    Abstract: In 1933, as Hitler came to power, schoolteacher Anna Essinger hatched a daring and courageous plan: to smuggle her entire school out of Nazi Germany.     Abstract: "When the Nazis came to power, they used various strategies to expel German Jews from social, cultural, and economic life. Fighter, Worker, and Family Man focuses on the gendered experiences and discrimination that German-Jewish men faced between 1933 and 1941. Sebastian Huebel argues that Jewish men's gender identities, intersecting with categories of ethnicity, race, class, and age, underwent a profound process of marginalization that destabilized their accustomed ways of performing masculinity. At the same time, in their attempts to sustain their conceptions of masculinity these men maintained agency and developed coping strategies that prevented their full-scale emasculation. Huebel draws on a rich archive of diaries, letters, and autobiographies to interpret the experiences of these men, focusing on their roles as soldiers and protectors, professionals and breadwinners, and parents and husbands. Fighter, Worker, and Family Man sheds light on how the Nazis sought to emasculate Jewish men through propaganda, the law, and violence, and how in turn German-Jewish men were able to defy emasculation and adapt--at least temporarily--to their marginalized status as men."--

The documents assembled here include eyewitness testimony, oral histories, diary excerpts, literary works, trial records, and press coverage. They also contain memos and field reports authored by army officials, investigative commissions, humanitarian organizations, and government officials. Each chapter explains the origins, timing, and consequences of pogrom violence at various levels of society, as well as the lives, relationships, activities, and interactions of those groups of people that rarely appear in the historical literature. By providing a nuanced analysis of the specific geopolitical context where the violence erupted, each chapter captures the specific nature of the waves of pogroms that broke out in different regions and at different times.     Abstract: "Antisemitic stereotypes of Jews as capitalists have hindered research into the economic dimension of the Jewish past. The figure of the Jew as trader and financier dominated the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. But the economy has been central to Jewish life and the Jewish image in the world; Jews not only made money but spent money. This book is the first to investigate the intersection between consumption, identity, and Jewish history in Europe. It aims to examine the role and place of consumption within Jewish society and the ways consumerism generated and reinforced Jewish notions of belonging from the end of the eighteenth-century to the beginning of the new millennium. It shows how the advances of modernization and secularization in the modern period increased the importance of consumption in Jewish life, making it a significant factor in the process of redefining Jewish identity."

    Abstract: "This book investigates one of the major issues that runs through the history of Italian Judaism in the aftermath of emancipation: the correlation between integration, seen as the acquisition of citizenship and culture without renouncing Jewish identity, and assimilation, intended as an open refusal of Judaism of any participation in the community. On account of that correlation, identity has become one of the crucial problems in the history of the Italian Jewish community. This volume aims to discuss the setting of construction and formation--the family-- and focuses on women's experiences, specifically. Indeed, women were called through emancipation to ensure the continuity of Jewish religious and cultural heritage. It speaks to the growing interest for Women's and Gender Studies in Italy, and for the research on women's organizations which testify to the strong presence of Jewish women in the emancipation movement. These women formed a sisterhood that fought to obtain rights that were until then only accorded to men, and they were deeply socially engaged in such a way that was crucial to the overall process of the integration of Jews into Italian society"--Page 4 of cover

    Abstract: This book provides the first dedicated study of the Evian Conference of July 1938, an international initiative called by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. While on the surface the conference appeared as an attempt to alleviate the distress faced by Jews being forced out of Germany and Austria, in reality it only served to demonstrate that the nations of the world were not willing to accept Jews as refugees. Since the Holocaust, a generally-held assumption has been that the Evian Conference represented a lost opportunity to save Germany’s Jews, and that the conference failed to rescue the Jews of Europe. In this study, Paul Bartrop argues that in fact it did not fail when measured against the original reasons for which it was called. Exposing many of the myths surrounding the meeting, this work addresses a glaring lacuna in the literature of the Holocaust, and places the so-called 'failure' of the Evian Conference into its proper context.

    Abstract: Nachdem er jahrelang die Zerstörung seiner Familie im Holocaust verdrängte, beginnt der Geigenbauer Amnon Weinstein in seiner Werkstatt in Tel Aviv in den 1990er Jahren damit, Geigen zu restaurieren, die von jüdischen Musikern während des Holocausts gespielt wurden. Denn vor ihm steht ein Mann, der im Orchester von Auschwitz spielte, seine Violine über Jahrzehnte nicht angerührt hat und sie nun für seinen Enkel reparieren lassen will. Als Weinstein das Instrument öffnet, entdeckt er im Inneren Asche, die aus den Krematorien stammen muss. Grymes erzählt die Geschichte von sieben Geigen, die Weinstein in den folgenden Jahren zu neuem Glanz und Leben erweckt: Für die Musiker konnten sie ein Mittel sein, um rechtzeitig aus Europa zu fliehen, wie bei Bronislaw Hubermann, dem Gründer des Palestine Orchestra, des späteren berühmten Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Um nicht vollständig Mut und Verstand zu verlieren, wenn sie wie Erich Weininger bei seiner Odyssee nach Palästina von den Briten abgefangen und für Jahre nach Mauritius deportiert wurden. Oder wie Henry Meyer in Konzentrationslagern und Ghettos um ihr Leben spielten. Geigen konnten sogar dazu dienen, sich mit Waffen zu wehren, wie die Geschichte von Mordechai Schlein zeigt, der es schaffte, mit Hilfe eines Geigenkastens, in dem er Sprengstoff versteckte, einen Club voller SS-Offiziere in die Luft zu jagen. Und sie wurden zum einzigen Andenken an lang vermisste Verwandte, wie bei Shimon Krongeld, dessen Instrument nach seinem Tod völlig unerwartet bei seiner Familie in Jerusalem auftauchte.

