    Abstract: "In his three-volume history, Antony Polonsky provides a comprehensive survey—socio-political, economic, and religious—of the Jewish communities of eastern Europe from 1350 to the present. Until the Second World War, this was the heartland of the Jewish world: nearly three and a half million Jews lived in Poland alone, while nearly three million more lived in the Soviet Union. Although the majority of the Jews of Europe and the United States, and many of the Jews of Israel, originate from these lands, their history there is not well known. Rather, it is the subject of mythologizing and stereotypes that fail both to bring out the specific features of the Jewish civilization which emerged there and to illustrate what was lost. Jewish life, though often poor materially, was marked by a high degree of spiritual and ideological intensity and creativity. Antony Polonsky recreates this lost world—brutally cut down by the Holocaust and less brutally but still seriously damaged by the Soviet attempt to destroy Jewish culture. Wherever possible, the unfolding of history is illustrated by contemporary Jewish writings to show how Jews felt and reacted to the complex and difficult situations in which they found themselves." --

    Abstract: This collection of articles is tightly focused on metaphors in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible and their later afterlife in Jewish and Christian texts. The essays deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, several contributions employ metaphor theory in analysing the biblical texts, both conceptual frameworks such as blending theory and more traditional methods. Second, metaphors are studied both synchronically, that is, in relation to their current literary contexts, and diachronically, that is, mapping how they have been employed and re-interpreted in different ways and different texts throughout time. Third, other contributions read metaphors in light of theoretical frameworks such as feminist criticism, post-colonial theories, or power discourses that uncover aspects of significance often missed in historical studies. Finally, yet other contributions deal with the issue of how to translate metaphors in contemporary contexts

    Abstract: Much of the most recent research on Jewish scepticism was inspired by the work of the early modern Venetian rabbi Simone Luzzatto, the first thinker in the history of Jewish thought to declare himself a sceptic and a follower of the New Academy. This collected volume shines new light on the intimate relationship between Luzzatto’s sceptical thinking and an era marked by paradoxes and contrasts between religious devotion and scientific rationalism, as well as between the rabbinic-biblical Jewish tradition and the open tendency towards engagement with non-Jewish philosophical, literary, scientific, and theological cultures. It plots out an original path along which to understand Luzzatto’s scepticism by pointing to the various facets of being a Jewish sceptic in seventeenth-century Italy.

    Abstract: Theology is the science of the incomprehensible. Understood as an independent university discipline, it offers multifaceted perspectives that require not only an interdisciplinary but also an epistemological balancing act. Scientific theology in this sense is always exchange, reflection, encounter, and positioning as well as a form of transcendence. In thirteen contributions, the international authors shed light on the phenomenon of theology as an independent scientific discipline from different disciplinary, but also epistemological and religious points of view, which always oscillates between tradition, its own reflexivity and its relation to the world. The common characteristic feature is the border crossing along the intangible.     Abstract: Theologie ist die Wissenschaft vom Unbegreifbaren. Als eigenständige universitäre Disziplin verstanden bietet sie facettenreiche Perspektiven, die nicht nur einen interdisziplinären, sondern zugleich epistemologischen Balanceakt erfordern. Wissenschaftliche Theologie in diesem Sinne ist immer Austausch, Reflexion, Begegnung und Positionierung sowie eine Form von Transzendenz. In dreizehn Beiträgen beleuchten die internationalen Autor*innen aus unterschiedlichen disziplinären, aber auch erkenntnistheoretischen und religiösen Standpunkten das Phänomen von Theologie als eigenständiger wissenschaftlicher Disziplin, die stets zwischen Tradition, einer ihr eigenen Reflexivität und dem Bezug zur Welt changiert. Das ihnen gemeinsame kennzeichnende Merkmal ist der je unternommene Grenzgang entlang des Ungreifbaren. Responding to publications about the Western European and American exile experience of the Jews after 1933, this book offers comparative insights into the less trodden paths of the persecuted, illuminating the cultural and political context of the Balkan host countries, the response of local Jewish communities, and the reactions of common people and assorted criminals. The Balkans, often marginalised and loathed, emerges in hundreds of personal accounts of survivors gathered here, supplemented by extensive archival research, as a welcoming getaway, where thousands survived thanks to the Italian occupiers, illiterate peasants, and Communist-led Partisan resisters

