    Abstract: "Le projet de rédiger l'inventaire des documents consistoriaux concernant l'histoire du judaïsme algérien est né en 1979 sous l'impulsion de Gérard Nahon et soutenu par l'Institut Ben Zvi de l'Université Hébraïque de Jérusalem. Richard Ayoun a accompli la tâche colossale de rechercher, d'étudier ces archives en France, en Israël, aux États-Unis et en Algérie, de les dépouiller, les analyser et les répertorier avec rigueur, patience et détermination. Cet inventaire analytique des archives consistoriales des Juifs d'Algérie, depuis la conquête française en 1830 jusqu'à «la séparation des Églises et de l'État» en 1905, procure un accès direct au plus important ensemble de documents existants sur le sujet, les archives propres aux communautés d'Algérie ayant pratiquement disparu en 1962 dans la tourmente de l'exode. L'ouvrage couvre l'évolution du statut des Juifs d'Algérie ainsi que leur vie professionnelle, sociale, religieuse et culturelle. Le complète une bibliographie d'une extrême richesse étendue à des périodiques locaux aujourd'hui malaisément accessibles, pourvue d'une liste alphabétique des articles par auteurs et par titres. La période noire du judaïsme algérien durant la vague antisémite de la fin du XIXe siècle et l'Affaire Dreyfus, y apparaît sous un jour saisissant: vision au quotidien de la violence, de la haine suinant des articles de L'antisémite algérien (1897-1898), de son avatar le Nouvel Antisémite algérien (1898-1899),... Par delà l'objectif scientifique de l'auteur, demeurent la nécessité, la volonté, l'exigence, de retrouver la mémoire perdue des communautés juives algériennes, de la restituer, de la perpétuer. Ce livre se place dans la lignée des travaux archivistiques majeurs des XIXe et XXe siècles."--

    Abstract: "The Souls of Jewish Folk argues that late nineteenth century Germany's struggle with its 'Jewish question' - what to do with Germany's Jews, served as an important and to date underexamined influence on W.E.B. Du Bois's considerations of America's anti-Black racism at the turn of the twentieth century. Du Bois's well-known characterization of the twentieth century's greatest challenge, "the problem of the color line", is actually haunted by the specter of the German Jew. What The Souls of Jews? asks readers to take seriously, then, is how our ideas, and indeed intellectual work itself, is shaped by and embedded within the networks of people, places, and prevailing contexts of its time. The major social, political, and economic events of Du Bois's own life - including his time spent living and learning in a late nineteenth century Germany defined in no small part by its violent antisemitism - comprises the soil from which his most serious ideas about race, racism, and the global color line spring forth."

    Abstract: Gennady Estraikh's book explores the birth, growth, demise and afterlife of the Birobidzhan Jewish Autonomous Region (JAR). The History of Birobidzhan looks at how the shtetl was widely used in Soviet propaganda as a perfect solution to the 'Jewish question', arguing that in reality, while being demographically and culturally insignificant, the JAR played a key, and essentially detrimental, role in determining Jewish rights and entitlements in the Soviet world. Estraikh brings together a broad range of Russian and Yiddish sources, including archival materials, newspaper articles, travelogues, memoirs, belles-letters, and scholarly publications, as he describes and analyses the project and its realization not in isolation, but rather in the context of developments in both domestic and international life. As well as offering an assessment of the Birobidzhan project in the contexts of Soviet and Jewish history, the book also focuses on the contemporary 'Jewish' role of the region which now has only a few thousand Jewish occupants amongst its residents

    Abstract: "Readers of the Hebrew Bible know the basic story line: during the early sixth century BCE the Bablonian ruler Nebuchadnezzar sacked Jerusalem, deported a portion of the population to Mesopotamia, and triggered a crisis of faith in the minds of prophets, priests, and liturgists that still echoes through the centuries. Though many Judahites chose to make their way home under Persian imperial control, the straightforward biblical story of exile and return masks many complex issues of evidence and fact. Unlike previous studies that focused narrowly on Babylonian exile of the Judahite elites, this volume widens the geographical and temporal scope to include the Assyrian, Babylonian, and Persian Empires. Improved access to and understanding of relevant texts, iconography, and material culture provide an opportunity for scholars to reappraise methods of imperial controla nd the responses of those in exile and under occupation. Contributors Pamela Barmash, Ryan P. Bonfiglio, Caralie Cooke, Lisbeth S. Fried, Martien A. Halvorson-Taylor, Mark W. Hamilton, Matt Waters, and Ian D. Wilson lay a firm foundation for future work on the long sixth century.

