    Abstract: This collection of articles is tightly focused on metaphors in the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible and their later afterlife in Jewish and Christian texts. The essays deal with a wide range of historical, literary, and methodological issues. First, several contributions employ metaphor theory in analysing the biblical texts, both conceptual frameworks such as blending theory and more traditional methods. Second, metaphors are studied both synchronically, that is, in relation to their current literary contexts, and diachronically, that is, mapping how they have been employed and re-interpreted in different ways and different texts throughout time. Third, other contributions read metaphors in light of theoretical frameworks such as feminist criticism, post-colonial theories, or power discourses that uncover aspects of significance often missed in historical studies. Finally, yet other contributions deal with the issue of how to translate metaphors in contemporary contexts

    Abstract: Die Niederlande waren für deutsche Juden während des Nationalsozialismus ein Land der Hoffnung, eines neuen Alltags, der enttäuschten Erwartungen und der erneuten VerfolgungDie antisemitische Politik des "Dritten Reiches" veranlasste in den 1930er-Jahren Hundertausende Juden zur Flucht aus Deutschland. Zu den ersten Exilländern gehörten die benachbarten Niederlande, wo die meisten jedoch nur eine Zuflucht auf Zeit fanden. Der Aufbau einer neuen Existenz gestaltete sich oftmals schwierig. Viele zogen weiter. Diejenigen aber, die diesen Schritt nicht gehen konnten oder wollten, waren nach dem Einmarsch der Wehrmacht im Mai 1940 erneut der nationalsozialistischen Verfolgung ausgeliefert. Tausende wurden in den folgenden Jahren deportiert und ermordet.Christine Kausch nimmt das Leben der jüdischen Flüchtlinge in den Jahren 1933 bis 1945 in den Blick und analysiert auf Basis hunderter Egodokumente sowie zahlreicher weiterer Quellen die individuellen und kollektiven Erfahrungen der Geflüchteten. Die Autorin untersucht, wie die Menschen im Nachbarland aufgenommen wurden, wie sie die erneute Verfolgung erlebten und wie sie auf die jeweiligen Umstände reagierten. Die Studie bietet damit einen wichtigen Beitrag zur jüdischen, niederländischen und deutschen Geschichte

Von 1939 bis 1945 ermordete das nationalsozialistische Regime rund 13 Millionen Zivilisten und andere Nichtkombattanten in Vernichtungslagern und ausserhalb davon. Fast die Hälfte der Opfer des Nationalsozialismus waren Juden. Die Judenverfolgung und die Shoah sind in der Geschichte ohne Beispiel, aber als Teil eines systematischen Massenmordprogramms zu betrachten. Zu den Opfern der NS-Verbrechen gehörten auch Behinderte, Roma, polnische Eliten, gefangene Rotarmisten und unbewaffnete Zivilisten. Der Massenmord als Kriegsstrategie: die erste integrative, umfassende Analyse. Vom britischen Historiker Alex J. Kay, der bereits fünf bedeutende Bücher über die Zeit des Nationalsozialismus veröffentlicht hat. Die Geschichte des Holocausts und die Ermordung ethnischer und sozialer Bevölkerungsgruppen. Fundamentaler Beitrag zur Aufarbeitung der nationalsozialistischen Verbrechen im 2. Weltkrieg. Die erste integrative Gesamtdarstellung der Völkermord-Politik des NS-Regimes. Erstmals führt Alex J.     Abstract: Das Thema der "Prophetie" ist für die jüdische und christliche Bibel und den Qur'an jeweils auf unterschiedliche Weise bedeutsam. Der Band vereint unter dem Aspekt einer historisch-rezeptionsgeschichtlichen Perspektive Beiträge, die zum einen die Zeiten und Räume vom Alten Orient bis in die Spätantike abschreiten und sich zum anderen auf prophetische Figuren konzentrieren. Beide Durchgänge legen offen, wie sich das Phänomen Prophetie jeweils historisch und textuell fassen lässt, wie auf vorliegende Traditionen zurückgegriffen und wie diese in der Rezeption transformiert wurden. Den Abschluss bildet ein aktualisierender Blick auf die Praxis der Vermittlung prophetischer Texte.

