Abstract:
While Austrian and German antisemites at the turn of the 20th century despised Heine, refused to recognize him and his poetry as genuinely German, and opposed the erection of Heine memorials in their cities, the Jews were divided: some praised him as a German poet and entirely ignored his Jewishness; others claimed him for the Jewish people. Herzl belonged to the latter group, Nordau to the former.
