    Abstract: This collection of articles is tightly focused on metaphors in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible and their later afterlife in Jewish and Christian texts. The essays deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, several contributions employ metaphor theory in analysing the biblical texts, both conceptual frameworks such as blending theory and more traditional methods. Second, metaphors are studied both synchronically, that is, in relation to their current literary contexts, and diachronically, that is, mapping how they have been employed and re-interpreted in different ways and different texts throughout time. Third, other contributions read metaphors in light of theoretical frameworks such as feminist criticism, post-colonial theories, or power discourses that uncover aspects of significance often missed in historical studies. Finally, yet other contributions deal with the issue of how to translate metaphors in contemporary contexts

    Abstract: Nach dem Zivilisationsbruch" Auschwitz hatten alle Versuche, sich in deutscher Sprache dieser lange tabuisierten Vergangenheit zu stellen, gegen Vorbehalte und Misstrauen zu kämpfen, und sie mussten zuerst ihre Form finden, die das Unsagbare doch auszudrücken erlaubte. Dass es unmöglich sei, über Auschwitz zu sprechen, und doch genau das bis heute unermüdlich zu tun sei, ist eine noch immer aktuelle Forderung. Forschungsarbeiten zu den Versuchen, sich mit der Shoah literarisch zu befassen, gibt es inzwischen in großer Zahl, und das entstandene recht differenzierte Bild vermag deutlich die historischen, ästhetischen und politischen Akzente in der sehr komplexen deutschsprachigen Shoah-Literatur nachzuzeichnen. Die literarische Auseinandersetzung (und erst recht die historische) sowie die Diskussion darüber sind aber kein Phänomen einer nun abgeschlossenen Vergangenheit. Die literarische Auseinandersetzung mit Auschwitz ist weiterhin Thema deutschsprachiger Literatur

    Abstract: "The international conference "Psalms in Rituals from Antiquity to the Present," held on October 24-26, 2018, at the Max-Weber Kolleg in the University of Erfurt, Germany, aimed to showcase and also to build upon recent developments in what has become a very exciting field, bringing to it the distinctive perspective of the Research Centre "Dynamics of Jewish Ritual Practices in Pluralistic Contexts from Antiquity to the Present," which hosted the event. The Research Centre, which was funded from 2015 to 2020 by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF), investigated the dynamic relationship of rituals in pluralistic contexts and specifically in Jewish and Christian religious traditions. While religious institutions often focus on tradition, invariability, and rootedness in history, the Research Centre has found and studied numerous examples of innovation and change in regard to religious ritual practices. Das Buch plädiert für eine einheitliche exegetische Tradition in Alexandrien, welche beide Gestalten der Tora – die griechische und die hebräische – berücksichtigt
    Abstract: The translation of the Torah into Greek in Alexandria is an intriguing puzzle. Why was it undertaken at all? Was it a need of the Alexandrian Jews? Or did the Jewish wisdom intrigue the Egyptian ruler? Is the legend of the miraculous creation of the Septuagint a manifesto of cultural assimilation into the Hellenic culture? Does the Alexandrian Greek biblical exegesis, especially that of Philo, aim to break with the Hebrew tradition? According to this book, Philo, although not fluent in Hebrew himself, moves in the same shared Hebrew-Greek Torah universe that a closer look on the Septuagint legend reveals as well. Die Übersetzung der Tora ins Griechische in Alexandrien ist ein intrigierendes Rätsel. Warum wurde sie überhaupt unternommen? War sie ein Bedürfnis der alexandrinischen Juden? Oder machte die jüdische Weisheit den ägyptischen Herrscher neugierig? Ist die Legende über die wundersame Entstehung der Septuaginta ein Manifest der kulturellen Assimilation an die hellenische Kultur?     Abstract: Der Kommentar versteht Jer 1-25 als dramatischen Text: In Klagen, Anklagen und Unheilsankündigungen ergeht darin eine vielstimmige Botschaft vom Untergang Jerusalems und Judas. Entsprechend dem Format der Reihe wird der hebräische Text zunächst synchron im Blick auf Rhetorik, Gattung, sprachliche Phänomene, Motivik und theologische Aussagen analysiert. Vor dem Hintergrund der politischen Situation Judas seit Ende des siebten Jahrhunderts v. Chr. versucht die diachrone Analyse, die Entstehung des Textes zu rekonstruieren. Ausgangspunkt dafür ist dessen ältere, in der griechischen Überlieferung bewahrte Fassung. Die bilderreichen und mitunter verstörenden Texte, die den Untergang des Königreiches Juda in Szene setzen, interpretiert Maier für zeitgenössische Leserinnen und Leser mit Hilfe neuerer hermeneutischer Perspektiven wie der feministischen Bibelauslegung, der postkolonialen Theorie und der Traumaforschung. Dabei wird deutlich, wie das Jeremiabuch ein kulturelles Trauma zu bearbeiten sucht und angesichts von Krieg, Hunger und Vertreibung um ein Gottesbild ringt, das geeignet ist, die Geschichte zu verstehen und zugleich Hoffnung auf eine bessere Zukunft zu vermitteln. Die weibliche Personifikation Jerusalems bietet ein emotionales und Mitleid heischendes Porträt des Volkes, das die Erfahrungen von Kriegsgewalt und Zerstörung zur Sprache bringt. Der wegen seiner Unheilsbotschaft verfolgte Jeremia ringt stellvertretend für das Volk mit Gott.

