    Abstract: "In his three-volume history, Antony Polonsky provides a comprehensive survey—socio-political, economic, and religious—of the Jewish communities of eastern Europe from 1350 to the present. Until the Second World War, this was the heartland of the Jewish world: nearly three and a half million Jews lived in Poland alone, while nearly three million more lived in the Soviet Union. Although the majority of the Jews of Europe and the United States, and many of the Jews of Israel, originate from these lands, their history there is not well known. Rather, it is the subject of mythologizing and stereotypes that fail both to bring out the specific features of the Jewish civilization which emerged there and to illustrate what was lost. Jewish life, though often poor materially, was marked by a high degree of spiritual and ideological intensity and creativity. Antony Polonsky recreates this lost world—brutally cut down by the Holocaust and less brutally but still seriously damaged by the Soviet attempt to destroy Jewish culture. Wherever possible, the unfolding of history is illustrated by contemporary Jewish writings to show how Jews felt and reacted to the complex and difficult situations in which they found themselves." --

    Abstract: This collection of articles is tightly focused on metaphors in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible and their later afterlife in Jewish and Christian texts. The essays deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, several contributions employ metaphor theory in analysing the biblical texts, both conceptual frameworks such as blending theory and more traditional methods. Second, metaphors are studied both synchronically, that is, in relation to their current literary contexts, and diachronically, that is, mapping how they have been employed and re-interpreted in different ways and different texts throughout time. Third, other contributions read metaphors in light of theoretical frameworks such as feminist criticism, post-colonial theories, or power discourses that uncover aspects of significance often missed in historical studies. Finally, yet other contributions deal with the issue of how to translate metaphors in contemporary contexts

Das erste haben bereits viele gelesen, das zweite wurde bisher kaum beachtet. Die Studie „Schreibformen. Georges Perecs literarischer Materialismus“ schließt diese Forschungslücke. Sie skizziert die marxistische Genealogie in Perecs Texten und zeigt, dass seine oulipotische Praxis nicht zu bloßen Sprachspielereien führt. Das Schreiben unter formalen Einschränkungen ist vielmehr als eine Auseinandersetzung mit gesellschaftlichen Zwängen zu begreifen, unter denen auch die künstlerische Arbeit steht. Literarische Praxis und Gesellschaftskritik fallen dabei zusammen. Angesichts der gegenwärtigen Unschärfe im Verhältnis von Aktionismus und Kunst sind Perecs Schreibformen wegweisend.

The waning days of the Persian empire coincided with the continued ascendance of the high priest and Jerusalem temple as powerful political, cultural, and religious institutions in Judea. The Aramaic Scrolls from Qumran, only recently published in full, testify to the existence of a flourishing but previously unknown Jewish literary tradition dating from the end of Persian rule to the rise of the Hasmoneans. Throughout this book, Robert Jones analyzes how Israel’s priestly institutions are represented in these writings, and he demonstrates that they are essential for understanding the Jewish priesthood at this crucial stage in its history

