Abstract: Islamic polemical literature against Judaism is typified by the repetition of ideas expressed in previous generations alongside growth and development in new directions. This article focuses on writings against Judaism by Jews who willingly converted to Islam. These converts’ texts reveal meaningful and unique characteristics that justify their being considered a subgenre of the polemical literature. This largely results from the converts’ intimate acquaintance with their forebears’ Jewish faith, thought, and rituals. This knowledge enabled them to raise new and original arguments, primary among them from Hebrew literature, which was not accessible to Muslims from birth. The article concludes with insights about the converts’ writings and the utility of identifying them as a subgenre for the study of Muslim-Jewish polemic.

Abstract: Not 3,000, but 300,000 visas were required to comply with all requests for emigration, Angelo Dell’Acqua, a member of the Roman Curia, said summarizing the so-called Brazilian Visa Project in 1940. Many people persecuted as Jews sought refuge in South America; thousands of them asked the pope and the Roman Curia for help with their emigration. The Brazilian government granted 3,000 visas on a singular basis. The new sources made accessible by the opening of the archival holdings pertaining to the pontificate of Pius XII allow us to reconstruct these cases in a detailed manner. Based on thousands of petitions written by Jewish people (which shall be published in a critical online edition at http://www.askingthepopeforhelp.de) as well as internal regulations, here analyzed for the first time, the inner-curial decision-making process is documented as a hermeneutic process reconstructing the fate of individuals, on the one hand, and providing answers to overarching questions on the other. The influence of antisemitic stereotypes about Jews and the behavior of the pope and the Curia during the Shoah are discussed. The focus of this article is on Catholics of Jewish origin, and on the question of their belonging to the Church, a subject that has been entirely underrepresented in research until today.

Abstract: The self-proclaimed atheist Jean-Paul Sartre portrayed the human being as a Dieu manqué, a »wannabe God.« His understanding of God, however, was limited to the philosophical notion of a self-grounded being, an ens causa sui. Many Zoharic texts, by contrast, depict seemingly interminable intra-divine, as well as human, struggles for unification that converge with Sartrean portrayals. Such texts, particularly those concerned with the divine relation to death, may be viewed as portraying the divine itself as a Dieu manqué. The juxtaposition of these Zoharic texts about human and divine souls with the Sartrean depiction of »human reality« provides unexpected reciprocal illumination – even in the face of Scholem's strictures against "existentialism"

Abstract: The doctrinal continuum between ancestral merits and rewards and punishments is well established in Second Temple Judaism and is discernible in John 8–9. Following Philo of Alexandria’s questioning of these doctrinal correlates, the Johannine chapters are subjected to a theological-rhetorical analysis focused on the transitional passage (9:1–5). The passage is here seen not as an introduction to a new theme but as corollary to the preceding chapter(s), having a duo-directional significance, linking a two-part refutation of invariably related doctrines: ancestral merits and rewards and punishments. The rejection or refutation of the latter affirms the rejection or refutation of the former, and vice versa. The Johannine chapters in question have a thematic and dialectical connection; they constitute a substantial part of the broader, interrelated polemic of the Fourth Gospel.

Abstract: In many churches nowadays, there has been a standardized approach to premarital counseling for couples involving social, pastoral, and psychological perspectives. In contrast, many rabbis and other Jewish officials still concentrate on legal aspects alone. The need for resolving important issues on the verge of wedlock is too often left to secular experts in law, psychology, or counseling. However, in recent years, this lack of formal training for marriage preparation has also been acknowledged by the Jewish clergy in order to incorporate it in the preparatory period before the bond is tied. This case study focuses on Jewish and Roman Catholic conceptions of marriage, past and present. We intend to do a comparative analysis of the prerequisites of religious marriage based on the assumption that both Judaism and the Roman Catholic Church have a distinct legal framework to assess marriage preparation.

