    Abstract: "Facing the harrowing task of rebuilding a life in the wake of the Holocaust, many Jewish survivors, community and religious leaders, and Allied soldiers viewed marriage between Jewish women and military personnel as a way to move forward after unspeakable loss. Proponents believed that these unions were more than just a ticket out of war-torn Europe: they would help the Jewish people repopulate after the attempted annihilation of European Jewry. Historian Robin Judd, whose grandmother survived the Holocaust and married an American soldier after liberation, introduces us to the Jewish women who lived through genocide and went on to wed American, Canadian, and British military personnel after the war. She offers an intimate portrait of how these unions emerged and developed-from meeting and courtship to marriage and immigration to life in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom-and shows how they helped shape the postwar world by touching thousands of lives, including those of the chaplains who officiated their weddings, the Allied authorities whose policy decisions structured the couples' fates, and the bureaucrats involved in immigration and acculturation.     Abstract: "When the Nazis came to power, they used various strategies to expel German Jews from social, cultural, and economic life. Fighter, Worker, and Family Man focuses on the gendered experiences and discrimination that German-Jewish men faced between 1933 and 1941. Sebastian Huebel argues that Jewish men's gender identities, intersecting with categories of ethnicity, race, class, and age, underwent a profound process of marginalization that destabilized their accustomed ways of performing masculinity. At the same time, in their attempts to sustain their conceptions of masculinity these men maintained agency and developed coping strategies that prevented their full-scale emasculation. Huebel draws on a rich archive of diaries, letters, and autobiographies to interpret the experiences of these men, focusing on their roles as soldiers and protectors, professionals and breadwinners, and parents and husbands. Fighter, Worker, and Family Man sheds light on how the Nazis sought to emasculate Jewish men through propaganda, the law, and violence, and how in turn German-Jewish men were able to defy emasculation and adapt--at least temporarily--to their marginalized status as men."--

    Abstract: "This book examines the separation between Western Jewish advocacy organizations and international human rights after the creation of Israel. For nearly a century, Jewish lawyers and advocacy groups in Western Europe and the United States pioneered forms of international rights protection, tying the defense of Jews to norms and rules that aspired to curb the worst behavior of rapacious nation-states. In the wake of the Holocaust and the creation of the State of Israel, however, Jewish activists discovered they could no longer promote the same norms, laws and innovations without fear they could soon apply to the Jewish state. Bringing to light previously unexamined sources, this book examines the transformation of Jewish internationalism from an effort to constrain the power of nation-states to one focused on cementing Israel's legitimacy and its status as a haven for refugees from across the Jewish diaspora.     Abstract: "In the aftermath of World War II, a succession of mass supernatural events swept through a war-torn Germany. As millions were afflicted by a host of seemingly incurable maladies (including blindness and paralysis), waves of apocalyptic rumors crashed over the land. A messianic faith healer rose to extraordinary fame, prayer groups performed exorcisms, and enormous crowds traveled to witness apparitions of the Virgin Mary. Most strikingly, scores of people accused their neighbors of witchcraft, and found themselves in turn hauled into court on charges of defamation, assault, and even murder. What linked these events, in the wake of an annihilationist war and the Holocaust, was a widespread preoccupation with evil. While many histories emphasize Germany's rapid transition from genocidal dictatorship to liberal democracy, A Demon-Haunted Land places in full view the toxic mistrust, profound bitterness, and spiritual malaise that unfolded alongside the economic miracle. Drawing from a set of previously unpublished archival materials, acclaimed historian Monica Black argues that the surge of supernatural obsessions stemmed from the unspoken guilt and shame of a nation remarkably silent about what was euphemistically called "the most recent past."     Abstract: "When European powers carved political borders across the Middle East following World War I, a curious event in the international drug trade occurred: Palestine became the most important hashish waystation in the region and a thriving market for consumption. British and French colonial authorities utterly failed to control the illicit trade, raising questions about the legitimacy of their mandatory regimes. The creation of the Israeli state, too, had little effect to curb illicit trade. By the 1960s, the drug trade had become a major point of contention in the Arab-Israeli conflict, and drug use widespread. "Intoxicating Zion" is the first book to tell the story of hashish in Palestine/Israel. Trafficking, use, and regulation; race, gender, and class; colonialism and nation-building all twine together in Haggai Ram's social history of the drug from the 1920s to the aftermath of the 1967 War. The hashish trade encompassed smugglers, international gangs, residents, law enforcers, and political actors, and Ram traces these flows through the interconnected realms of cross-border politics, economics, and culture. Hashish use was and is a marker of belonging and difference, and its history offers readers a unique glimpse into how the modern Middle East was made"--