    Abstract: Am 17. Februar 2019 wäre Walter Grab 100 Jahre alt geworden. Sein persönlicher Werdegang spiegelt die Herausforderungen und politischen Verwerfungen des 20. Jahrhunderts wider. Als Historiker hat er wichtige Beiträge zur Demokratiegeschichte und ihrer Verbindung zur Emanzipation der Juden geleistet. Insbesondere die Französische Revolution und ihre Wirkungsgeschichte haben ihn lebenslang beschäftigt. Dabei stand auch die Frage im Mittelpunkt, weshalb die Ideen der Revolution in Deutschland nicht den gleichen Erfolg hatten wie etwa in Frankreich oder England. Diese Forschungen verknüpfte er mit einem anderen großen Thema, zu dem er ebenfalls bedeutende Beiträge geleistet hat: Dem Verhältnis zwischen der Demokratiebewegung und der Emanzipation der Juden in Europa. Im Rahmen eines interdisziplinären Kolloquiums am Europa Kolleg und dem Institut für die Geschichte der deutschen Juden in Hamburg wurden seine Arbeiten gewürdigt und mit der Frage nach der Zukunft der Demokratie in Europa verknüpft werden. Der Band stellt die Ergebnisse einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit vor. Mit einem Grußwort des Kultursenators Dr. Carsten Brosda. Mit Beiträgen von Carsten Brosda, Uwe Friesel, Alexander Grab, Andreas Grimmel, Arno Herzig, Yael Kupferberg und Rainer Nicolaysen.
    Abstract: On February 17, 2019, Walter Grab would have turned 100. His personal career reflects the challenges and political upheavals of the 20th century. As a historian, he made important contributions to the history of democracy and its connection to the emancipation of the Jews. In particular, the French Revolution and its history of impact have occupied him throughout his life. He also focused on the question of why the ideas of the Revolution did not have the same success in Germany as they did, for example, in France or England. He linked this research to another major topic to which he also made significant contributions: The relationship between the democracy movement and the emancipation of Jews in Europe. In the context of an interdisciplinary colloquium at the Europa Kolleg Hamburg and the Institute for the History of German Jews in Hamburg, his work was honored and linked to the question of the future of democracy in Europe. This volume presents the results to a broader public. With a greeting by the Senator for Culture Dr. Carsten Brosda.     Abstract: Im Dezember 321 teilte der römische Kaiser Konstantin den Kölner Ratsherren mit, dass es fortan gesetzlich möglich sei, auch jüdische Bürger in den Rat zu berufen. Sein Brief gilt als die älteste schriftliche Quelle, die jüdisches Leben auf dem Gebiet des heutigen Deutschlands belegt. Er ist somit die Grundlage dafür, dass 2021 das Festjahr „1700 Jahre jüdisches Leben in Deutschland“ begangen wurde.     Abstract: In the Hellenistic period, Jews participated in the imagination of a cosmopolitan world and they developed their own complex cultural forms. Dieses Buch will die Erinnerung an den Holocaust in der Zusammenarbeit von Überlebenden und Zeichner:innen auf ungewöhnliche Weise bewahren und weitergeben, gerade auch an eine junge Leserschaft, indem es eingespielte Sehgewohnheiten und Bilder vom Holocaust aufbricht. Ausgewiesene Zeithistoriker:innen erklären in knappen, instruktiven Nachworten den Kontext der Geschichten, die aber auch ohne solche Erläuterungen unmittelbar und auf ergreifende Weise ein unfassbares Geschehen lebendig werden lassen.

For the first time, Empire of Destruction considers Europe’s Jews alongside all the other major victim groups: captive Red Army soldiers, the Soviet urban population, unarmed civilian victims of preventive terror and reprisals, the mentally and physically disabled, the European Roma and the Polish intelligentsia. Kay shows how each of these groups was regarded by the Nazi regime as a potential threat to Germany’s ability to successfully wage a war for hegemony in Europe.     Abstract: Apocryphal traditions, often shared by Jews and Christians, have played a significant role in the history of both religions. The 26 essays in this volume examine regional and linguistic developments in Ethiopia, Egypt, Syria, Armenia, the Balkans, and Italy. Dissenting groups, such as the Samaritans, followers of John the Baptist, and mediæval dualists are also discussed. Furthermore, the book looks at interactions of Judaism and Christianity with the religions of Iran. Seldom verified or authorized, and frequently rejected by Churches, apocryphal texts had their own process of development, undergoing significant transformations. The book shows how apocryphal accounts could become a medium of literary and artistic elaboration and mythological creativity. Local adaptations of Biblical stories indicate that copyists, authors and artists conceived of themselves as living not in a post-Biblical era, but in direct continuity with Biblical personages

    Abstract: One quarter of all Holocaust victims lived on the territory that now forms Ukraine, yet the Holocaust there has not received due attention. This book delineates the participation of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and its armed force, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (Ukrainska povstanska armiia—UPA), in the destruction of the Jewish population of Ukraine under German occupation in 1941–44. The extent of OUN and UPA’s culpability in the Holocaust has been a controversial issue in Ukraine and within the Ukrainian diaspora as well as in Jewish communities and Israel. Occasionally, the controversy has broken into the press of North America, the EU, and Israel. Triangulating sources from Jewish survivors, Soviet investigations, German documentation, documents produced by OUN itself, and memoirs of OUN activists, it has been possible to establish that: OUN militias were key actors in the anti-Jewish violence of summer 1941; OUN recruited for and infiltrated police formations that provided indispensable manpower for the Germans' mobile killing units; and in 1943, thousands of these policemen deserted from German service to join the OUN-led nationalist insurgency, during which UPA killed Jews who had managed to survive the major liquidations of 1942.

