Kurzfassung:
The history of photography in the land of Israel spans a period of a hundred years, from the moment the first pioneers and colonizers arrived in Palestine towards the end of the 19th century. Besides their pioneering endeavor of resettling the ancestral land, they have also gained recognition as the pioneers of the local photography made from a Jewish Zionist point of view, and with a definite goal. In a limited selection of images, this volume aims at uncovering and reflecting the beauty of the early photographs, veiled mostly by their aura of nostalgia, and deals essentially with Jewish photography in the land of Israel from the early work of the first pioneers at the end of the 19th century and until the present, a topic which has not as yet been approached in a thorough study covering the entire period. Thus far, research on the history of photography in the land of Israel has been limited to a handful of publications and this book is only a preparation for a deeper and more thorough investigation of the subject and a detailed survey of the still uncharted territory which is photography in Eretz Israel.