    Abstract: The Balkans provided the escape route for tens of thousands of German Jews, and remained a place of refuge until the Nazis brutally shut it off with the mass murder of Jewish refugees on the so-called Kladovo transport starting in September 1941, which can be considered as the beginning of the Holocaust in Europe. Responding to publications about the Western European and American exile experience of the Jews after 1933, this book offers comparative insights into the less trodden paths of the persecuted, illuminating the cultural and political context of the Balkan host countries, the response of local Jewish communities, and the reactions of common people and assorted criminals. The Balkans, often marginalised and loathed, emerges in hundreds of personal accounts of survivors gathered here, supplemented by extensive archival research, as a welcoming getaway, where thousands survived thanks to the Italian occupiers, illiterate peasants, and Communist-led Partisan resisters

    Abstract: "Judaism is often described as the religion of the book par excellence - a religious movement built around the study of and commentary on the Hebrew Bible and steeped in a culture of bookishness that evolved from an unrelenting focus on a canonical text. Standard works of modern scholarship reinforce this view -- that the Jewish tradition has always embraced the Bible as a blueprint for the religious life. In this monograph, Rebecca Scharbach Wollenberg argues that this depiction of the tradition does not hold for much if its existence -- and more specifically, not for the first thousand years after the Bible was first canonized. Prior to the modern era, late antique and early medieval rabbinic authorities were deeply ambivalent about the Hebrew Bible (aka Old Testament, aka Torah). The Bible can be a really unsettling book because of its repeated depictions of impiety, taboo behavior of all sorts, and unapologetic expressions of doubt and skepticism. It's no accident, then, that Jews -- including their rabbis -- seldom opened a Bible during this long period. But how can you avoid Bible reading while being part of a community in which that same Bible is supposed to be a central pillar of communal identity? The rabbis met this challenge by instituting two workarounds. On the one hand, they incorporated ritualized readings of biblical passages into liturgical gatherings, so that the text was "read" (or chanted) in a rote, formulaic way -- a way that did not lend itself to deep musing about meaning. In such gatherings, the Torah scroll was treated as an entity that manifests sacred powers in its own right (hence the development of rituals governing the handling of the scrolls, including the practices of binding, unrolling, and rolling them). On the other hand, the rabbis constructed a vast edifice of interpretation of Scripture that came to be known in the tradition as the "Oral Torah", including rabbinic stories, commentary, and laws (and associated with terms such as midrash and Talmud). Both of these workarounds, argues Wollenberg, served to marginalize the written text of the Hebrew Bible as a source of cultural transmission and knowledge"

    Abstract: After their expulsion from Spain in 1492, Sephardi Jews such as Isaac Abravanel, Abraham Saba, and Isaac Arama wrote biblical commentaries that stressed the significance of land. They interpreted Judaism as a tradition whose best expression and ultimate fulfillment took place away from cities and in rural settings. Iberian-Jewish authors rooted their moral teachings in an ethical treatment of the natural world, elucidating ancient agricultural laws and scrutinizing the physical context and built environments of Bible stories. The Land Is Mine asks what inspired this and suggests that the answer lies not in timeless exegetical or theological trends, but in the material realities of late medieval and early modern Iberia, during a period of drastic changes in land use.The book uses a highly traditional source base in a decidedly untraditional way. In Jewish Studies, Andrew D. Berns observes, biblical commentary is typically studied as an intramural activity. Though scholars have conceded that Jewish scriptural exegesis welcomes material and ideas from other fields and traditions, little to no work treats premodern Hebrew Bible commentary as also drawing upon Classical and Christian sources as well as contemporary writings on land management and political economy. Abravanel, Saba, and Arama were engaged with questions that had broad resonance during their lives: the proper way to treat the land, the best occupations to pursue, and the ideal setting for human community. Scriptural commentary was the forum in which they addressed these problems and posed solutions to them.A work of intellectual history,The Land Is Mine demonstrates that it is impossible to understand Jewish culture without considering the physical realities on which it depended

    Abstract: The Encyclopedia of Material Culture in the Biblical World (EBW) builds on the German "Standardwerk" Biblisches Reallexikon (BRL), edited by Kurt Galling 1937, second edition 1977 (2BRL). It is a reference book for biblical scholars, historians, and archaeologists. The EBW focusses on the material culture from the Neolithic Age to the Hellenistic period, giving attention to the material from the Bronze and Iron Ages, including the Persian period. The geographic regions covered by the entries include primarily the records of Palestine (= the Southern Levant) limited by (excl.) the southern fringe of Lebanon and Hermon (North), the Wadi al-Ariš, the Sinai peninsula and North-Arabia (South), the Mediterranean Sea (West) and the Transjordanian desert (East). If appropriate to the entry, the neighboring evidence from Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Mesopotamia is included. The Encyclopedia presents and documents the material culture based on the archaeological, epigraphical, and iconographical data in historical order and documents the state of current research. The entries do not only list or mention the most important material data, but try to synthesize and interpret it within the horizon of a history of Southern Levantine culture, economy, technical development, art, and religion. The EBW consists of around 120 articles and an introductory part pertaining to the chronology of the EBW, archaeology and cultural History, epigraphy, and iconography, written by specialists from 15 different countries.

