Abstract: "This book discusses the "long fifteenth century" in Iberian history, between the 1391 pogroms and the forced conversions of Aragonese Muslims in 1526, a period characterized by persecutions, conversions and social violence, on the one hand, and cultural exchange, on the other. It was a historical moment of unstable religious ideas and identities, before the rigid turn taken by Spanish Catholicism by the middle of the sixteenth century; a period in which the physical and symbolic borders separating the three religions were transformed and redefined but still remained extraordinarily porous. The collection argues that the aggressive tone of many polemical texts has until now blinded historiography to the interconnected nature of social and cultural intimacy, above all in dialogue and cultural transfer in later medieval Iberia. Contributors are Ana Echevarría, Gad Freudenthal, Mercedes García-Arenal, Maria Laura Giordano, Yonatan Glazer-Eytan, Eleazar Gutwirth, Felipe Pereda, Rosa M. Rodríguez Porto, Katarzyna K. Starczewska, John Tolan, Gerard Wiegers, and Yosi Yisraeli"--

Abstract: "At first glance, this book might appear to be yet another study on anti-Semitism in Argentina, supplementing those portraying this Southern Cone country as a Nazi shelter and perpetrator of anti-Jewish acts. Accounts of the last military dictatorship (1976-1983), which was responsible for the disappearance of thousands of people of Jewish origin, have contributed to this image. Memories that Lie a Little, however, challenges this view, shedding new light on Jewish experiences during the military dictatorship. Based on extensive archival research, it maps the positions of a wide range of Jewish organizations toward the military regime, opening the way for a better understanding of this complex historical period. If, then, the dictatorship was not actually anti-Semitic in the strictest sense of the term, why is it remembered as such? Historical research is complemented here by a reconstruction of the ways in which the notion of the regime's anti-Semitism was crafted from early on, and an examination of its uses, as well as the changes that this narrative underwent in the following years."--

Abstract: "Hasidism is a textbook that introduces sources to the study of the Hasidic movement. Hasidism, an Orthodox Jewish sect that originated in Poland in the 18th century, today counts over 400,000 adherents, primarily in the US, Israel, and the UK. Scholarly interest in this history of Hasidic Judaism and Hasidic Jews is growing, but there is no textbook dedicated to research methods in the field. Hasidism, edited by an internationally recognized historian of Hasidism, aims to remedy this gap in the literature. The work's twelve chapters each of draws upon a set of different source material (such as folklore, music, or material culture) to answer questions in the history of Hasidism. This intervention is necessary because traditionally, historians have limited their research to printed word sources, typically written by rebbes, the leaders in the community. But by doing so, historians have inadvertently erased the ordinary members of the Hasidic community while centralizing its leaders. The contributors to this volume are keenly aware of this limitation, and instead use previously untapped sources to shed new light on the subject. Ultimately, this textbook will present research methods that can decentralize the role community leaders play in the current literature and reclaim the everyday lives of Eastern Europe's Hasidic Jews. As collected whole, Hasidism "will assemble...knowledge of existing sources for studying the history and culture of Hasidism" into a comprehensive and unique reference work."--
