Abstract:
In Austria, at the beginning of the 20th century, and in Germany, during the Nazi regime, the work of Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) suffered the most violent attacks. For Austrian antisemites and German Nazis, Schoenberg's atonal music was an affront against the tonal tradition of centuries in European music, and against the values of Aryan culture, such as order, hierarchy, and harmony. His music was seen as "degenerate" ("entartete Musik"), a typical product of the Jewish spirit, motivated by the wish to destroy the foundations of Aryan civilization.