    Abstract: "Vicente Dobroruka explores Iranian influence on Second Temple Judaism, providing a new explanation of Persian culture and history in the context of biblical accounts by focusing on the spread of Zoroastrian ideas in the period c.300 BCE - 200 CE. Dobroruka begins his investigation with an overview of the problems posed by a dualistic worldview - he examines the Indo-European origins of Zarathushtra and his ideas, the long-term implications for the notion of free-will, and clarifies the lightness/darkness paradigm that originated in Persia. Following this, Dobroruka discusses a variety of concepts that illustrate this influence, such as the role of matter and the material world, aspects of dualism and the cosmic struggle, the perspectives on the rewards for the just and the opposing punishments for the wicked, the idea of an 'Anointed One', shamanistic visionary experience, the resurrection, and the concepts of Sheol and Paradise"--

    Abstract: In Jerusalem of the early second century, a Jewish teacher, later widely, and simply, known as Ben Sira, wrote, in contemporary Hebrew, a collection of proverbs designed to advise his co-religionists how to express and maintain their Jewishness and values in the face of a dominant Hellenistic culture. His proverbs were later translated into Greek by his grandson. Because the early Church, but not Rabbinic Judaism, included the book in its scriptural canon, the original Hebrew gradually gave way to the Greek, Latin and Syriac versions and was virtually lost in the late medieval and early modern periods. The late nineteenth-century discoveries from the Cairo Genizah restored Hebrew versions of much of the book. Academic use of Ben Sira's work is now greatly facilitated by this scientific polyglot of all four versions, originally planned and initiated by Friedrich V. Reiterer at the University of Salzburg, and now brought to fruition by the painstaking scholarly efforts of Renate Egger-Wenzel, who has also provided a text edition of the Hebrew manuscripts and a guide to the project and to the volume.

    Abstract: "This volume both reflects on the contested nature of the Wisdom Literature category and takes advantage of the opportunities it presents for reconsidering the concept of wisdom more independently from it. The first half explores wisdom as a concept, with essays on its relationship to skill, epistemology, virtue, theology, and order in the Hebrew Bible, its meaning in related cultures, from Egypt and Mesopotamia to Patristic and Rabbinic interpretation, and, finally, its continuing relevance the modern world, including in Islamic, Jewish, and Christian thought, and from feminist, environmental, and other contextual perspectives. The latter half considers "Wisdom Literature" as a category. Scholars address its relation to the Solomonic Collection, its social setting, literary genres, chronological development, and theology. Wisdom Literature's relation to other biblical literature (law, history, prophecy, apocalyptic, and the broad question of "Wisdom influence") is then discussed before separate chapters on the texts commonly associated with the category. Contributors take a variety of approaches to the current debates surrounding the viability and value of the Wisdom Literature category and its proper relationship to the concept of wisdom in the Hebrew Bible. Though the organization of the volume highlights the independence of wisdom as concept from "Wisdom Literature" as category, seeking to counter the lack of attention given to this question in the traditional approach, the inclusion of both topics together in the same volume reflects their continued interconnection. As such, this handbook both represents the current state of Wisdom scholarship and sets the stage for future developments"--

    Abstract: Eldon Jay Epp's second volume of collected essays consists of articles previously published during 2006-2017. All treat aspects of the New Testament textual criticism, but focus on historical and methodological issues relevant to constructing the earliest attainable text of New Testament writings. More specific emphasis falls upon the nature of textual transmission and the text-critical process, and heavily on the criteria employed in establishing that earliest available text. Moreover, textual grouping is examined at length, and prominent is the current approach to textual variants not approved for the constructed text, for they have stories to tell regarding theological, ethical, and real-life issues as the early Christian churches sought to work out their own status, practices, and destiny

    Abstract: "In Parables in Changing Contexts, new venues in the comparative study of parables are addressed by scholars of Judaism, New Testament, Buddhism and Islam. Essays cover parables in the synoptic Gospels, Rabbinic midrash, and parabolic tales and fables in the Babylonian Talmud. Three essays address parables in Islam and Buddhism. The volume shows how parables are suitably adapted in terms of form and rhetoric to enhance religious identity formation. Parables serve as media, as sensational forms making the sacred present, albeit encoded or riddled, in all cases invoking the listener's active interpretative participation and cultural imagination. Adapting a multidisciplinary approach to these gems of storytelling, parables in a particular way provide new insights in the cultures that produced them"