    Abstract: Die Görlitzer Synagoge wurde 1911 eingeweiht. Das 600 Plätze fassende jüdische Gebetshaus mit seiner prächtigen Mischung aus neoklassizistischer Architektur und Jugendstil-Interieur wurde während der Reichspogromnacht angezündet, jedoch nicht zerstört. Die Jüdische Gemeinde von Görlitz wurde zerstreut, verhaftet und ausgelöscht, doch die Synagoge hat, allen Krisen zum Trotz, die kommenden 80 Jahre überlebt. Mit seinen wechselnden Eigentümern – den Nazis, Sowjets, der Jüdischen Gemeinde Dresden bis hin zur Stadt Görlitz – sah sich die Synagoge konkurrierenden Ideen gegenüber, was mit dem Gebäude geschehen sollte. Skandalöse Verwirrungen, Misswirtschaft und Paralyse waren die Folgen, die die Gebäudestruktur fast an den Punkt des kompletten Zusammenbruchs führten. Schließlich wurden in den vergangenen Jahren politische und finanzielle Konzepte erarbeitet, welche die Synagoge nicht nur retteten, sondern ihre frühere Pracht wiederherstellten. Wie sieht ihre Zukunft aus? Dieses Buch erzählt die Geschichte dieses architektonischen Juwels, der Akteure, Probleme und schließlich Vollendung seiner Rettung.

    Abstract: Am 6. Mai 1939 wurde mit einem Festakt auf der Wartburg in Eisenach das »Institut zur Erforschung und Beseitigung des jüdischen Einflusses auf das deutsche kirchliche Leben« auf der Grundlage einer Entschließung von elf evangelischen Landeskirchen gegründet. Das Institut war eng mit der Ideologie und Organisation der aus Thüringen stammenden »Kirchenbewegung Deutsche Christen« verbunden. Ziel dieser kirchenpolitischen Bewegung war es, den christlichen Glauben und die Institution der Kirche den Vorgaben der nationalsozialistischen Weltanschauung anzupassen. Die »Forschungsarbeiten« des kirchlichen »Entjudungsinstituts« dienten dazu, die Ausgrenzungs- und Verfolgungspolitik der nationalsozialistischen Machthaber gegenüber den Juden zu unterstützen und den Antisemitismus als Grundpfeiler der nationalsozialistischen Rasseideologie zu legitimieren. [»De-Jewification« of Theology and Church. The Eisenach "Institute for the Research and Elimination of Jewish Influence on German Church Life" 1939-1945 On 6 May 1939, at a ceremony at the Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, the »Institute for the Research and Elimination of Jewish Influence on German Church Life« was founded on the basis of a resolution passed by eleven Protestant regional churches. The Institute was closely connected with the ideology and organization of the »Church Movement German Christians«, which originated in Thuringia. The aim of this church political movement was to adapt the Christian faith and the institution of the church to the guidelines of the National Socialist world view. The »research work« of the ecclesiastical »Institute for De-Jewification« served to support the exclusion and persecution policy of the National Socialist rulers towards the Jews and to legitimize anti-Semitism as the cornerstone of the National Socialist racial ideology and to purify the Protestant Church from all alleged Jewish influences.

    Abstract: This book aims to create an integral picture of the social, economic and cultural history of the Jews in Lithuania during the course of more than six hundred years – from the Middle Ages to the 1990s. It is a translation of the study “Lietuvos žydai. Istorinė studija” (Engl. “Lithuanian Jews. Historical study”), published in Lithuanian in 2012. The Book was written by an interna-tional group of scholars from Lithuania, Israel, the United States of America and Germany. The world of Lithuanian Jewry is reconstructed through different aspects of the development of community and society: demography, social and economic activity, self-government institutions of the community, cultural and religious movements, literature and the press, education, discriminative policy of the authorities and relations with the dominant church, segregation, assimilation and changes of identity, anti-Judaism and anti-Semitism, and the Holocaust

    Abstract: Postkoloniale Studien zählen aktuell zu den einflussreichsten kritischen Interventionen, was angesichts der massiven Effekte des Kolonialismus nicht verwundern kann. Postkoloniale Theorie zielt darauf ab, die verschiedenen Ebenen kolonialer Begegnungen zu analysieren und dabei die sozio-historischen Interdependenzen und Verflechtungen zwischen den Ländern des »Südens« und des »Nordens« herauszuarbeiten. Diese Einführung erschließt das weite Feld postkolonialer Theoriebildung über eine kritische Debatte der Schriften der drei prominentesten postkolonialen Stimmen – Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak und Homi Bhabha. Die aktualisierte dritte Auflage unterzieht insbesondere die neuen Schriften Spivaks und Bhabhas einer kritischen Würdigung, setzt sich aber auch mit den gegenwärtigen Diskussionen um Globalisierung, Religion, Menschenrechte und Dekolonisierung auseinander.