Abstract: This paper examines the depiction of Jewish and Christian merchants in the medieval English Host miracle play, the Croxton Play of the Sacrament. This play is a critical illustration of religious racialization, effectively demonstrating the perpetuation of anti-Jewish stereotypes and legitimizing violence. Positioned within a broader scholarly debate, particularly in relation to Augustine’s doctrine of Jewish witness, the play portrays Jews as allegorical figures that validate Christian theological constructs. This paper delves into the representation and linguistic depiction of Jewish characters in the play, emphasizing their systematic dehumanization and instrumentalization in Christian narratives. A significant focus is placed on the coerced conversion of Jewish characters, which forces them into the archetype of the “Wandering Jew”, thereby highlighting motifs of symbolic aggression and unending diaspora. This paper also confronts contemporary scholarly perspectives that view the play as challenging religious boundaries, positing that such interpretations overlook the ingrained racialization and marginalization of Jewish identity during the European Middle Ages. It argues that the play’s transient disruption of power dynamics ultimately reinforces prevailing social hierarchies, thereby solidifying deep-seated anti-Jewish sentiments.

Abstract: Deuteronomy 23:3, says: “No … Moabite may enter the assembly of the Lord”. This verse is motivated by a discriminatory tendency embedded in the ontology of the Deuteronomist. Interestingly, Deuteronomy 23:3 was used by Ezra-Nehemiah to discriminate against the “Moabites” during the Second Temple. Such ontology is countered by the author of Ruth in the narrative of Ruth during the Second Temple. This demonstrates an ontological “war” within the Bible itself. The primary contestation lies in whether God is exclusive or inclusive. This development necessitates a hermeneutics of suspicion. In the course of history, the “theology” of Deuteronomy has been used to grossly violate the human dignity of many God-fearing African people and many other people of the South for colonial purposes. To exacerbate the situation, there were persistent attempts from some quarters to universalise such a discriminatory biblical perspective. This would feed into the centre–periphery arrangement, with the centre feeding the periphery with such hermeneutics. For this reason, African scholars are implored to be very vigilant against ardent pressures put on the biblical texts by ontological, epistemological, and contextual biases of interpretations. Accordingly, Andrew Mbuvi identifies African Biblical Hermeneutics perfectly when he says it seeks to undo “the very construct of the ‘centre-periphery’ binary by allowing the possibility of multiple centres”). Kenneth Ngwa, thus, rightly asserts that African Biblical Hermeneutics considers African epistemologies and conditions “to be invaluable and legitimate contexts and resources in biblical interpretation”), drinking from our own wells). In consequence, this paper intends to set a dialogue between Deuteronomy 23:3 and Ruth 4:18–22. This paper aims to examine the understanding of God behind these verses. This paper will then compare the two theologies with the African philosophical concept of God. Harnessing the African concept of Ubuntu, this paper will de-ideologise the two texts and thus will provide a recommendation concerning the two texts.

Abstract: This paper will demonstrate that the best descriptor of Qohelet is divine hedonist, not absurdist, skeptic, pessimist, realist, nihilist or “Preacher of Joy.” This will be done by examining the relationship between Qohelet’s hebel-judgments and his carpe diem ethic and comparing Qohelet’s strategy with that of philosopher David Hume. Qohelet’s hebel-judgments serve to deconstruct the traditional formulation of the Tun-Ergehen-Zusammenhang, opening space for legitimating his preferred ethic: the carpe diem. In other words, Qohelet rhetorically paints a dark and dreary world in order to buttress his main ethic, the carpe diem, an ethic that is both hedonistic (using philosophical classification) in seeking pleasure and avoiding pain (reflected in his God-fearing motif), and divine in that this ethic must align with God’s mysterious decrees.

