    Abstract: "Le projet de rédiger l'inventaire des documents consistoriaux concernant l'histoire du judaïsme algérien est né en 1979 sous l'impulsion de Gérard Nahon et soutenu par l'Institut Ben Zvi de l'Université Hébraïque de Jérusalem. Richard Ayoun a accompli la tâche colossale de rechercher, d'étudier ces archives en France, en Israël, aux États-Unis et en Algérie, de les dépouiller, les analyser et les répertorier avec rigueur, patience et détermination. Cet inventaire analytique des archives consistoriales des Juifs d'Algérie, depuis la conquête française en 1830 jusqu'à «la séparation des Églises et de l'État» en 1905, procure un accès direct au plus important ensemble de documents existants sur le sujet, les archives propres aux communautés d'Algérie ayant pratiquement disparu en 1962 dans la tourmente de l'exode. L'ouvrage couvre l'évolution du statut des Juifs d'Algérie ainsi que leur vie professionnelle, sociale, religieuse et culturelle. Le complète une bibliographie d'une extrême richesse étendue à des périodiques locaux aujourd'hui malaisément accessibles, pourvue d'une liste alphabétique des articles par auteurs et par titres.     Abstract: "Holocaust accounts typically cast Jewish victims as meek, going "like sheep to the slaughter." Given such portrayals, people ask, "Why didn't Jews resist?" But Jews did resist, staging armed uprisings in ghettos and camps throughout Nazi-occupied Europe. This book's goal is not to dispel the myth of Jewish passivity, however; instead, it argues that Jewish resistance deserves explanation. Research on social movements shows that protest occurs when protesters have an opportunity for action and both the material resources and belief in themselves to get their protest off the ground, but members of Jewish resistance movements lacked these factors. So why did they fight back? Using methods of comparative-historical sociology, the book answers this question by comparing three Jewish ghettos during World War II: Warsaw (site of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943), Vilna (where activists planned for armed resistance in the ghetto but could not achieve that goal), and Lodz (where no plans for armed resistance emerged). It finds that resistance rested on Jews' assessments of the threats facing them, and especially on their hope for survival. Somewhat ironically, armed resistance took place only once activists reached the critical conclusion that they had no hope for survival and saw such resistance as the best response to their situation. These findings have implications for other examples of resistance under extreme conditions, such as prison riots and rebellions of enslaved people"--

    Abstract: Following tremendous advances in recent years in the study of religious belief, this volume adopts a fresh understanding of Jewish religious life in Poland. Approaches deriving from the anthropology, history, phenomenology, psychology, and sociology of religion have replaced the methodologies of social or political history that were applied in the past, offering fascinating new perspectives.     Abstract: The Jewish Orphanage in Leiden was the last one of 8 such care homes to open its doors in The Netherlands before the Second World War. After spending almost 39 years in an old and utterly inadequate building in Leiden's city centre, the inauguration in 1929 of a brand-new building, shown on the front cover, was the start of a remarkably productive and prosperous period. The building still stands there, proudly but sadly, to this day: the relatively happy period lasted less than 14 years. On Wednesday evening, 17th March 1943, the Leiden Police, under German instructions, closed down the Orphanage and delivered 50 children and 9 staff to the Leiden railway station, from where they were brought to Transit Camp Westerbork in the Northeast of the country. Two boys were released from Westerbork thanks to tireless efforts of a neighbour in Leiden; one young woman survived Auschwitz, and one young girl escaped to Palestine via Bergen-Belsen. The 55 others were deported to Sobibor, not one of them survived. Some 168 children lived in the new building at one time or another between August 1929 and March 1943. This book reconstructs life in the orphanage based on the many stories and photographs which they left us. It is dedicated to the memory of those who perished in the holocaust, but also to those who survived. Without them this book could not have been written

    Abstract: "What compels Jews in the Ottoman Empire, Turkey, and abroad to promote a positive image of Ottomans and Turks while they deny the Armenian genocide and the existence of antisemitism in Turkey? Based on historical narrative, the Jews expelled from Spain in 1492 were embraced by the Ottoman Empire and then later, protected from the Nazis during WWII. If we believe that Turks and Jews have lived in harmony for so long, then how can we believe that the Turks could have committed genocide against the Armenians? Marc David Baer confronts these convictions and circumstances to reflect on what moral responsibility the descendants of the victims of one genocide have to the descendants of victims of another. Baer delves into the history of Muslim-Jewish relations in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey to find the origin of these many tangled truths. He aims to bring about reconciliation between Jews, Muslims, and Christians, not only to face inconvenient historical facts but to confront it and come to terms. By looking at the complexities of interreligious relations, Holocaust denial, genocide and ethnic cleansing, and confronting some long-standing historical stereotypes, Baer sets out to tell a new history that goes against Turkish antisemitism and admits to the Armenian genocide"--