    Abstract: "This volume both reflects on the contested nature of the Wisdom Literature category and takes advantage of the opportunities it presents for reconsidering the concept of wisdom more independently from it. The first half explores wisdom as a concept, with essays on its relationship to skill, epistemology, virtue, theology, and order in the Hebrew Bible, its meaning in related cultures, from Egypt and Mesopotamia to Patristic and Rabbinic interpretation, and, finally, its continuing relevance the modern world, including in Islamic, Jewish, and Christian thought, and from feminist, environmental, and other contextual perspectives. The latter half considers "Wisdom Literature" as a category. Scholars address its relation to the Solomonic Collection, its social setting, literary genres, chronological development, and theology. Wisdom Literature's relation to other biblical literature (law, history, prophecy, apocalyptic, and the broad question of "Wisdom influence") is then discussed before separate chapters on the texts commonly associated with the category. Contributors take a variety of approaches to the current debates surrounding the viability and value of the Wisdom Literature category and its proper relationship to the concept of wisdom in the Hebrew Bible. Though the organization of the volume highlights the independence of wisdom as concept from "Wisdom Literature" as category, seeking to counter the lack of attention given to this question in the traditional approach, the inclusion of both topics together in the same volume reflects their continued interconnection. As such, this handbook both represents the current state of Wisdom scholarship and sets the stage for future developments"--