Abstract: Mother Earth is home to an unprecedented number of translations of the Bible, making it the most widely translated book in the world. The pages of this book have traversed a variety of physical and metaphorical borders, navigating diverse geographical, political, economic, cultural, linguistic, and religious intersections. Across space, time, and cultures, millions of readers have found various reasons to read it through diverse lenses. The Bible was frequently translated and brought to the colonized territories with colonial movements. Regrettably, it was often utilized as a tool for subjugation and dominance. However, the colonized people also used this resource for their own goals. Do contemporary biblical studies have the courage to look upon the tomes and tons of translated Bibles lying upon the surface of Mother Earth? What responsibilities and opportunities does the Global Translated Bible(s) lay upon academic biblical studies? What research questions, challenges, and opportunities for collaboration does it open? What are the pedagogical obligations and implications of acknowledging the Global Translated Bible(s)? In other words, what does faithfulness and unfaithfulness to the translated biblical corpus entail, imply, and demand? This lecture proposes and emphasizes the imperative of mainstreaming the Global Translated Bible(s) into academic biblical studies.

Abstract: In Christian tradition, Paul is the apostle to the nations. However, his portrayal in the Book of Acts is more nuanced. For a longer period, Paul's ministry is limited to Jews. Only from Acts 13 onwards does Paul slowly emerge as ministering to non-Jews. Yet even then, Paul remains foremost an emissary to diaspora Judaism. In its apology for Paul and his disputed way of including non-Jews into the people of God, Acts emphasises that Paul did so without diminishing the priority of Israel, as a staunch proponent of Jewish monotheism and in a way that took full account of the precarious situation of diaspora Judaism.

Abstract: This article examines how Jews and Judaism are envisioned in the Catholic imagination, through a critical reading of contemporary Catholic discourse on Judaism. It identifies three problematic areas. The first concerns the tendency of Catholic discourse to project a specifically Christian vision of salvation history onto the Jewish people, which reflects Christian rather than Jewish self-understanding. Second, this article analyzes patterns in language and imagery in Vatican documents about Judaism, alert to troubling allusions implicit in the texts. The third area concerns a hermeneutical obstacle to deep interreligious understanding, one which may be ultimately insurmountable: namely, the challenges of understanding the religious other according to its own self-understanding. This article reaches an ambivalent conclusion, conceding that the goal of recognizing the self-understanding of another religious tradition may ultimately be impossible.

Abstract: In the personal credo that prefaces his Decem libri historiarum, Gregory of Tours states his belief in an Antichrist who would impose circumcision upon his subjects. While Gregory did not invent this theme of a circumcising Antichrist, it nevertheless closely mirrored his own eschatological anxieties. Physical circumcision was, for Gregory, an unmistakable indicator of Judaism and the Old Law. The Bishop of Tours was deeply concerned about the Jews of his own time, whose obstinate refusal to acknowledge Christian truth he perceived as an obstacle to his socio-religious ideal of a unified Christian society. While Gregory did not necessarily believe that the End Times would arrive during his own lifetime, he saw signa of its inevitability everywhere, and consequently encouraged readiness on the part of his contemporaries. The Antichrist’s imposition of compulsory circumcision thus implied for Gregory the culmination of an ongoing effort by Jews to inhibit Christian unity.

