Abstract:
Gumbel was a professor of mathematical statistics at the University of Heidelberg. In the interwar period he strongly criticized German militarism. He was a pacifist, a socialist, and a secular Jew and, as such. he was dismissed in 1932 from his position at the University and immigrated to France. There he held important positions in Lyon and Paris. In 1940 he immigrated to New York, where he taught at the New School for Social Research and Columbia University until his death.