That fact creates specific challenges to modern interpreters of gender roles in the ancient world, especially once contemporary understandings of gender as construction and performance are embraced. So wird hier ein Stück alttestamentlicher Theologiegeschichte sichtbar, der es nicht in erster Linie um die Aussage der einzelnen, individuellen Prophetengestalt ging, sondern vor allem um das allgemeine Zeugnis vom Sprechen und Handeln JHWHs in der Geschichte seines Volkes.     Abstract: "Comics and Sacred Texts explores how comics and notions of the sacred interweave new modes of seeing and understanding the sacral. Comics and graphic narratives help readers see religion in the everyday and in depictions of God, in transfigured, heroic selves as much as in the lives of saints and the meters of holy languages. Coeditors Ken Koltun-Fromm and Assaf Gamzou reveal the graphic character of sacred narratives, imagining new vistas for both comics and religious texts. In both visual and linguistic forms, graphic narratives reveal representational strategies to encounter the sacred in all its ambivalence. Through close readings and critical inquiry, these essays contemplate the intersections between religion and comics in ways that critically expand our ability to think about religious landscapes, rhetorical practices, pictorial representation, and the everyday experiences of the uncanny. Organized into four sections--Seeing the Sacred in Comics; Reimagining Sacred Texts through Comics; Transfigured Comic Selves, Monsters, and the Body; and The Everyday Sacred in Comics--the essays explore comics and graphic novels ranging from Craig Thompson's Habibi and Marvel's X-Men and Captain America to graphic adaptions of religious texts such as 1 Samuel and the Gospel of Mark. Dazu führt er in den Stand der archäologischen und historischen Forschung ein und bezieht die Ergebnisse kritisch auf die biblische Darstellung. So entsteht ein Bild der Geschichte des antiken Israel im Kontext der südlichen Levante, das manches Mal vertraut, oft aber auch frisch und unerwartet daherkommt. Für die Neuauflage wurden zahlreiche Abschnitte überarbeitet und neueste Literatur ergänzt. Der Charakter als Studienbuch wurde noch einmal methodisch reflektiert und verstärkt.

    Abstract: The present volume of proceedings offers cutting-edge research on the Hebrew language in the late Persian, Hellenistic and Roman periods. Fourteen specialists of ancient Hebrew illuminate various aspects of the language, from phonology through grammar and syntax to semantics and interpretation. The research furthers the exegesis of biblical and non-biblical texts, it helps determine the chronological outline of Hebrew literature, and contributes to a better understanding of the sociolinguistic aspects of the language in the period of the Second Temple. Hebrew did not die out after the Babylonian exile, but continued to be used in speaking and writing in a variety of settings

    Abstract: "In The Dangerous Duty of Rebuke Matthew Goldstone explores the ways in which religious leaders within early Jewish and Christian communities conceived of the obligation to rebuke their fellows based upon the biblical verse: "Rebuke your fellow but do not incur sin" (Leviticus 19:17). Analyzing texts from the Bible through the Talmud and late Midrashim as well as early Christian monastic writings, he exposes a shift from asking how to rebuke in the Second Temple and early Christian period, to whether one can rebuke in early rabbinic texts, to whether one should rebuke in later rabbinic and monastic sources.     Abstract: This volume presents the main lectures of the 22nd Congress of the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament (IOSOT) held in Stellenbosch, South Africa, in September 2016.     Abstract: Fighting over the Bible explores the bitter conflicts between main stream Jews and their internal and external opponents, especially between particular Jewish groups such as Pharisees, Sadducees, Qumranites, Samaritans, Rabbanites and Karaites, as well as with Christians and Muslims regarding their interpretations of Jewish Scripture. The Hebrew Bible/Old Testament is an important sacred text for all branches of the Abrahamic faiths, but it has more often divided than unified them. This volume explores and exemplifies the roots of these interpretive conflicts and controversies and traces the rich exegetical and theological approaches that grew out of them. Focusing on the Jewish sources from the late Second Temple period through the high Middle-Ages, it illustrates how the study of the Bible filled the vacuum left by the Temple’s destruction, and became the foundation of Jewish life throughout its long conflicted history

    Abstract: In Jewish, Christian, and Classical Exegetical Traditions in Jerome’s Translation of the Book of Exodus: Translation Technique and the Vulgate , Matthew Kraus offers a layered understanding of Jerome’s translation of biblical narrative, poetry, and law from Hebrew to Latin. Usually seen as a tool for textual criticism, when read as a work of literature, the Vulgate reflects a Late Antique conception of Hebrew grammar, critical use of Greek biblical traditions, rabbinic influence, Christian interpretation, and Classical style and motifs. Instead of typically treating the text of the Vulgate and Jerome himself separately, Matthew Kraus uncovers Late Antiquity in the many facets of the translator at work—grammarian, biblical exegete, Septuagint scholar, Christian intellectual, rabbinic correspondent, and devotee of Classical literature