Abstract: "Three Faces of Antisemitism examines the three primary forms of antisemitism as they emerged in modern and contemporary Germany, and then in other countries. Essays draw on the author's historical scholarship over the years on the form antisemitism assumed on the far right in Weimar and Nazi Germany, in the Communist regime in East Germany, and in the West German radical left, and in Islamist organizations during World War II and the Holocaust, and afterwards in the Middle East. The resurgence of antisemitism since the attacks of September 11, 2001 has origins in the ideas, events and circumstances in Europe and the Middle East in the half century from the 1920s to the 1970s. This book covers the period since 1945 when neo-Nazism was on the fringes of Western and world politics, and the persistence of antisemitism took place primarily when its leftist and Islamist forms combined antisemitism with anti-Zionism in attacks on the state of Israel. The collection includes recent essays of commentary that draw attention to the simultaneous presence of antisemitism's three faces. While scholarship on the antisemitism of the Nazi regime and the Holocaust remains crucial, the scholarly, intellectual and political effort to fight antisemitism in our times requires examination of antisemitism's leftist and Islamist forms as well. Abstract: This ethnographic chapter is about alternative (non-Orthodox) funeral rituals in Israel, from the post-secular and post-modern perspectives. I trace the major components of non-Orthodox funeral rites in Israel. I propose to view them as a novel type of post-secular, post-modern ritual, which combines components associated with the meta-categories of religion and secularism, rather than exchanging one set for another. The new alternative ritual in Israel entails hybridization of canonic religious prayers and appeals to God with components devoid of religious connotation and even conveying an unequivocally anti-religious message, such as a secular Kaddish, poems and songs of famous Israeli and world poets and singers. My second claim is that in the frame of alternative rituals, the canonic and static repertoire of the Jewish Orthodox funeral is replaced by the new, more flexible repertoire of literary creativity including pieces from modern Hebrew and world poetry. These transformations in funeral rituals reflect multiple changes occurring in Israeli society: the trends toward post-modernism, post-secularism, feminism and the changing status of women; and growing individualism reflecting the increased presence of Western individualist ideas in Israel. The mass immigration from the secular (former) Soviet Union, economic growth in the context of globalization, a neoliberal shift since the 2000s, an expansion of consumerism, and new demands for recognition by non-Orthodox groups, all enabled the emergence of dramatic changes in the area of alternative funerals.

Still, when examining the possible effect of Jewish rituals and practices that help people to cope with body image concerns, faith and media exposure were found to have a potential mediating effect. With regard to modesty, although a highly relevant construct when studying both Jewish rituals and practices and body image, no evidence was found for such an association, though more research is clearly needed. These findings highlight the potential protective factor religion may play in the creation of body image satisfaction among Jewish women. Limitations of current research as well as implications and future research directions are discussed.

Abstract: The use of Hebrew in liturgical and ritual contexts may be traced back to the earliest origins of the Jewish people. The various linguistic genres employed for aspects of worship in the prophetic period were expanded in the Second Temple period when there was competition from Aramaic and Greek and influences from the Hellenistic world. The liturgical language of the Talmudic rabbis differed from that of the Qumran texts and Biblical Hebrew and itself underwent changes in the Geonic era, especially in the light of the powerful emergence of the novel register represented by the piyyuṭim. There was considerable controversy in the Middle Ages about whether the language of prayer should follow the biblical precedent or that of the rabbis, and a host of innovative language entered by way of the mystical dimension. The concern of many Jewish Hebraists in the modern world was that Jews should use beautiful and pure language for their worship and omit anything irrational or indecorous. When composing their Jewish prayer books, the various modern religious movements responded in different ways to the linguistic challenge but their responses altered with the events of the Holocaust and the establishment of the State of Israel.

Abstract: In the complex “parting of the ways” between the early Jesus movement and its Jewish roots, Christianity both preserved and abandoned Jewish rituals. The multi-faceted nature of such reception appears throughout early Christian literature, but this study particularly focuses upon the Book of Acts and the Apostolic Fathers. The essay examines the early Christian reception of prayer, temple worship, Sabbath observance, liturgy and Scripture reading, ritual washing, casting of lots, almsgiving and charity, burial, laying on of hands, kashrut, fasting, shaking off of dust, circumcision, vows, and head shaving. These specific investigations within Acts and the Apostolic Fathers amply reflect both the adoption of existing Jewish rituals and the adaptation and even rejection of previous Jewish traditions.

Abstract: The contrast between the Jewish ethical tradition and many other faith (and legal) traditions is worth focusing on. The Jewish tradition has a sexual ethic that is quite vibrant. It prohibits incest, adultery, rape – even marital rape, and recognizes that marriage has both a reproductive and a companionship justification. But yet, the Jewish tradition never fully embraced a deep and theological prohibition on polygamy and never fully endorsed any deep prohibition against non-marital sexuality. Of course, neither of these are still overtly present in the traditional Jewish community, but this chapter explores the parameters of models of sexuality in the Jewish tradition within the historical, religious, and theological models found in classical Talmudic Judaism.