    Abstract: Dieses bewegende Buch ist das Ergebnis einer einzigartigen historischen Spurensuche: Inna Gerasimova beschreibt als präzise Chronistin exemplarisch das Schicksal weißrussischer Jüdinnen und Juden während der nationalsozialistischen Besetzung des Landes. Dafür verwendet sie auch zahlreiche Zeitzeugenberichte, die das damalige Geschehen lebendiger nachvollziehbar machen als Überblickswerke und Statistiken es können. Der kommunistische Kommissar und Partisan Nikolaj Kiselëv wagte im August 1942 den Versuch, über 200 jüdische Menschen aus dem Dorf Dolginovo mehr als 1.500 Kilometer durch von den Deutschen besetztes Gebiet zu führen – nach Osten, hinter die rettende Frontlinie auf sowjetisch kontrolliertes Gebiet. Für dieses riskante Unterfangen wird er heute in Yad Vashem als ein „Gerechter unter den Völkern“ geehrt. Was veranlasste Kiselëv zu seinem Entschluss und wie verlief dieser von ihm organsierte „Marsch des Lebens“? Welches Schicksal widerfuhr denen, die sich auf den Weg machten?     Abstract: Das vorliegende Buch beschreibt das Schicksal polnischer Juden im besetzten Deutschland der Jahre 1945–1948. Untersucht wird vor allem ihr Verhältnis zu den einheimischen Deutschen, den Besatzungsmächten, den polnischen DPs sowie den Vertretern von Hilfsorganisationen in den DP-Lagern. Es ergibt sich das Bild einer Gemeinschaft, die ihre Wurzeln in der jüdischen Bevölkerung im Polen der Vorkriegszeit hat. Zugleich verkörpern diese Menschen eine neue Identität: die der Scher’it Hapleitah – der Überlebenden der Shoah. Aus den „polnischen Juden“ wurden in den Nachkriegsjahren Juden aus Polen, und schließlich schlichtweg Juden, die ihr Leben außerhalb ihres Herkunftslandes aufbauen wollten. Die Erfahrung der Shoah und der Glaube an eine Zukunft in Palästina hielten diese Gemeinschaft zusammen.
    Abstract: This book discusses the fate of Polish Jews in postwar Germany 1945–1948, focusing primarily on their relations with their surroundings: local German population, the occupying administration, Polish DPs, and representatives of the aid agencies in the DP camps. The book looks at a community, which to a large degree remained a continuation of the Jewish community in Poland. Its members were still part of the pre-war and wartime networks, while becoming a new entity: a group creating a new identity, that of Sh'erit ha-Pletah: the survivors of the Holocaust. During the years they spent in Germany Polish Jews became Jews from Poland and finally simply Jews building their lives outside their country of origin. This community was unified by the shared experience of the Holocaust and the belief in the future in Palestine.
    Abstract: Monografia opisuje los polskich Żydów w powojennych Niemczech w latach 1945–1948, koncentrując się przede wszystkim na ich relacji z otoczeniem: miejscową społecznością niemiecką, administracją i żołnierzami wojsk okupacyjnych, polskimi dipisami i przedstawicielami zarządzających obozami organizacji pomocowych. Z badań przedstawionych w książce wyłania się obraz społeczności, która była kontynuacją przedwojennej żydowskiej społeczności w Polsce, ale jednocześnie stawała się czymś zupełnie nowym – grupą budującą nową tożsamość, tożsamość Szerit hapleta – ocalałych z Zagłady. W czasie kilkuletniego pobytu w Niemczech polscy Żydzi stali się Żydami z Polski i wreszcie po prostu Żydami, budującymi życie poza krajem urodzenia. Spoiwem tej społeczności było doświadczenie Zagłady i wiara w przyszłość narodu w Palestynie.

    Abstract: Jewish music has become the subject of a respectable literature in different academic disciplines and a touchstone of public and intellectual discourse in such diverse fields as the performing arts and religious studies, the visual arts and philology, cultural studies, and librarianship, and spanning topics that extend to almost all continents. As a forward-looking and multidisciplinary endeavor, The Oxford Handbook of Jewish Music Studies maps this emerging field within the framework of spatiality, temporality, and collectivity as analytical and conceptual categories. It does so by embracing all hemispheres, and interrogating Jewish music’s meaning of various places and spaces across the temporal frame of antiquity through the early twenty-first century. The introductory chapter provides a theoretical foundation that paves the way for the rich selection of case studies brought together in the subsequent sections. These case studies document the different facets of Jewish music and theorize its multivalent correlation with spaces and collectives around the world. The thirty diverse chapters, conceived by an international team of thirty-one outstanding scholars, are divided into eight thematically organized sections, the first of which addresses Jewish music in various lands and territories (some without defined borders in time and space), followed by sections that focus on cities, as well selected spaces therein—ghetto, concert hall, archive, and sacred and ritual spaces. These sections, which largely look at actual and concrete spaces (roughly presented in the order of scale), are followed by the phenomenological spaces of destruction and remembrance, and shekhinah, that is, divine presence.