    Abstract: "Baghdadi Jewish Networks in the Age of Nationalism traces the participation of Baghdadi Jews in Jewish transnational networks from the mid-nineteenth century until the mass exodus of Jews from Iraq between 1948 and 1951.     Abstract: Als Marina Weisband ihre Followerschaft bei Twitter fragte, was sie so am Judentum interessiere, wurde sie mit Fragen überschüttet. Angesichts der Fülle an Themen holte sie sich Unterstützung von Eliyah Havemann. Zusammen beschlossen sie, die Fragen zunächst in der Videoreihe #FragEinenJuden bei YouTube und dann - in erweiterter Form - in einem Buch zu beantworten. Entstanden ist eine so lebendige und anschauliche Annäherung an das Judentum, wie es keine trockene Einführung zu vermitteln vermag. Denn sie listen keine Fakten auf, sondern tauschen sich aus und sprechen jeweils aus ihrer eigenen Perspektive: Marina Weisband als gläubige, nicht religiöse Jüdin und Eliyah Havemann als modern-orthodoxer Jude. Nicht immer sind sie sich einig - und genau das spiegelt die Vielfalt des Judentums. Es geht darum, wer Juden eigentlich sind, um die Religion allgemein, um religiöse Strömungen, um die jüdische Kultur und das Zusammenleben und nicht zuletzt um Antisemitismus

For nearly a century, Jewish lawyers and advocacy groups in Western Europe and the United States pioneered forms of international rights protection, tying the defense of Jews to norms and rules that aspired to curb the worst behavior of rapacious nation-states. In the wake of the Holocaust and the creation of the State of Israel, however, Jewish activists discovered they could no longer promote the same norms, laws and innovations without fear they could soon apply to the Jewish state.     Abstract: This book charts the diachronic dimension of the processes by which Andalusi Muslim and Jewish elites created, asserted, refined, and adapted to new circumstances their respective claims of Andalusi and Sefardi singularity. The historical starting point for this inquiry-the mid-tenth century-is established by the textual evidence that has come down to us. The endpoint of this study's historical parameters is occasioned by social, religious, and political upheaval, collective trauma, and their jarring effects on cultural memory. For the Jews of Sefarad, the mid-twelfth century witnessed disruption within Andalusi Jewish society and transformation of its traditions. It saw the dispersal of most of the Jews of al-Andalus to the Iberian Christian kingdoms, to Provence, and to North Africa, where Andalusi Jewish exiles found refuge and Andalusi Jewish cultural production was relaunched in modified forms. For Andalusi Muslims, the Almohad military defeat at Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212, known in Arabic historiography as the monumental Battle of al-'Iqāb, and the Almohads' ensuing withdrawal from Andalusi territory signaled the end of the classical age of al-Andalus. Within a generation, Córdoba and Seville fell to Castilian control, leaving the Naṣrid kingdom of Granada-all that was left of al-Andalus-as the sole remaining outpost of an Islamic polity and society on Iberian soil down to 1492

    Abstract: "Revolutionary Visions examines recent cinematic depictions of Jewish involvement in 1960s and 1970s revolutionary movements in Latin America. In order to explore the topic, the book bridges critical theory on religion, politics, and hegemony from regional Latin American, national, and global perspectives. Placing these theories in dialogue with recent films, the author asks the following questions: How did revolutionary commitment change Jewish community and families in twentieth-century Latin America? How did Jews contribute to revolutionary causes and what is the place of Jews in the legacies of revolutionary movements? How is film used to project self-representations of Jewish communities in the national project for a mainstream audience? Jewish involvement in revolutionary movements is rife with contradictions. On the one hand, it was a natural progression of patterns of political participation, based on the ideological affinities shared between Socialist movements and Marxist revolutionary politics. On the other hand, involvement in revolutionary politics would also upset the status quo of Jewish communities due to the extreme nature of revolutionary practices (e.g. guerrilla warfare), revolutionary groups' alignment with Palestine, and the assimilation into non-Jewish culture that revolutionary involvement often entailed. These contradictions between Jewish self-identification and revolutionary activity continue to confound cultural understandings of the points of contact between identities and political affinities. In this way, Revolutionary Visions contributes to timely debates within cultural studies surrounding identities and politics."--