Abstract: Since the resettlement of the Sephardim in the Ottoman Empire and Austro-Hungary following their expulsions from Iberia and into the modern era, Judezmo or Ladino, the distinctive Jewish language of the group often known today as the ‘Ottoman Sephardim’ or more broadly, ‘Ottoman Jewry,’ has played a key role in its speakers’ practice of Jewish ritual and religious life. The chapter offers a panoramic overview of that role. Basing itself on primary rabbinical and periodical sources in Judezmo and Hebrew as well as the extensive research literature on the language and culture of Judezmo speakers, the chapter analyzes the centrality of Judezmo among the Ottoman Sephardim as a language of sacred-text translation (e.g., Biblical, Mishnaic and Hebrew liturgical texts), paraliturgical literary creativity (e.g., original songs, rhyming couplets, hymns and dirges enriching celebrations of the calendar and life cycle), and language of holiday and life cycle event greetings, blessings, proverbs and sayings. Passages from Judezmo literature, in the original language and in translation, exemplify how the group’s rabbis and journalists related to Jewish religious ritual and custom, and commented on the decline of the traditional religious lifestyle under the influence of Western European liberal humanism from the beginning of the modern era. The chapter ends with some observations on the current Judezmo language and culture revival and suggests that this development may inspire a resuscitation of long-abandoned traditional religious ritual practices including some in which Judezmo played a central vital role.

Abstract: This paper considers the question of Zion and the Diaspora pragmatically, as a question concerning the conditions necessary to ensure the continued existence of the Jewish people. My overall goal is to show that because of the differences between Jewish life in the State of Israel and the contemporary Diaspora, there is a strong difference in the challenges that confront Israeli and Diaspora Jewry; but that because of a common past (for which the adjective "Jewish" can be applied to both) on the one hand, and the global implications of the digital revolution, on the other, even these differences are rooted in a shared problematic. The first phase of discussion demonstrates that while the prevailing tendency to see the question of Zion and the Diaspora as a political one often focuses solely on contemporary issues concerning Jewish existence, a cultural view requires consideration of the past and future as well. Following this, I discuss the question of Zion and the Diaspora through the generations, noting that the continuation of Jewish life in the Land of Israel as well as in the Diaspora has historically depended upon the "midrashic" method of interpretation when confronting the junction between the diachronic and synchronic aspects of Jewish life, in order to mediate the influences coming from within and from without.The paper then considers the implications of these findings with respect to two of the major revolutions in Jewish life of the modern and contemporary periods: the effects of emancipation and the digital revolution. The final section of the paper discusses the challenges facing the existence of the Jewish people in the contemporary Diaspora and State of Israel. Here I argue that Zionism has succeeded in reconstructing, within the State of Israel, a Jewish society that carries a much greater potential for the continued existence of the Jews as a people than is possible in the Diaspora, but that because of the contemporary state of human affairs in general, it still has much to learn from Diaspora Jewry.

Abstract: Before the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Rabbi Aharon Mendel HaKohen indefatigably promoted a program of reconvening the Sanhedrin and resuming semikha – the historical form of rabbinical ordination that entailed “laying of hands.” Holding a rabbinical post in Cairo, he observed a diminishing status of the community rabbi, caused, he thought, by the growing Zionist idea. To restore rabbinic power, he wished to establish an association of rabbis that would serve as a Jewish authority for the election of the Sanhedrin and the resumption of semikha. By examining Rabbi Mendel’s view, along with those of other rabbis of his age, including Rabbi Mordechai HaKohen and Rabbi Eliyahu Bechor Chazan, this article provides an important perspective on a central issue of the period of the emergence and growth of Zionist ideology.

