    Abstract: Verlagsinfo: Das Tagebuch von Mary Berg wurde in Amerika vor Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs veröffentlicht und war der erste Augenzeugenbericht über das Leben im Warschauer Ghetto. Es beschreibt eindringlich den vergeblichen Versuch, sich möglichst lange einen normalen Alltag aufrechtzuerhalten, in den aber nach und nach Hunger, Krankheit und Tod Einzug hielten. Es dokumentiert, wie die Nazis 1942 die "Grosse Aktion" starteten, die zur schrittweisen Auflösung des Ghettos führte, und wie die ersten Berichte über Deportationen ins Vernichtungslager Treblinka die zurückgebliebenen Bewohner erschütterten. Es schildert die Gewissenbisse von Mary Berg, die 1943, kurz vor dem blutigen Aufstand im Warschauer Ghetto, mit ihren Eltern und der jüngeren Schwester fliehen kann, aber Freunde und Familienangehörige zurücklassen muss. Mary Berg gelingt es, die 12 kleinen Notizblöcke 1944 nach Amerika zu schmuggeln. Ihr Tagebuch gewährt dem Leser einen zutiefst persönlichen Einblick in den Holocaust und die Schuldgefühle einer Überlebenden.     Abstract: Verlagsinfo: Mordechai Strigler schuf mit seiner Buchreihe "Verloschene Lichter" ein literarisches Denkmal für die Opfer der Schoah. Nach "Majdanek" und "In den Fabriken des Todes" erscheint nun der dritte Teil in deutscher Erstausgabe. Kurz nach seiner Befreiung aus dem Konzentrationslager Buchenwald im April 1945 begann Mordechai Strigler, seine Erfahrungen in den Lagern des besetzten Polens literarisch zu verarbeiten. Schonungslos wie kaum ein anderer Überlebender beschreibt er die Lagerorganisation und das Lagerleben sowie den Umgang der jüdischen Gefangenen untereinander. In "Werk C" schildert Strigler die Monate von September 1943 bis März 1944 im Arbeitslager Skarzysko-Kamienna, das vom Leipziger Rüstungsunternehmen HASAG AG betrieben wurde. Dabei zeigt er - anders als im Vorgängerband - weniger die Produktionsbedingungen auf, sondern konzentriert sich auf einzelne Personen, Beziehungen und Begebenheiten. Er beschreibt sowohl den Alltag im Lager als auch aussergewöhnliche Umstände wie Geburten oder das von den Gefangenen ersonnene Prostitutionsmodell. Da er mit der Zeit in 'privilegiertere' Kreise der jüdischen Lagerverwaltung aufstieg, kann er auch über die 'mittlere Verwaltungsebene' sowie die Organisation des gesellschaftlichen Lagerlebens berichten und ein detailliertes Porträt der Funktionshäftlinge im Arbeitslager liefern.     Abstract: Sorgfältige wissenschaftliche Edition des sog. "Lili Jacob-Albums", das die zur Vernichtung der ungarischen Juden organisierten Abläufe in Auschwitz-Birkenau fotografisch dokumentiert. Im Auftrag der Lagerleitung wurde das Album erstellt, um die Effizienz der NS-Tötungsmaschinerie zu belegen. Rezension (ekz): In Auftrag gab es die KZ-Lagerleitung, um die Effizienz der NS-Tötungsmaschinerie zu belegen, und genau das tut das sogenannte "Lili Jacob-Album" auch heute noch. Schonungslos macht es die Abläufe sichtbar, die in Auschwitz zur Selektion und Auslöschung der aus Ungarn deportierten Juden organisiert waren. Lili Jacob, die das Album aufbewahrt hat, übergab es 1980 der Gedenkstätte Yad Vashem, die es 2002 erstmals publizierte (deutsch u.d.T.: "Das Auschwitz-Album", 2016). Nun liegt es neu in einer sorgfältigen wissenschaftlichen Edition vor. Die einschlägig ausgewiesenen Historiker beleuchten das Vernichtungsprogramm gegen die ungarischen Juden, spüren den Biografien Lili Jacobs und der beiden SS-Fotografen nach, und vor allem blicken sie mit akribischer Detailschärfe auf die Fotos, die, meist im Kleinformat, erstmals richtig gereiht und vollständig abgedruckt sind. Sie untersuchen Bildsprache und -themen, identifizieren, soweit möglich, dargestellte Personen, stellen Bezüge zwischen den Fotos her und rekonstruieren die Bildserien. While on the surface the conference appeared as an attempt to alleviate the distress faced by Jews being forced out of Germany and Austria, in reality it only served to demonstrate that the nations of the world were not willing to accept Jews as refugees. Since the Holocaust, a generally-held assumption has been that the Evian Conference represented a lost opportunity to save Germany’s Jews, and that the conference failed to rescue the Jews of Europe. In this study, Paul Bartrop argues that in fact it did not fail when measured against the original reasons for which it was called. Exposing many of the myths surrounding the meeting, this work addresses a glaring lacuna in the literature of the Holocaust, and places the so-called 'failure' of the Evian Conference into its proper context.

