Abstract:
In 1449, the first "purity of blood" statute, prohibiting the access of Conversos to public office, was sanctioned in the city of Toledo. During the second half of the 15th century and the 16th century, the statutes spread throughout Spanish society, affecting many institutions, including the Church. Initially, the popes opposed the statutes, especially inside the Church; they disagreed with any kind of discrimination against New Christians. At the beginning of the 16th century, Pope Julius II condemned the statutes explicitly. However, with the passing of time, the popes were more willing to compromise due to pressure exercised in favor of the statutes by the Spanish Church and other institutions. In 1548, Pope Paul III approved the "purity of blood" statute instated by the Cathedral of Toledo. The principle of "purity of blood" then prevailed progressively in all aspects of Spanish society and in the Church.