Abstract: The defeat of the Labour Party in the 2019 general election in Britain has put to rest the tumultuous “Corbyn Affair” (2015–2019). Whether Labour under Corbyn has been “overrun by anti-Semitism or other forms of racism” or, in the words of the Chakrabarti report, polluted by an “occasionally toxic atmosphere” has been hotly debated. Yet the “affair” above all symbolized the crisis of Europe’s postwar philosemitism: the official repudiation and reprobation of antisemitism in mainstream politics; a shift from enmity to partnership in Christian approaches to Judaism; the rise of a positive image of the Jews as symbol of conservative values or post-national European cosmopolitanism; the duty of Shoah remembrance and official atonement; and despite the rise of virulent anti-Zionism in Europe since 1967, the containment of anti-Israeli criticism within the framework of a two-state solution. Hostility toward Jews, to be sure, never disappeared, but philosemitism broadly conceived has redefined the relationship between contemporary Europe and its Jews. The “Corbyn Affair” challenged the terms of this postwar history: the controversy indeed signaled the possible end of Europe’s postwar philosemitic moment.

Abstract: In May 2016, the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) adopted a Working Definition of Antisemitism. The definition has, on the one hand, been widely adopted by national governments, public agencies, local authorities, political parties, and other civil society organizations. It has, on the other hand, been hotly disputed in academic circles and in the public square. In this essay, I evaluate both the text in itself and the uses to which predominantly it is put. I conclude, first, that it does not pass muster as a definition: it is neither clear nor coherent nor sound. Second, not only does it fail to set limits to legitimate speech about Zionism and the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, but it lends itself to partisan use by one side in the public debate. I conclude by briefly introducing an alternative document, the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism, which sets out to reclaim the word ‘antisemitism’ and to depoliticize it by lifting it above the fray of the public debate.

Abstract: This contribution deals with the medieval tradition of producing manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible alongside with the Aramaic paraphrase (the Targum) and/or exegetical commentaries or any other type of works related to the Hebrew text of the Bible. Such medieval manuscripts are referred to here as ‘glossed Hebrew Bibles’, and they are identified as precedents - in terms of layout and organization of contents - for Bomberg’s and Ibn Hayyim’s Biblia Rabbinica and for other editions of the mikra’ot gedolot. Differences are explored in the glossed Hebrew Bibles produced in the medieval Jewish geocultural areas of Sepharad, Ashkenaz and Italy, in order to allow to describe different traditions of selecting texts and layouts, and to determine what the role of exegetical traditions was in the selection of commentaries. The layout of the Biblia Rabbinica is then analysed in light of the earlier manuscript tradition, revealing both continuities as well as some innovations.

Abstract: The biblical pandects produced under the supervision of Bishop Theodulf of Orleans (d. 821) between 799 and 818 attest to the vitality of biblical studies during the Carolingian Renaissance. Five Theodulfian Bibles and fragments of two additional manuscripts have come down to us: these manuscripts share common codicological and palaeographical features. The homogeneous, consistently applied, editorial choices illustrate Theodulf’s high scholarly ambition and his efforts to restore the Hebraica veritas, which was the text established by Jerome. These manuscripts are pandects (that is, copied in a single volume) with a particularly clear page layout, which facilitates reading and browsing within the volume. The manuscripts present a stable architecture: the order of the biblical books and the textual apparatus (poems, forewords, tables, and textual aids placed in appendices) were repeated from one volume to the next, with, however, slight variations which reveal Theodulf’s continuous efforts. This apparatus was supplemented by marginal notes placed next to the text within the various biblical books. The number of these notes increased as the editing work progressed: in the first Bibles produced they attest to comparisons of the biblical text established by Theodulf with other Latin manuscripts, while in the chronologically last two Bibles they point to comparisons with the Hebrew text, which was a unique undertaking for the Carolingian period. This paper reviews the state of our knowledge about these Theodulfian Bibles and outlines some avenues of research.