    Abstract: Dieses bewegende Buch ist das Ergebnis einer einzigartigen historischen Spurensuche: Inna Gerasimova beschreibt als präzise Chronistin exemplarisch das Schicksal weißrussischer Jüdinnen und Juden während der nationalsozialistischen Besetzung des Landes. Der kommunistische Kommissar und Partisan Nikolaj Kiselëv wagte im August 1942 den Versuch, über 200 jüdische Menschen aus dem Dorf Dolginovo mehr als 1.500 Kilometer durch von den Deutschen besetztes Gebiet zu führen – nach Osten, hinter die rettende Frontlinie auf sowjetisch kontrolliertes Gebiet. Für dieses riskante Unterfangen wird er heute in Yad Vashem als ein „Gerechter unter den Völkern“ geehrt.     Abstract: "This study investigates the negotiation of Jewish-German-Communist identity in post-Holocaust Germany, specifically East Germany. After an introduction to the political-historical context, it highlights the conflicted writings of six East German Jewish writers: Anna Seghers (1900-1983), Stefan Heym (1913-2001), Stephan Hermlin (1915-1997), Jurek Becker (1937-1997), Peter Edel (1921-1983), and Fred Wander (1917-2006). All were Holocaust survivors. All lost family members in the Holocaust. All were important writers who played a leading role in East German cultural life, and all were loyal citizens and committed socialists, although their definitions and maneuvers regarding Party loyalty differed greatly. Good soldiers, they viewed their writing as contributing to the social-political revolution taking place in East Germany. Informed by Holocaust and trauma studies, as well as psychology and deconstruction, this study looks for moments when Party discipline falters and other, repressed, thoughts and emotions surface, decentering the works. Some recurring questions addressed include: What is the image of Germans? Do the works evidence revenge fantasies? How does the negotiation of ostensibly mutually exclusive identities play out? Is there acknowledgement of the insufficiency of Communist theory to explain anti-Semitism, as well as recognition of Stalinist or other forms of Communist anti-Semitism? Although these writers ultimately established themselves in East Germany, attaining positions of privilege and even power, their best works nonetheless evince an acute sense of endangerment and vulnerability; they are documents both created and marked by trauma"--

    Abstract: "More than Parcels: Wartime Aid for Jews in Nazi-Era Camps and Ghettos edited by Jan Lánícek and Jan Lambertz explores the horrors of the Holocaust by focusing on the systematic starvation of Jewish civilians confined to Nazi ghettos and camps. The modest relief parcel, often weighing no more than a few pounds and containing food, medicine, and clothing, could extend the lives and health of prisoners. For Jews in occupied Europe, receiving packages simultaneously provided critical emotional sustenance in the face of despair and grief. Placing these parcels front and center in a history of World War II challenges several myths about Nazi rule and Allied responses. First, the traffic in relief parcels and remittances shows that the walls of Nazi detention sites and the wartime borders separating Axis Europe from the outside world were not hermetically sealed, even for Jewish prisoners. Aid shipments were often damaged or stolen, but they continued to be sent throughout the war. Second, the flow of relief parcels-and prisoner requests for them-contributed to information about the lethal nature of Nazi detention sites. Aid requests and parcel receipts became one means of transmitting news about the location, living conditions, and fate of Jewish prisoners to families, humanitarians, and Jewish advocacy groups scattered across the globe. Third, the contributors to More than Parcels reveal that tens of thousands of individuals, along with religious communities and philanthropies, mobilized parcel relief for Jews trapped in Europe. Recent histories of wartime rescue have focused on a handful of courageous activists who hid or led Jews to safety under perilous conditions.     Abstract: A History of Anti-Semitism examines the history, culture and literature of antisemitism from antiquity to the present. With contributions from an international team of scholars, whose essays were specially commissioned for this volume, it covers the long history of antisemitism starting with ancient Greece and Egypt, through the anti-Judaism of early Christianity, and the medieval era in both the Christian and Muslim worlds when Jews were defined as 'outsiders,' especially in Christian Europe. This portrayal often led to violence, notably pogroms that often accompanied Crusades, as well as to libels against Jews. The volume also explores the roles of Luther and the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the debate over Jewish emancipation, Marxism, and the social disruptions after World War 1 that led to the rise of Nazism and genocide. Finally, it considers current issues, including the dissemination of hate on social media and the internet and questions of definition and method.

