Abstract: Until about 150 years ago, West Yiddish was the language used by Jews in Germany for their everyday affairs. It stood in close and intensive contact with the dialects of the Christian population. These dialects absorbed numerous loan-words from Yiddish, partly via the mediation of special languages like Rotwelsch ('thieves' Latin'). The dictionary is based on the responses of 108 informants and on written sources from the Bavarian region of Central Franconia. The references are studied for their etymology, semantics, morphology and phonology. Lexicological and word-geographical indications from all over the German-speaking territory are drawn upon to study their dissemination both in Yiddish and in various special languages.

Abstract: Biographical note: Paul Wexler is Professor at Tel-Aviv University, Israel.
Abstract: The book claims that Yiddish was created when Judaized Sorbs first relexified their language to High German between the 9th-12th centuries; by the 15th century, the descendants of the Judaized Khazars also relexified their Kiev-Polessian (northern Ukrainian and southern Belarusian) speech to Yiddish and German, Yiddish thus uses a mixed West-East Slavic grammar and suggests that converted Khazars were a major component in the Ashkenazic ethnogenesis.

Abstract: The book contains a synchronic description of the phonetic structure of Warsaw Yiddish. This takes the form of a linguistic analysis of spoken Yiddish on the basis of interviews with the last remaining speakers of this Warsaw dialect, which is now on the verge of extinction. The recorded material is given in the second part of the book in a number of versions: phonetic/prosodic, Yiddish, German and Polish. Alongside a detailed description of the vowel and consonant systems there is also a taxonomy of sentence-phonetic phenomena representing an entirely new departure in the field of Yiddish studies. In addition typological issues posed by Yiddish morphosyntax are addressed from the perspective of the intermediate status of Yiddish between the Germanic and Slavonic language families.

Abstract: This book observes and critiques controversies on the genesis and the character of Israeli Hebrew. Did it emerge through revival? Did Ben-Yehuda play a role in it? Is Hebrew a normal language now? The hegemonic ideology of the revival of Hebrew is shown to have been harmonious with various Zionist streams, as well as with its rival, Canaanism. The effects of revivalism are evaluated, and an argument is made in favor of non-revivalist alternatives in linguistics and in language education.

Abstract: The »Dictionary of Yiddish Loan-Words in German Dialects« documents contact between the German and Yiddish languages, with special reference to German dialects. The material was taken from German dialect dictionaries, compiled systematically and revised lexicographically and etymologically. The introductory chapters of the dictionary deal with aspects of historical and linguistic integration, the state of research on the subject, the sources drawn upon, and Hebrew and Aramaic etymologies.

Abstract: This volume contains 105 transcripts dealing with language and supplements Phonai volume 42 (= Part I) which contains 165 excerpts from interviews with German-speaking Jewish emigrants to Palestine/Israel largely on biographical subjects. The CD enclosed contains 41 of these excerpts and conveys an acoustic impression of the high proficiency and fluency of the speakers, all between the age of 60 and 100. The subsequent linguistic analysis divides into 10 subsections examining the sociolinguistic backgrounds of the cultivated 'educated' German displayed by the speakers and its grammatical and stylistic characteristics. Together the two volumes document and describe a variety of German distinguished first of all by its striking orientation to written and literary standards and models, and secondly by occasional lexical enrichments from the Hebrew-speaking world surrounding the speakers. This historically unique variety of German is doomed to disappear with the last generation of emigrants.

Abstract: In order to establish a model for the investigation of 'incomplete L1 acquisition' - the phenomenon whereby a bilingual speaker incompletely acquires the socially non-dominant language - the author offers a description and analysis of the speech of ten elderly speakers of Yiddish who acquired Yiddish as an L1 simultaneously with English but have not used the language since childhood. Of central interest is the question of whether the divergent forms in the data are the result of L1 attrition - the loss of knowledge once possessed - or incomplete L1 acquisition - lack of initial acquisition of the forms reflecting in the data 'fossilized' divergent child language. Bringing together certain disparate theoretical ideas, the author accepts Chomskyan notions of innateness and the language faculty while also considering the role of input in social/sociolinguistic terms. Specifically, issues such as 'linguistic identity' and patterns of use are shown to affect the quality of acquisition in bilingual situations. Through comparison with the speech of 'native' Yiddish adults, and mono- and bilingual German and Dutch children, a linguistic rule (present perfect) is isolated and shown to be due to incomplete L1 acquisition and not L1 attrition. In short, the study offers an account of what occurs when the child's innate inclination to organize linguistic input into a mature linguistic system collides with insurmountable social and sociolinguistic hindrances to 'normal' acquisition.
Abstract: This monograph establishes a theoretical model for the investigation of 'incomplete L1 acquisition' in the immigrant situation. The study focuses on the linguistic behaviour of elderly speakers who acquired Yiddish simultaneously with English and have not used the language since childhood. The central question is whether ungrammatical forms in the data can be traced to the attrition of forms once acquired or to the incomplete acquisition of those forms. With regard to Yiddish present perfect rules, results favor the latter explanation, indicating long-fossilized, divergent child language