Abstract: This article explores complementary dimensions of Jewish diversity in Israel. In the past two decades Jews have evolved in polarising directions: whereas the fringes of ultra-Orthodox and the secular widened, the traditional middle narrowed. Within each sector, religious identification across an individual's life cycle is dynamic, with the ultra-Orthodox and religious bolstering their religiosity and the secular and traditional moving away from any religious patterns. Alongside some significant differences among the religious sectors in attitudes and behaviours, such as the importance of being Jewish or the observance of ongoing rituals, there are broad consensuses on matters of belonging to the Jewish people, the importance of remembering the Holocaust, and the celebration of the major Jewish holidays. Still, Israeli society sees disagreements over values and institutions that the state should maintain, and over tension between Judaism and democracy. The discussion assesses differences in religious identity between Israel and Europe and the implications of this for European Jewry.

Abstract: The rabbis considered that a ‘pathology of speech’ in humans brought about the Biblical Flood. Lockdown has reminded us of new threats to our future. In the language of science, positivist certainties have given way to quantum probabilities, often expressed reductively as data. The data-driven society maintains the illusion of individual freedom, while concentrating power in the hands of the few, subjecting the diversity of the many to a standardised norm. The sages also sought to apply a single rule for all, but honoured diversity by training in the art of making careful distinctions. Recent neurological research views the brain as formed by the bodily needs of survival and the common culture of the group. The evolution of language is better understood as the application of conceptual metaphor to the governance of individual and community. This fits well with the rabbis’ understanding of how the misuse of language endangers our collective well-being.

Abstract: Islamophobia and antisemitism are two forms of racism that have much in common. The racialisation targets not just a religion or religious group but what is better understood as an ethnoreligious group. The ways that Jews and Muslims oppose such racism increasingly involves the building up of an identity which, like most contemporary equality movements, does not simply reject the one attributed to them by their enemies but a positive replacement. Such positive conceptions can become oppressor identities, as is the case of certain Islamist identities fostered by the likes of Isis or with a Jewish identity centred on Israel. Moreover, the politics of defining these racisms is tied to competition about prioritisation between anti-racisms. This should be based on an empirical evaluation of the scale of the respective racisms (and not on an essentialised hierarchy). Unfortunately, in the case of Islamophobia and antisemitism today, there is a wilful empirical blindness, and the prioritisation is taking place on the basis of which victim group is more influential and has more influential friends. Finally, we must be able to critically talk about groups like Muslims and Jews, about Islam and Israel, without being dismissed as Islamophobes or antisemites. For this to be the case, ‘talk about’ must become ‘talk with’: the character of the criticism must take a dialogical form. I conclude by including a sketch of five tests for distinguishing racialisation from dialogical criticism.

Abstract: One of the methods of multicultural societies for advancing a shared society is cross-cultural teaching. Commonly, teachers from the majority group apply to teaching at the majority's schools through the acculturation process. The current study, however, illuminates the understudied situation, in which teachers of the Jewish majority group in Israel teach at the Arab minority's schools. Our findings indicate that these Jewish teachers are mostly motivated by their ideology and moral values, mainly a yearning to bridge between two hostile societies. These teachers' integration into the minority's schools is challenging due to cultural differences, lack of familiarity with Arabic, and difficulties introducing informal pedagogy, that is not common in Arab schools, discipline problems among students, and a challenging national-political discourse.

Abstract: In this article, I examine the Hebrew translation of the four Gospels published in 1668 by Giovanni Battista Iona, a convert from Judaism employed as a professional Hebraist in several Catholic institutions in Rome. I focus, first, on Iona's aims in undertaking this work: to come closer to a presumed Hebrew original of the Gospels; to rebut Jewish polemics against Christianity; to bring about the conversion of Jews by showing that the Gospels are akin to the Hebrew Bible. Second, I analyse Iona's translation technique and shed light on the sources he used (both Latin and Hebrew), on the kind of Hebrew he employed and on some specific choices he made. Finally, I tie Iona's thinking and method of work to his particular status as a 'convert Christian Hebraist'.