Jahrhundert zum Protestantismus konvertierten jüdischen Familie war er in Deutschland in größter Gefahr. Deshalb schickten seine Eltern den zehnjährigen Georges-Arthur und seinen älteren Bruder Erich 1938 zuerst nach Italien. Im folgenden Jahr flüchteten sie weiter nach Frankreich. Im Internat in Annecy war Goldschmidt ebenfalls traumatisierender Gewalt ausgesetzt. Schließlich versteckten ihn Bergbauern in Savoyen bis zum Kriegsende und retteten dadurch sein Leben. Goldschmidts Werk ist zutiefst geprägt vom Gefühl existentieller Ortlosigkeit zwischen den Sprachen und zwischen den Ländern. Das Buch „ist zugleich auch eine illusionslose Reflexion über die Existenz des Emigranten als eine lebenslange Abfolge von Augenblicken der Fremdheit. Unterschiedliche Raum- und Sprachempfindungen überlagern sich. Die in diesem Band enthaltenen chronologischen Aufzeichnungen aus dieser Zeit sind Teil eines 1949 auf Englisch erschienenen Buches und liegen erstmals auf Deutsch vor. Mit kritischer Distanz, um Ausgewogenheit bemüht, berichtet er vom Krieg, von seinen Reisen durchs Land, von den Leuten, denen er begegnet. - Ein Zeitdokument, das unmittelbar und ausführlich Einblicke in die ersten Monate des jungen Staates und den israelischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg gibt und vor allem für diejenigen, die sich tiefer mit der konfliktreichen Geschichte Israels beschäftigen wollen, von Interesse sein könnte.     Abstract: "Kugel and Frijoles: Latino Jews in the United States analyzes the changing construction of race and ethnicity in the United States through the lens of contemporary Jewish immigrants from Latin America. Since Latino Jews are not easily classified within the U.S. racial and ethnic schema, their ethnic identity and group affiliation challenge existing paradigms. Author Laura Limonic offers a view into the lives of this designation of Jewish immigrants, highlighting the ways in which they adopt different identities (e.g., national, religious, or panethnic) in response to different actors and situations. Limonic begins by introducing the stories of Latino Jewish immigrants and laying out the important questions surrounding ethnic identity: How do Latino Jews identify? Can they choose their identity or is it assigned to them? How is ethnicity strategic or instrumental? These larger questions are placed within the existing scholarly literature on immigrant integration, religion, and ethnic group construction. Limonic explains how groups can be constructed when there is a lack of a perfect host group and details the ways different factors influence ethnic identity and shape membership into ethnic groups. The book concludes that group construction is never static in the United States, and, in particular, how race, religion, and class are increasingly important mediating factors in defining ethnicity and ethnic identity. As the Latino population continues to grow in the United States, so does the influence of millions of Latinos on U.S. culture, politics, economy, and social structure. Neben der Schilderung der sich stetig verschlechternden Lebensbedingungen im KZ Bergen-Belsen von Juli bis Dezember 1944 bietet es bemerkenswerte Einblicke in die unterschiedlichsten Formen der Selbstbehauptung der Häftlinge im sogenannten Ungarnlager. Hier waren fast 1700 Juden aus Ungarn interniert, die schließlich dank der Verhandlungen zwischen ungarischen Zionisten (vertreten vor allem durch Rezso Kasztner) und der SS bis Ende 1944 freigelassen wurden. Kolbs Tagebuch beschreibt auch eine der erfolgreichsten Rettungsaktionen in der Geschichte des Holocaust. Es wird - im ungarischen Original und in deutscher Übersetzung -erstmals veröffentlicht.     