    Abstract: Am 17. Februar 2019 wäre Walter Grab 100 Jahre alt geworden. Sein persönlicher Werdegang spiegelt die Herausforderungen und politischen Verwerfungen des 20. Jahrhunderts wider. Als Historiker hat er wichtige Beiträge zur Demokratiegeschichte und ihrer Verbindung zur Emanzipation der Juden geleistet. Insbesondere die Französische Revolution und ihre Wirkungsgeschichte haben ihn lebenslang beschäftigt. Dabei stand auch die Frage im Mittelpunkt, weshalb die Ideen der Revolution in Deutschland nicht den gleichen Erfolg hatten wie etwa in Frankreich oder England. Diese Forschungen verknüpfte er mit einem anderen großen Thema, zu dem er ebenfalls bedeutende Beiträge geleistet hat: Dem Verhältnis zwischen der Demokratiebewegung und der Emanzipation der Juden in Europa. Im Rahmen eines interdisziplinären Kolloquiums am Europa Kolleg und dem Institut für die Geschichte der deutschen Juden in Hamburg wurden seine Arbeiten gewürdigt und mit der Frage nach der Zukunft der Demokratie in Europa verknüpft werden. Der Band stellt die Ergebnisse einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit vor. Mit einem Grußwort des Kultursenators Dr. Carsten Brosda.     Abstract: On February 17, 2019, Walter Grab would have turned 100. His personal career reflects the challenges and political upheavals of the 20th century. As a historian, he made important contributions to the history of democracy and its connection to the emancipation of the Jews. In particular, the French Revolution and its history of impact have occupied him throughout his life. He also focused on the question of why the ideas of the Revolution did not have the same success in Germany as they did, for example, in France or England. He linked this research to another major topic to which he also made significant contributions: The relationship between the democracy movement and the emancipation of Jews in Europe. In the context of an interdisciplinary colloquium at the Europa Kolleg Hamburg and the Institute for the History of German Jews in Hamburg, his work was honored and linked to the question of the future of democracy in Europe. This volume presents the results to a broader public. With a greeting by the Senator for Culture Dr. Carsten Brosda. This book examines the history of the impact of the Shoah in various settings of education and reflects on the theoretical and empirical research to date. Knowledge about and references to the Shoah continue to be transmitted between generations and at the same time are continuously updated in institutional and discursive contexts of contemporary society. This affects educators in several ways: in their own biographies and learning histories and in their subsequent teaching practice. The authors deal, among other things, with the politics of memory, the inheritance of feelings and the possibility of addressing the Shoah in various socialisation processes.

    Abstract: "According to Raúl González Salinero, the plurality of religious expressions within Judaism prior to the predominance of the rabbinical current disproves the assumption according to which some Jewish customs and precepts (especially the Sabbath) prevented Jews from joining the Roman army without renouncing their ancestral culture. The military exemption occasionally granted to the Jews by the Roman authorities was compatible with their voluntary enlistment (as it was in the Hellenistic armies) in order to obtain Roman citizenship. As the sources attest, Judaism did not pose any insurmountable obstacle to integration of the Jews into the Roman world. They achieved a noteworthy presence in the Roman army by the fourth century CE, at which time the Church's influence over imperial power led to their exclusion from the militia armata"--

    Abstract: Collaborative engagement between activist academics from Israel and Northern Ireland highlighted the challenges and potential of working through education to promote shared learning and shared life in divided societies. Following these initial explorations, the volume brought together educationalists from Europe, the United States and South Africa to widen the range of experience and insights, and broaden the base of the conversation. The result is this book on the role of shared education, not only in deeply divided societies, but also in places where minorities face discrimination, where migrants face prejudice and barriers, or where society fails to deal positively with cultural diversity. Together, the contributors challenged themselves to develop theoretical and practical paradigms, based on practical knowledge and experience, to promote activist pedagogies. Their shared purpose was to work for more humane, just and democratic societies, in which education offers genuine hope for sustained transformational change. The four main themes around which the book is organized are: educating for democratic-multicultural citizenship, models of shared learning, nurturing intercultural competencies, and reconciling dialogue in the face of conflicting narratives. The book draws on a wide range of international perspectives and insights to identify practical strategies for change in local contexts