    Abstract: Sorgfältige wissenschaftliche Edition des sog. "Lili Jacob-Albums", das die zur Vernichtung der ungarischen Juden organisierten Abläufe in Auschwitz-Birkenau fotografisch dokumentiert. Im Auftrag der Lagerleitung wurde das Album erstellt, um die Effizienz der NS-Tötungsmaschinerie zu belegen. Rezension (ekz): In Auftrag gab es die KZ-Lagerleitung, um die Effizienz der NS-Tötungsmaschinerie zu belegen, und genau das tut das sogenannte "Lili Jacob-Album" auch heute noch. Schonungslos macht es die Abläufe sichtbar, die in Auschwitz zur Selektion und Auslöschung der aus Ungarn deportierten Juden organisiert waren. Lili Jacob, die das Album aufbewahrt hat, übergab es 1980 der Gedenkstätte Yad Vashem, die es 2002 erstmals publizierte (deutsch u.d.T.: "Das Auschwitz-Album", 2016). Nun liegt es neu in einer sorgfältigen wissenschaftlichen Edition vor. Die einschlägig ausgewiesenen Historiker beleuchten das Vernichtungsprogramm gegen die ungarischen Juden, spüren den Biografien Lili Jacobs und der beiden SS-Fotografen nach, und vor allem blicken sie mit akribischer Detailschärfe auf die Fotos, die, meist im Kleinformat, erstmals richtig gereiht und vollständig abgedruckt sind. Sie untersuchen Bildsprache und -themen, identifizieren, soweit möglich, dargestellte Personen, stellen Bezüge zwischen den Fotos her und rekonstruieren die Bildserien.     Abstract: This book covers the 3,000 years which saw the rise of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam - and relates the familiar stories of the sacred texts with the fruits of modern scholarship. Beginning with the origins of the people who became the Israel of the Bible, it follows the course of the ensuing millennia down to the time when the Ottoman Empire succumbed to British and French rule at the end of the First World War. Parts of the story, especially as known from the Bible, will be widely familiar. Less familiar are the ways in which modern research, both from archaeology and from other ancient sources, sometimes modify this story historically. Better understanding, however, enables us to appreciate crucial chapters in the story of the Holy Land, such as how and why Judaism developed in the way that it did from the earlier sovereign states of Israel and Judah and the historical circumstances in which Christianity emerged from its Jewish cradle. Later parts of the story are vital not only for the history of Islam and its relationships with the two older religions, but also for the development of pilgrimage and religious tourism, as well as the notions of sacred space and of holy books with which we are still familiar today. From the time of Napoleon on, European powers came increasingly to develop both cultural and political interest in the region, culminating in the British and French conquests which carved out the modern states of the Middle East

    Abstract: Obwohl das Thema »Gedächtnis« Teil eines großen Diskurses innerhalb der Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften ist, fehlt es bislang an einer Gedächtnistheorie, die einen echten epistemischen Nutzen für die Geschichtswissenschaft aufweist. Mit Hilfe der soziologischen Systemtheorie von Niklas Luhmann überträgt Juliane Reil konstruktive Ansätze aus den Theorien von Jan Assmann, Pierre Nora und Johannes Fried in ein integratives Modell von Gedächtnistheorie. Dabei wird das komplexe Zusammenspiel von Gedächtnisprozessen auf individueller und kollektiver Ebene anhand von prominenten Beispielen des praktischen Umgangs mit dem Holocaust (etwa den vielerorts gelegten »Stolpersteinen«) deutlich gemacht