    Abstract: "Jewish voting is both distinctive and paradoxical. Stereotypes about the voting habits of American Jews include that they vote at unusually high levels, that they're all liberals, that they vote overwhelmingly for Democratic candidates in disregard to their self-interest, and that Israel is their most important issue. Not only are all of those claims wrong, but, more important, they obscure aspects of Jews' voting behavior that are much more interesting. This book uncovers new perspectives on Jews' political choices by analyzing the unprecedented amount of survey data that is now available, including both surveys of Jews and surveys that permit contrasting the voting of Jews with that of comparable non-Jews. The data suggest several mysteries about Jewish voting. It is known that more Jews are Democrats than are liberals, but there has not been a previous exploration of why more politically conservative Jews are not Republicans. Rather than all Jews being flaming liberals, a substantial number of social issue liberals favor a smaller government. The Democratic presidential vote of Jews was about the same in 2012 as in 1932, paradoxical stability given that the same people would not have voted in these two elections. And while most American Jews care about Israel, most also are ambivalent about many of its policies; as a result, they are less likely to vote on the basis of what Israelis consider Israel's best interest. A fresh picture of Jews' political behaviors shows Jews are no longer politically monolithic. They vote on the basis of their self-interest and their values, but not all Jews share the same self-interest or the same values."--

    Abstract: Auf der Suche nach einem sicheren Hafen kreuzen Schiffe mit Geflüchteten an Bord über Flüsse und Meere. 32 Staaten beraten zehn Tage lang über die Aufnahme von Verfolgten - doch sie handeln nicht, am Ende gibt es nur Lippenbekenntnisse. Kein Staat will ihnen Zuflucht gewähren. Nach dem "Anschluss" Österreichs im März 1938 nahm die Verfolgung von Jüdinnen und Juden im Deutschen Reich immer mehr zu. Für viele war der einzige Ausweg die Flucht. Doch wohin? US-Präsident Franklin D. Roosevelt lud zu einer internationalen Konferenz ein, die im Juli 1938 in Evian am Genfer See stattfand. Es wurde debattiert, diniert und um Einwanderungsquoten gefeilscht. Am Ende erklärte sich kein Staat bereit, seine Grenzen für die Verfolgten zu öffnen. Durch die Novemberpogrome verschärfte sich ihre Lage dramatisch. Im Mai 1939 legte die St. Louis in Hamburg mit 937 Kindern, Frauen und Männern an Bord Richtung Kuba ab. Den Hafen von Havanna in Sichtweite wurde der St. Louis die Einfahrt verweigert. Auch die USA und Kanada lehnten die Aufnahme ab. Nach tagelangen Verhandlungen musste das Schiff beidrehen und zurück nach Europa fahren - einem ungewissen Schicksal entgegen.

    Abstract: "As German Jews emigrated in the 19th and early 20th centuries and as exiles from Nazi Germany, they carried the traditions, culture, and particular prejudices of their home with them. At the same time, Germany--and Berlin in particular--attracted both secular and religious Jewish scholars from eastern Europe. They engaged in vital intellectual exchange with German Jewry, although their cultural and religious practices differed greatly, and they absorbed many cultural practices that they brought back to Warsaw or took with them to New York and Tel Aviv. After the Holocaust, German Jews and non-German Jews educated in Germany were forced to reevaluate their essential relationship with Germany and Germanness as well as their notions of Jewish life outside of Germany. Among the first volumes to focus on German-Jewish transnationalism, this interdisciplinary collection spans the fields of history, literature, film, theater, architecture, philosophy, and theology as it examines the lives of significant emigrants. The individuals whose stories are reevaluated include German Jews Ernst Lubitsch, David Einhorn, and Gershom Scholem, the architect Fritz Nathan and filmmaker Helmar Lerski; and eastern European Jews David Bergelson, Der Nister, Jacob Katz, Joseph Soloveitchik, and Abraham Joshua Heschel--figures not normally associated with Germany. Three-Way Street addresses the gap in the scholarly literature as it opens up critical ways of approaching Jewish culture not only in Germany, but also in other locations, from the mid-19th century to the present"--

    Abstract: Honderden jaren waren Joden nadrukkelijk aanwezig in Suriname. Vanwege hun godsdienst waren ze uit Europa verdreven en naar de Nieuwe wereld getrokken waar ze zich aan de Wilde Kunst vestigden. Desperaat vanwege de vervolgingen waren ze, avontuurlijk en ondernemend. Ze werden plantage houder en handelaar. Aan de Surinamerivier hadden ze hun eigen dorp Jodensavanne. Daar konden ze door de privileges die ze kregen een eigen Joodse natie binnen de kolonie vormen. Dat was uniek inde wereld.Dankzij de met slaven gerunde plantages werden ze welvarend. In Paramaribo namen ze deel aan het koloniale bestuur, zochten naar intellectuele uitdagingen en beleden hun godsdienst in fraaie synagogen. Ook waren ze nadrukkelijk aanwezig in vrijmetselaarsloges. Net als andere kolonisten stond men zichzelf ongekende vrijheden toe. Dat ging niet allemaal zonder problemen. Het leven in de plantagekolonie was luxueus, maar vol conflicten en hard en gewelddadig ten opzichte van de slaven. Anti-Joodse gereformeerde planters hadden bezwaar tegen de privileges en waren jaloers. De uit Spanje en Portugal afkomstige Joden lagen cultureel ver uit elkaar met de Joden afkomstig uit Oost-Europa. Dat gaf voortdurend spanningen. Door het verlies van de privileges en de beëindiging van de slavernij ontstond in de loop van de negentiende eeuw een nieuwe situatie. Men vond banen in de koloniale ambtenarij, werd arts of advocaat. Voor wie die kansen niet had verslechterde de situatie. Men kreeg concurrentie van de opkomende klasse van Creolen. Velen trokken weg uit Suriname.Nu is er nog een kleine liberale Joodse gemeenschap die op heroïsche wijze moeite doet om de oeroude godsdienstige tradities te handhaven