    Abstract: Zwischen 1918 und 1921 werden in der Ukraine über 100 000 Juden von Bauern, Städtern und Soldaten ermordet, die sie für die Russische Revolution und deren Folgen verantwortlich machen. Ganz normale Bürgerinnen und Bürger berauben plötzlich ihre jüdischen Nachbarn, brennen ihre Häuser nieder, zerreißen ihre Tora-Rollen, missbrauchen sie sexuell und töten sie. Der Holocaust-Historiker Jeffrey Veidlinger hat diese Welle genozidaler Gewalt rekonstruiert, bei der ganz unterschiedliche Gruppen von Menschen alle zu demselben Ergebnis kamen – dass die Ermordung von Juden eine akzeptable Antwort auf ihre Probleme sei. Als die Gewalt in die Kleinstadt Slovetschno kam, ist Rosa Zaks erst sieben Jahre alt. Doch sie wird ihr Leben lang nicht vergessen können, wie sie und ihre Geschwister mitten in der Nacht von der Mutter geweckt und auf den Dachboden des Nachbarhauses gebracht wurden. Aus ihrem Versteck müssen die Kinder mit ansehen, wie ein Pogrom gegen die jüdischen Bewohner des Ortes entfesselt wird... Anhand von lange vernachlässigtem Archivmaterial, darunter Tausende neu entdeckte Zeugenaussagen, Prozessakten und offizielle Anordnungen, zeigt der renommierte Historiker Jeffrey Veidlinger, warum die Pogrome in Osteuropa eine Art Vorgeschichte des Holocaust bilden. Das überaus differenzierte Bild dieser heute weitgehend in Vergessenheit geratenen Ereignisse, das durch die Geschichten von Überlebenden, Tätern, Mitarbeitern von Hilfsorganisationen und Regierungsvertretern entsteht, verdeutlicht, warum die Juden "mitten im zivilisierten Europa" in akuter Gefahr waren, vernichtet zu werden - und ganz Europa davon wusste.

Diese Studie zeigt auf, wie sich das Verhältnis der nichtjüdischen Polen zu ihren jüdischen Nachbarn während des Holocaust wandelte und wie letztere um ihr Überleben kämpften. Durch das Prisma einer Stadt werden die wichtigsten Fragen polnisch-jüdischer Beziehungsgeschichte gestellt, u.a. zur Rolle der nichtjüdischen Polen während des Holocaust und zum Antisemitismus im Polen der Nachkriegszeit.

    Abstract: The Salvation of Israel investigates Christianity's eschatological Jew, the role and characteristics of the Jews at the end of days in the Christian imagination. It explores the depth of Christian ambivalence regarding these Jews, from Paul's Epistle to the Romans, through late antiquity and the Middle Ages, to the Puritans of the seventeenth century. Jeremy Cohen contends that few aspects of a religion shed as much light on the character and the self-understanding of its adherents as its expectations for the end of time. Moreover, eschatological beliefs express and mold an outlook toward non-believers, situating them in an overall scheme of human history and conditioning interaction with them as that history unfolds.Cohen's close readings of biblical commentary, theological texts, and Christian iconography reveal the dual role of the Jews of the last days. For rejecting belief and salvation in Jesus Christ, they have been linked to the false messiah, the Antichrist, the agent of Satan and the exemplary embodiment of evil.     Abstract: "Yehuda Halper examines Jewish depictions of Socrates and Socratic questioning of the divine among European and North African Jews of the 12th-15th centuries. Without direct access to Plato, their understanding of Socrates is indirect, based on legendary material, on fragmentary quotations from Plato, or on Aristotle. Out of these sources, Jewish authors of this period formed two distinct views of Socrates: one as a wise, ascetic, monotheist, and the other as a vocal skeptic. The latter view has its roots in Plato's Apology where Socrates describes his divine mandate to question all knowledge, including knowledge of the divine. After exploring how this and similar questions arise in the works of Judah Halevi and the Hebrew Averroes, Halper traces how such open-questioning of the divine arises in the works of Maimonides, Jacob Anatoli, Gersonides, and Abraham Bibago"--

    Abstract: Following tremendous advances in recent years in the study of religious belief, this volume adopts a fresh understanding of Jewish religious life in Poland. Approaches deriving from the anthropology, history, phenomenology, psychology, and sociology of religion have replaced the methodologies of social or political history that were applied in the past, offering fascinating new perspectives. The well-established interest in hasidism continues, albeit from new angles, but topics that have barely been considered before are well represented here too. Women’s religious practice gains new prominence, and a focus on elites has given way to a consideration of the beliefs and practices of ordinary people. Reappraisals of religious responses to secularization and modernity, both liberal and Orthodox, offer more nuanced insights into this key issue. Other research areas represented here include the material history of Jewish religious life in eastern Europe and the shift of emphasis from theology to praxis in the search for the defining quality of religious experience. The contemporary reassessments in this volume, with their awareness of emerging techniques that have the potential to extract fresh insights from source materials both old and new, show how our understanding of what it means to be Jewish is continuing to expand.