    Abstract: Nachdem er jahrelang die Zerstörung seiner Familie im Holocaust verdrängte, beginnt der Geigenbauer Amnon Weinstein in seiner Werkstatt in Tel Aviv in den 1990er Jahren damit, Geigen zu restaurieren, die von jüdischen Musikern während des Holocausts gespielt wurden. Denn vor ihm steht ein Mann, der im Orchester von Auschwitz spielte, seine Violine über Jahrzehnte nicht angerührt hat und sie nun für seinen Enkel reparieren lassen will. Als Weinstein das Instrument öffnet, entdeckt er im Inneren Asche, die aus den Krematorien stammen muss. Grymes erzählt die Geschichte von sieben Geigen, die Weinstein in den folgenden Jahren zu neuem Glanz und Leben erweckt: Für die Musiker konnten sie ein Mittel sein, um rechtzeitig aus Europa zu fliehen, wie bei Bronislaw Hubermann, dem Gründer des Palestine Orchestra, des späteren berühmten Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Um nicht vollständig Mut und Verstand zu verlieren, wenn sie wie Erich Weininger bei seiner Odyssee nach Palästina von den Briten abgefangen und für Jahre nach Mauritius deportiert wurden. Oder wie Henry Meyer in Konzentrationslagern und Ghettos um ihr Leben spielten. Geigen konnten sogar dazu dienen, sich mit Waffen zu wehren, wie die Geschichte von Mordechai Schlein zeigt, der es schaffte, mit Hilfe eines Geigenkastens, in dem er Sprengstoff versteckte, einen Club voller SS-Offiziere in die Luft zu jagen. Und sie wurden zum einzigen Andenken an lang vermisste Verwandte, wie bei Shimon Krongeld, dessen Instrument nach seinem Tod völlig unerwartet bei seiner Familie in Jerusalem auftauchte.

    Abstract: Antisemitic stereotypes of Jews as capitalists have hindered research into the economic dimension of the Jewish past. The figure of the Jew as trader and financier dominated the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. But the economy has been central to Jewish life and the Jewish image in the world; Jews not only made money but spent money. This book is the first to investigate the intersection between consumption, identity, and Jewish history in Europe. It aims to examine the role and place of consumption within Jewish society and the ways consumerism generated and reinforced Jewish notions of belonging from the end of the eighteenth century to the beginning of the new millennium. It shows how the advances of modernization and secularization in the modern period increased the importance of consumption in Jewish life, making it a significant factor in the process of redefining Jewish identity

    Abstract: "In the last two decades a large amount of previously secret documents on Jewish issues emerged from the newly opened Communist archives. The selection of these papers published in the volume and stemming mostly from Hungarian archives will shed light on a period of Jewish history that is largely ignored because much of the current scholarship treats the Shoah as the end of Jewish history in the region. The documents introduced and commented by the editor of the volume, András Kovács, will give insight into the conditions and constraints under which the Jewish communities, first of all, the largest Jewish community of the region, the Hungarian one, had to survive in the time of the post-Stalinist Communist dictatorship. They may shed light on the ways that 'Jewish policy' of the Soviet bloc countries was coordinated and orchestrated from Moscow and by the single countries. The archival material will prove that the ruling communist parties were restlessly preoccupied with the 'Jewish question.' This preoccupation, which kept the whole issue alive in the decades of communist rule, explains to a great extent its open reemergence in the time of transition and in the post-communist period"--Provided by publisher

Providing a deep examination of the day-to-day lives of Jewish families in British Mandate Palestine, this book shows how political objectives are not only achieved by political agreements, public debates, and battlefields, but also by the activities of ordinary men, women, and families

Hass-Parolen auf antiisraelischen Demonstrationen in Berlin, Frankfurt, im Ruhrgebiet, einseitige Berichterstattung und Kritik an Israel in Medien, Parteien (SPD, Linke), evangelischer Kirche, unter Intellektuellen (Martin Walser, Günter Grass, Jakob Augstein "haben den Antisemitismus salonfähig gemacht"). Sie haben viele Gespräche geführt, mit einem israelischen Journalisten in Berlin oder der dortigen Leiterin des Jüdischen Museums, die von ihren Erfahrungen, Befindlichkeiten erzählen und die versuchen, eine Erklärung für den Antisemitismus im Nachkriegsdeutschland zu finden. Das Buch klärt über den in Deutschland vorhandenen Antisemitismus auf, macht die Angst der hier lebenden Juden deutlich. Für eine legitime Kritik an Israel fordern die Autoren objektive Informationsgrundlagen. Dafür bietet das Buch zu wenig: Kritik wird in Nebensätzen und verkürzt behandelt, wichtige kritische Stimmen aus Israel fehlen völlig. Zur Diskussion. (2)