    Abstract: Irmgard Litten hat ihren vergeblichen Kampf um die Freilassung ihres Sohnes Hans aus dem KZ in einem erschütternden Bericht festgehalten, der erstmals 1940 veröffentlicht wurde. Dank der vorliegenden Neuauflage wird die Erinnerung an den mutigen Widerstand von Hans und Irmgard Litten wachgehalten. Rezension: In der Zeit der Weimarer Republik war Hans Litten ein Anwalt der Arbeiter, deren Interessen er gegenüber rechten Gewalttätern vor Gericht verteidigte. Im Edenpalast-Prozess von 1931 rief er Hitler in den Zeugenstand, um der deutschen Öffentlichkeit zu zeigen, dass dieser hinter den Schlägertrupps der SA steht. 2 Jahre später rächte sich Hitler und liess Litten festnehmen. Nach 5-jähriger Haft und Folter in verschiedenen deutschen KZs nahm sich Litten 1938 im KZ Dachau das Leben. Seine Mutter Irmgard Litten hatte mutig und beharrlich für seine Freilassung gekämpft, jedoch ohne Erfolg. Ihr erschütternder Bericht über die Haft ihres Sohnes und über ihren Einsatz für seine Freilassung wurde erstmals 1940 in Frankreich veröffentlicht ("Die Hölle sieht dich an"). Zeitgleich erschien der Text in England, USA, China und Mexiko, 1947 in der DDR und 1984 erstmals in der Bundesrepublik. Neben dem Hörbuch "Trotz der Tränen" (IN 43/13) ist die vorliegende Neuauflage, mit aktuellem Nachwort von Heribert Prantl, ein wichtiges Zeitdokument zur Erinnerung an 2 mutige Menschen des Widerstands.     Abstract: Created and developed by the Ptolemaic kings, the Library of Alexandria was regarded as the world’s main center of scholarship from the 3rd century BC until at least the reign of Cleopatra (48–30 BC). The dream to establish a gigantic library that could assemble all known texts of the Hellenistic period, the outstanding achievements of the scholars who worked inside its walls, and, finally, the mysteries surrounding its disappearance, have bestowed an almost mythic status on this monumental library. Where was the Royal Library exactly located? What kind of texts were kept in that library? To what extent did the Library of Alexandria become a meeting point for different languages and cultures? Should we distinguish between the Museum and the Library from an institutional point of view? Were the book collections housed in separate buildings? What caused the destruction of those collections and how much was lost? Why do some ancient authors remain silent about the Library’s disappearance? Polis—The Jerusalem Institute of Languages and Humanities held an international conference to seek answers to these question. The 2015 conference on the Library of Alexandria gathered historians, archaeologists, and linguists, as well as specialists on the Septuagint and on Greek literature.     