Abstract: In diesem Buch geht es um die große Menge kleiner Nazis. Die Sammlung von Berichten des amerikanischen Professors polnischer Abstammung, Theodore Fred Abel, ist einmalig, sie ist die wertvollste Primärquelle zur Frage, warum Menschen zu Nazis wurden, was zu ihrer Radikalisierung beitrug. Von den im Sommer 1934 geschriebenen ursprünglich 683 Berichten sind 581 erhalten. Es gibt keine vergleichbaren Quellen, die auch nur annähernd an die Fülle des Materials von 3.700 Seiten, den Reichtum an Details, die Freimütigkeit der Darstellung und die Intensität der Lebensbeschreibungen heran kommt. In diesen unmittelbaren Schilderungen findet sich ungefiltertes Gedankengut, nicht durch Scham späterer Erkenntnisse getrübt, durch Holocaust, Krieg und Untergang. Abel wollte wissen, wer diese Menschen sind, wie die Hitler-Bewegung in ihr Bewusstsein trat. Diese Biogramme beantworten erstmals in die Tiefe gehend Beweggründe und Haltung der Nazis. Through their thoughtful and candid recollections of the challenges they faced becoming accepted academics, they retell the story of how the study of the Jews and Judaism in the United States rose from being long dismissed as an amateurish enterprise not worthy of serious consideration in the world of ideas to its position today as a respected field in communication with all humanities scholars. Er wollte wissen, was die wahren Gründe der »Willkommenskultur« waren, warum Deutschland ein großes Herz gezeigt, aber immer noch keinen Plan hat, und wie es hier eigentlich um die Meinungsfreiheit bestellt ist. Seinen Gesprächspartnern – seien es Gregor Gysi, Volker Beck oder Kardinal Reinhard Marx, seien es Frauke Petry von der AfD, Pegida-Gründer Lutz Bachmann oder der geistige Führer der neuen Rechten Götz Kubitschek, seien es Akif Pirinçci oder Jürgen Todenhöfer – hat er unbequeme Fragen gestellt.     Abstract: Simha Rotem, genannt Kazik, nahm als Jugendlicher am Warschauer Ghettoaufstand teil. Er war 15 Jahre alt, als die NS-Armee in Polen einfiel, und 19, als der Aufstand am 19. April 1943 begann. Er organisierte die Flucht der letzten überlebenden Kämpfer aus dem brennenden Ghetto durch das Labyrinth der Abwasserkanäle. 1944 beteiligte sich Kazik am Warschauer Aufstand und bereitete anschließend noch vor Kriegsende Fluchtwege nach Israel vor. Ohne nachträglich zu romantisieren oder zu verklären, beschreibt er die schier unvorstellbare Härte des Kampfes gegen die Nazis.     Abstract: Dieses dokumentarische Projekt beleuchtet die Lebensgeschichten von 21 Österreicherinnen und Österreichern, die in den Dreißigerjahren vor dem Nationalsozialismus nach Großbritannien flüchteten und dort eine neue Heimat fanden. Die in London ansässige Fotografin Marion Trestler hat mit diesen jüdischen Flüchtlingen über viele Jahre hinweg Gespräche geführt, sie immer wieder besucht, fotografiert und gefilmt. Auf sehr persönliche Art und Weise hat sie sich den Lebensgeschichten, die sie in den einfühlsam geführten Interviews erfahren hat, genähert und mit der Darstellung der vielgestaltigen, individu-ellen Erzählungen in diesem Buch ist es nun gelungen, dieses Wissen über die Vergangenheit zu-gänglich, begreifbar und damit auch nachvollziehbar zu machen. Zudem wird dieser außergewöhnliche Porträt-Band durch wissenschaftliche und journalistischen Beiträge anderer Autorinnen und Autoren bereichert, sodass die Fülle der so entstandenen bio-grafischen Essays, der zusammengestellten Zitate und der von Marion Trestler aufgenommen Bilder einen Blick erlaubt auf 21 faszinierende Persönlichkeiten, ihren vielfältigen Einfluss auf kulturelle und gesellschaftliche Aspekte und ihre reichhaltigen Lebensgeschichten, ihre Lebenswege, ihr Lebenswerk

    Abstract: "The visions of modernity depicted in the writings of major Modernist German-Jewish writers and philosophers manifest, says Vivian Liska, the paradoxical dynamic that the break with tradition invokes figures of thought derived from Jewish tradition. In German-Jewish Thought and Its Afterlife, Liska innovatively focuses on the changing form, fate and function of messianism, law, exile, election, remembrance, and the transmission of tradition itself in three different temporal and intellectual frameworks: German-Jewish modernism, postmodernism, and the current period. Highlighting these elements of the Jewish tradition in the works of Franz Kafka, Walter Benjamin, Gershom Scholem, Hannah Arendt, and Paul Celan, Liska reflects on dialogues and conversations between them and on the reception of their work. She shows how this Jewish dimension of their writings is transformed, but remains significant in the theories of Maurice Blanchot and Jacques Derrida and how it is appropriated, dismissed or denied by some of the most acclaimed thinkers at the turn of the twenty-first century such as Giorgio Agamben, Slavoj Žižek, and Alain Badiou."--