    Abstract: "From 1938 until 1943 - before the German occupation and accompanying Holocaust - Fascist Italy drafted and enforced a comprehensive set of anti-Semitic laws. Notwithstanding later rationalizations, the laws were enforced and administered with a high degree of severity and resulted in serious, and in some cases permanent, damage to the Italian Jewish community. Written from the perspective of an American legal scholar, this book constitutes the first truly comprehensive survey of the Race Laws in the English language. Based on an exhaustive review of Italian legal, administrative, and judicial sources, together with archives of the Italian Jewish community, Professor Michael A. Livingston demonstrates the zeal but also the occasional ambivalence and contradictions with which the Race Laws were applied and assimilated by the Italian legal order and ordinary citizens. Although frequently depressing, the history of the Race Laws also involves numerous examples of personal courage and idealism, and provides a useful and timely study of what happens when otherwise decent people are confronted with an evil and unjust legal order"--

    Abstract: "Why exactly did the Nazis burn the Hebrew Bible everywhere in Germany on November 9, 1938? The perplexing event has not been adequately accounted for by historians in their large-scale assessments of how and why the Holocaust occurred. In this gripping new analysis, Alon Confino draws on an array of archives across three continents to propose a penetrating new assessment of one of the central moral problems of the twentieth century. To a surprising extent, Confino demonstrates, the mass murder of Jews during the war years was powerfully anticipated in the culture of the prewar years. The author shifts his focus away from the debates over what the Germans did or did not know about the Holocaust and explores instead how Germans came to conceive of the idea of a Germany without Jews. He traces the stories the Nazis told themselves-where they came from and where they were heading-and how those stories led to the conclusion that Jews must be eradicated in order for the new Nazi civilization to arise. The creation of this new empire required that Jews and Judaism be erased from Christian history, and this was the inspiration-and justification-for Kristallnacht.     Abstract: D'Ignaz Goldziher, qui put étudier à la grande université Al-Azhar du Caire, à Hermann Vambéry qui, déguisé en derviche, gagna Samarkande à pied, à la recherche des origines ouzbèkes supposées de la langue hongroise, les savants juifs des XIXe et XXe siècles eurent un rapport privilégié avec l'Orient, entendu comme l'espace dans lequel s'est déployée la culture arabo-musulmane, mais qui désigne aussi l'ensemble des pays extérieurs à la loi chrétienne, comme en attestent les travaux des indianistes Sylvain Lévi ou Theodor Benfey. « Passeurs d'Orients », donc, ils participent activement d'un mouvement qui fonde une science nouvelle, originellement philologique, mais aussi science des religions, que les clivages du second XXe siècle aura tôt fait de qualifier de "colonialiste", quand il s'est agi, surtout, d'en dégager la dimension singulière, au regard d'un Occident désorienté. À travers les plus grandes figures de l'orientalisme, le volume, issu en partie d'un colloque qui eut lieu au Musée d'Art et d'Histoire du Judaïsme de Paris en 2012, retrace à la fois l'histoire et les implications de cette relation particulière et en dénoue les malentendus idéologiques et politiques. Perrine Simon Nahum (1960) est historienne et chargée de recherches au CNRS. elle est également en charge d'une collection d'essais chez Grasset. Michel Espagne (1952) est linguiste et professeur à l'ENS-rue d'Ulm. Le volume reprend et enrichit les actes d'un colloque organisé au Musée d'Art et d'histoire du Judaïsme en 2012.     Abstract: The Economic History of European Jews attempts to make sense of the economic foundations of Jewish life in the different parts of late antique and early medieval Europe. In the first part Michael Toch describes the demographic arc, decline, subsequent rise, and spatial distribution of Jewish populations. This data is then broadened to include the range of economic activities. The second part analyses the actual share of Jews in different branches of the economy. This includes the idea of their pioneer role and the notion of an intercontinental network of Jewish commerce, the phenomenon of Jews in agriculture and entrepreneurship, gender roles and the household mode of production, and the difficult subject of the significance of minority status for economic activity, among other subjects. \'This is the most up-to-date scholarly reassessment of a century of both overly optimistic and occasionally negative interpretations of Jewish population and economic activities, a boon to students and researchers of the first millennium of the Jewish experience in Europe, and an interesting read for the general public.\' S.     Abstract: "This book proposes to understand the Holocaust by looking at Nazi and German culture and sensibilities that made the persecution and extermination imaginable, possible, and conceivable. It critically reviews the keycurrents in Holocaust historiography in the last generation, arguing for a new approach that places at the center not simply what happened during the Nazi years--the anti-Semetic ideological campaign, the machinery of killing, the brutal massacres during the way--but especially what the Nazi and other Germans thought was happening; a necessary, deathly war against the key enemy, the Jews"--