Abstract: "Greg Burgess's important new study explores the short life of the High Commission for Refugees (Jewish and Other) Coming from Germany, from its creation by the League of Nations in October 1933 to the resignation of High Commissioner, James G. McDonald, in December 1935. The book relates the history of the first stage of refugees from Germany through the prism of McDonald and the High Commission. It analyses the factors that shaped the Commission's formation, the undertakings the Commission embarked upon and its eventual failure owing to external complications. The League of Nations and the Refugees from Nazi Germany argues that, in spite of the Commission's failure, the refugees from Nazi Germany and the High Commission's work mark a turn in conceptions of international humanitarian responsibilities when a state defies standards of proper behaviour towards its citizens. From this point on, it was no longer considered sufficient or acceptable for states to respect the sovereign rights of another if the rights of citizens were being violated.     Abstract: 2014 reist der wahldeutsche Autor Robert Scheer nach Israel, um dort seine Grossmutter Elisabeth Scheer, genannt Pici, uber ihre Kindheit und Jugend zu befragen. Pici feiert in dem Jahr ihren 90. Geburtstag. Ihrem Enkel gegenuber gibt Pici Auskunft, wie sich in den 1940er Jahren durch den Nationalsozialismus die Lage fur die judische Bevolkerung in Ungarn verschlechterte. Sie berichtet uber ihre furchtbaren Erlebnisse in den Ghettos Carei und Satu Mare, im Konzentrationslager Auschwitz, im beruchtigten Aussenlager Walldorf, im Konzentrationslager Ravensbruck und im mecklenburgischen Rechlin, bis sie 1945 im mecklenburgischen Malchow befreit wurde. Pici's Eltern, ihre Schwestern, ihr Bruder, ihr Schwager und ihre kleine Nichte wurden im Holocaust ermordet. Ihre detailreichen Erinnerungen machen es den Leserinnen und Lesern leicht, sich das Leben in der damaligen Zeit vorzustellen, in der es Alltag und Familie gab, spater dann Unmenschlichkeit und Vernichtung und nur vereinzelt auch Mitgefuhl und Solidaritat. 2015 stirbt Pici mit 91 Jahren. ... jetzt, zuruckdenkend, gab es in meinem Leben reichlich erschutternde Momente, aber irgendwie fand ich immer einen kleinen Schutz, einen Strohhalm, womit ich aus der Grube heraussteigen konnte, um weiter zu schreiten und um zu hoffen."     Abstract: Beispiele für bewussten und unbewussten Antisemitismus in Deutschland aus Politik, Kultur, Medien, Alltag, mit Gesprächen hier lebender Juden. Rezension: Die Autoren führen zahlreiche Beispiele aus allen Bereichen des gesellschaftlichen Lebens in Deutschland an, in denen sie alltäglichen Antisemitismus konstatieren. Hass-Parolen auf antiisraelischen Demonstrationen in Berlin, Frankfurt, im Ruhrgebiet, einseitige Berichterstattung und Kritik an Israel in Medien, Parteien (SPD, Linke), evangelischer Kirche, unter Intellektuellen (Martin Walser, Günter Grass, Jakob Augstein "haben den Antisemitismus salonfähig gemacht"). Sie haben viele Gespräche geführt, mit einem israelischen Journalisten in Berlin oder der dortigen Leiterin des Jüdischen Museums, die von ihren Erfahrungen, Befindlichkeiten erzählen und die versuchen, eine Erklärung für den Antisemitismus im Nachkriegsdeutschland zu finden. Das Buch klärt über den in Deutschland vorhandenen Antisemitismus auf, macht die Angst der hier lebenden Juden deutlich. Für eine legitime Kritik an Israel fordern die Autoren objektive Informationsgrundlagen. Dafür bietet das Buch zu wenig: Kritik wird in Nebensätzen und verkürzt behandelt, wichtige kritische Stimmen aus Israel fehlen völlig. Zur Diskussion. (2)
