandersetzungen.