Abstract: The "Society of Learners" is an accepted research model that explains communal, religious, and sociological features among Lithuanian and Mizrahi communities in Israel. This model has become increasingly challenging for many ultra-Orthodox men and women. In this article we discuss reactions to the society of learners model as a motive for the establishment of the ultra-Orthodox feminist movement that was created in anticipation of the 2013 Knesset elections, and examine its role in the establishment of the movement. Through semi-structured, in-depth interviews we asked fifteen ultra-Orthodox women whether the model was a factor in the formation of ultra-Orthodox feminism and found three central motifs in their responses: a woman's place in the life of the individual and the repercussions of this model on the life of ultra-Orthodox women; the value of Torah study and resistance to the society of learners as an exclusive model; and lastly, the economic consequences of the model. This study adds a new facet to the theory of the society of learners and supports other studies of women from minority groups as agents of preservation and change. Hence, it contributes a better understanding of the ultra-Orthodox feminist movement in Israel which developed less than a decade ago.

Abstract: This article describes and analyzes the methods of Footprints: Jewish Books Through Time and Place, a digital humanities contribution to book history. Footprints collects and aggregates information about the movement of copies of Hebrew books and books of Judaica in other languages printed in the early modern period (roughly corresponding to the hand-press era) and follows evidence of their movement into the twenty-first century. It stores this information in a relational database in which users can run specific queries and delivers the results in a number of visual representations for analysis and interpretation. Footprints undertakes two concurrent and more open-ended aims: (1) the on-going assemblage of a dataset about post-print mobility based on evidence other than the printed text (e.g. marginalia, catalog records, archival letters, other printed texts); and (2) the creation and iterative refining of a scholarly instrument to analyze the dataset through computational methods and modes of representation.

Abstract: Previous research on the Teachings of Silvanus has led to the generally accepted conclusion that the present form of the work is the result of a long textual development. Because of the text’s close relationship with the biblical and Hellenistic-Jewish Wisdom literature, it has been suggested that its earliest form was a Jewish sapiential writing, which over a long period of time was Christianised by the addition of New Testament material and Christian theological speculations. In the present study, the problem of the Teachings’ textual development is approached from a literary analysis of the text. It is argued that the work contains many instances of parallelismus membrorum, which in some cases are closely interwoven with biblical and Jewish sapiential texts and in other cases are abruptly broken up by Christian interpolations.

Abstract: The recent war in Europe, the Ukraine–Russia war, has had a huge impact in the lives of millions of people in the European continent—in the lives of both those who have fled the conflict and of those who have welcomed them with open arms. In this paper, we conduct a philosophical investigation into the issue of hospitality to others, to strangers, to foreigners trying to understand this phenomenon taking place in Europe, and elsewhere. First, we investigate the Jewish Mitzvah of Hospitality by referring to two passages in the Torah that exemplify hospitality and one that instantiates its opposite, hostility to the other, to strangers and foreigners. Following from this, we provide a discussion on Jewish ethics and its deontological and virtue ethics connections. In the last section, we engage with a discussion connecting the field of education and the matter of hospitality.

Abstract: This paper argues for a new understanding of the Qur’an’s view of Jews and Christians based, firstly, on their developing role in Qur’anic discourse, and, secondly, on the Qur’an’s continuous understanding of the three designations for Jews and Christians: banū isrāʾīl, “the children of Israel,” ahl al-kitāb, “the Scripture People,” and al-yahūd wa-l-naṣārā, “the Jews and the Christians.” Whereas there is a scholarly consensus that the term ahl al-kitāb designates both Jews and Christians, I offer two correctives: first, the term banū isrāʾīl equally designates the Qur’an’s Jewish and Christian contemporaries (or, more often, their common ancestors), and, second, the predominantly collective usage of al-yahūd wa-l-naṣārā shows that the three designations for Jews and Christians most be understood both in their continuity and in the increasing internal differentiation of Jews and Christians from each other.