    Abstract: In this volume, Tzvi Abusch presents studies written over a span of forty years that were completed prior to his retirement from Brandeis University in 2019. They reflect several themes that he has pursued in addition to his work on witchcraft literature and the Epic of Gilgamesh. The volume begins with general articles on Mesopotamian magic, religion, and mythology; these are followed by a set of articles on Akkadian prayers, especially šuillas , focusing, first of all, on exegetical and linguistic (synchronic) studies and, then, on diachronic analyses; part two contains a series of literary studies of Mesopotamian and biblical classics; part three is devoted to comparative studies of terms and phenomena; finally, the fourth part takes up texts that are of legal interest. The Harvard Semitic Studies series publishes volumes from the Harvard Museum of the Ancient Near East.     Abstract: In this volume, Douglas Yoder uses the tools of modern and postmodern philosophy and biblical criticism to elucidate the epistemology of the Tanakh, the collection of writings that comprise the Hebrew Bible. Despite the conceptual sophistication of the Tanakh, its epistemology has been overlooked in both religious and secular hermeneutics. The concept of revelation, the genre of apocalypse, and critiques of ideology and theory are all found within or derive from epistemic texts of the Tanakh. Yoder examines how philosophers such as Spinoza, Hume, and Kant interacted with such matters. He also explores how the motifs of writing, reading, interpretation, image, and animals, topics that figure prominently in the work of Derrida, Foucault, and Nietzsche, appear also in the Tanakh. An understanding of Tanakh epistemology, he concludes, can lead to new appraisals of religious and secular life throughout the modern world

    Abstract: "Die Umsetzung der nationalsozialistischen Verfolgungs- und Mordpolitik im Strafgefängnis Wolfenbüttel. Das Strafgefängnis Wolfenbüttel war die zentrale Haftstätte im früheren Land Braunschweig. Ab 1933 wies die Justiz zunehmend politisch Andersdenkende, sozial und rassistisch Ausgegrenzte, Homosexuelle sowie Zeugen Jehovas ein, während des Krieges auch ausländische Gefangene. 1937 wurde im Gefängnis eine Hinrichtungsstätte eingerichtet, bis zur Befreiung wurden hier 500 Todesurteile vollstreckt. Die Dauerausstellung der Gedenkstätte in der JVA Wolfenbüttel geht am Beispiel Wolfenbüttels der Frage nach, welche Rolle Justiz und Strafvollzug als Mittel nationalsozialistischer Herrschaft spielten. Auch die Kontinuitäten und Brüche in der frühen Bundesrepublik werden näher in den Blick genommen: Die Justiz sollte zwar eine neue, rechtsstaatliche Funktion erfüllen, gleichzeitig gab es aber in manchen Bereichen eine Praxis, die jener aus der NS-Zeit ähnelte. Der Katalog präsentiert die wichtigsten Fotografien, Dokumente, Objekte und die erläuternden Texte der Ausstellung. Vertiefende wissenschaftliche Essays stellen die Geschichte des Ortes in einen breiteren gesellschaftlichen und politischen Kontext." (Verlagsinformation)

    Abstract: In der Bibel gibt es Botschaften, die in Traumgestalt vermittelt werden: sehr bekannt ist Jakobs Traum von der Himmelsleiter. Auch für die Biografie seines Sohnes Josefs, der als Traumdeuter am Hof des ägyptischen Pharao Karriere macht, spielen Träume eine große Rolle. Im Matthäusevangelium und der Apostelgeschichte lässt Gott in Träumen Josef und Paulus wichtige Botschaften zukommen. Neben der Traumdeutung gibt es aber auch Kritik an der Bewertung von Träumen sind sie nicht nur Trugbilder und subjektive Empfindungen? Bei den meisten Propheten und bei Jesus Sirach wird angezweifelt, dass Träume göttliche Botschaften vermitteln könnten. Ähnliches findet sich in der griechisch-römischen Umwelt der Bibel.     Abstract: Die vielfältigen Transformationen der Bibel in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart werden exemplarisch an jüdischen und christlichen Transformationen der Davidfigur und des Opfermotivs diskutiert. Die Autorinnen und Autoren dieses Bandes verstehen biblische Transformationen als Veränderungsprozesse von Referenzbereich und Aufnahmebereich, die in der Bibel selbst beginnen. Die im Anschluss an Untersuchungen innerbiblischer Transformationsprozesse behandelten literarischen, musikalischen und (religions-)didaktischen Transformationen von Davidfigur und Opfermotiv reichen vom Hochmittelalter bis in die Gegenwart und berücksichtigen Texte und Musikstücke jüdischer wie christlicher Provenienz. Gerade die Spannung zwischen zwei Narrationen mit anscheinend nur wenig Gemeinsamkeiten ermöglicht einen Blick auf die Unterschiede von Transformationsprozessen biblischer Figuren und Motive