Lilach Rosenberg-Friedman takes a deep and detailed look at these diverse and decisive issues, including births and abortions during this period, the discourse about birthrate, and practical attempts to implement policies to counter the low birthrate. Themes that emerge include the effect of the Holocaust, economics, ethnicity, efforts by public figures to increase birthrate, and the understanding that women in the society were viewed as entirely responsible for procreation. Providing a deep examination of the day-to-day lives of Jewish families in British Mandate Palestine, this book shows how political objectives are not only achieved by political agreements, public debates, and battlefields, but also by the activities of ordinary men, women, and families

    Abstract: "In the last two decades a large amount of previously secret documents on Jewish issues emerged from the newly opened Communist archives. The selection of these papers published in the volume and stemming mostly from Hungarian archives will shed light on a period of Jewish history that is largely ignored because much of the current scholarship treats the Shoah as the end of Jewish history in the region. The documents introduced and commented by the editor of the volume, András Kovács, will give insight into the conditions and constraints under which the Jewish communities, first of all, the largest Jewish community of the region, the Hungarian one, had to survive in the time of the post-Stalinist Communist dictatorship. They may shed light on the ways that 'Jewish policy' of the Soviet bloc countries was coordinated and orchestrated from Moscow and by the single countries. The archival material will prove that the ruling communist parties were restlessly preoccupied with the 'Jewish question.' This preoccupation, which kept the whole issue alive in the decades of communist rule, explains to a great extent its open reemergence in the time of transition and in the post-communist period"--Provided by publisher

    Abstract: "Greg Burgess's important new study explores the short life of the High Commission for Refugees (Jewish and Other) Coming from Germany, from its creation by the League of Nations in October 1933 to the resignation of High Commissioner, James G. McDonald, in December 1935. The book relates the history of the first stage of refugees from Germany through the prism of McDonald and the High Commission. It analyses the factors that shaped the Commission's formation, the undertakings the Commission embarked upon and its eventual failure owing to external complications. The League of Nations and the Refugees from Nazi Germany argues that, in spite of the Commission's failure, the refugees from Nazi Germany and the High Commission's work mark a turn in conceptions of international humanitarian responsibilities when a state defies standards of proper behaviour towards its citizens. From this point on, it was no longer considered sufficient or acceptable for states to respect the sovereign rights of another if the rights of citizens were being violated. Greg Burgess discusses this idea, amongst others, in detail as part of what is a crucial volume for all scholars and students of Nazi Germany, the Holocaust and modern Jewish history "--

Hass-Parolen auf antiisraelischen Demonstrationen in Berlin, Frankfurt, im Ruhrgebiet, einseitige Berichterstattung und Kritik an Israel in Medien, Parteien (SPD, Linke), evangelischer Kirche, unter Intellektuellen (Martin Walser, Günter Grass, Jakob Augstein "haben den Antisemitismus salonfähig gemacht"). Sie haben viele Gespräche geführt, mit einem israelischen Journalisten in Berlin oder der dortigen Leiterin des Jüdischen Museums, die von ihren Erfahrungen, Befindlichkeiten erzählen und die versuchen, eine Erklärung für den Antisemitismus im Nachkriegsdeutschland zu finden. Das Buch klärt über den in Deutschland vorhandenen Antisemitismus auf, macht die Angst der hier lebenden Juden deutlich. Für eine legitime Kritik an Israel fordern die Autoren objektive Informationsgrundlagen. Dafür bietet das Buch zu wenig: Kritik wird in Nebensätzen und verkürzt behandelt, wichtige kritische Stimmen aus Israel fehlen völlig. Zur Diskussion. (2)

    Abstract: "From 1938 until 1943 - before the German occupation and accompanying Holocaust - Fascist Italy drafted and enforced a comprehensive set of anti-Semitic laws. Notwithstanding later rationalizations, the laws were enforced and administered with a high degree of severity and resulted in serious, and in some cases permanent, damage to the Italian Jewish community. Written from the perspective of an American legal scholar, this book constitutes the first truly comprehensive survey of the Race Laws in the English language. Based on an exhaustive review of Italian legal, administrative, and judicial sources, together with archives of the Italian Jewish community, Professor Michael A. Livingston demonstrates the zeal but also the occasional ambivalence and contradictions with which the Race Laws were applied and assimilated by the Italian legal order and ordinary citizens. Although frequently depressing, the history of the Race Laws also involves numerous examples of personal courage and idealism, and provides a useful and timely study of what happens when otherwise decent people are confronted with an evil and unjust legal order"--