    Abstract: "Gersonides' Afterlife is the first full-scale treatment of the reception of one of the greatest scientific minds of medieval Judaism: Gersonides (1288-1344). An outstanding representative of the Hebrew Jewish culture that then flourished in southern France, Gersonides wrote on mathematics, logic, astronomy, astrology, physical science, metaphysics and theology, and commented on almost the entire bible. His strong-minded attempt to integrate these different areas of study into a unitary system of thought was deeply rooted in the Aristotelian tradition and yet innovative in many respects, and thus elicited diverse and often impassionate reactions.     Abstract: Cartoons uniting visual representation with cultural associations, can cause devastation. One picture may save a thousand words but we will never know how many hundreds of thousands of lives were not saved, how many millions of lives were not even lived, because of the climate of fear and of hate prompted and promoted by the anti-Semitic pictures of Satanic horned Jews. From the 12th to the 21st century, these cartoons, simplifying and intensifying fears and hatreds, were powerful tools in the spread of anti-Semitism. These images first appeared in medieval Christianity, reappeared in 19th and 20th century Racialism, Fascism and Marxism and today are part of the visual images of contemporary Islam; four absolutely different belief systems with different life cycles all sharing the exact same indelible meme with its exact same visual expression targeting the exact same expiatory victim. For a thousand years, the power of this fabrication has erased existential realities and, with devastating consequences, the fear generated by the image of the demonised Jew has been reflected onto the real Jew. Some of the cartoons in this book may shock our sensibilities, to many they are a vital shared social truth, to others a vile experienced reality

    Abstract: "The authors publish a previously unedited Regimen of Health attributed to Avenzoar (Ibn Zuhr), translated at Montpellier in 1299 in a collaboration between a Jewish philosopher and a Christian surgeon, the former translating the original Arabic into their shared Occitan vernacular, the latter translating that into Latin. They use manuscript evidence to argue that the text was produced in two stages, first a quite literal version, then a revision improved in style and in language adapted to contemporary European medicine. Such collaborative translations are well known, but the revelation of the inner workings of the translation process in this case is exceptional. A separate Hebrew translation by the philosopher (also edited here) gives independent evidence of the lost Arabic original." --

    Abstract: Versöhnung wird aus jüdischer Perspektive genau dann notwendig, wenn der einzelne Mensch oder die Gruppe die gebotene Lebensordnung überschreitet. Dann gilt es Mittel und Wege an der Hand zu haben oder zu finden, um in diese zurückkehren zu können. Schon zur Zeit des Alten Israel wurde ein Tag im Jahr zu eben jenem Zweck formalisiert, der sogenannte „Tag der Versöhnung“ (Jom Kippur).Dieser Band untersucht im Kontext des jüdischen Versöhnungstages das Versöhnungsgeschehen in verschiedenen Relationen: Gott-Mensch, Mensch-Mensch und mit Blick auf die Gegenwart auch die Versöhnung des Menschen mit sich selbst.     Abstract: Jerusalem is a child of the desert, a city precariously hovering on its brink, exposed to a bright, unrelenting sun. Its never-ending story continues to fascinate people. Jerusalem is not only an important historical and spiritual site but also a modern city, home and workplace to three quarters of a million people that draws attention as the Middle East's most controversial urban center. Yet the city we know today can actually only be understood against the background of the comprehensive and rapid changes which took place here in the second half of the 19th and the first decades of the 20th centuries. Beyond the Wall is a new take on an old city, offering a unique and unusual perspective. As an original work of non-fiction, the book sheds light on some of the enigmas of Jerusalem’s more recent past, telling the tale of its growth from a provincial town somewhere in the Turkish Empire into a modern city during the second half of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century. It recalls the time when Turkish rule was declining and many different population groups became active in Jerusalem, founding their own neighborhoods, institutions, and businesses while they competed for influence—Jews and Arabs as well as the French, Germans, British, Russians, Austrians, Italians, and Americans, their consuls and clergy. The book also includes two chapters on Arab Jerusalem—a subject that is often neglected—and a preface by Teddy Kollek, who served as the city’s mayor for almost 30 years.

Damit eröffnen sich neue Perspektiven auf die Geschichte der Migration in Hamburg.
